What, the #6 class in the country isn't "elite" now?

No, it really isn't. Especially not in the SEC.

Last year the gap between 1 and 6 was the same as between 6 and 17 (which happened to be Auburn). Last year it was the same as 6 and 21 (which also happened to be Auburn). To illustrate the gap we would be absolutely creaming our pants for the #6 class right now while Bryan Harsin was the worst recruiter imaginable and still pulled the #21 class his one full season.

Also, 6 in the country is basically 4th in the SEC and often 3rd in the SEC west.

In 2020 A&M finished like 4th in the country and went 9-1 in the SEC, in 2021 their starting QB got injured in like the second game of the season and they went 8-4 which isn't far off what'd you expect from a team finishing 3rd/4th in their conference in recruiting.

Last year was the first year, recently, they really underachieved and there is no way around that for sure.

However, the hurr durr A&M shows recruiting is overrated is a lazy argument and shows a lack of surface level knowledge/understanding of a nuanced situation.
