What was Harsin thinking? Seriously. Did he think he could just outsource recruiting in the SEC against Saban and Kirby? Did he have such a low opinion of SEC football that he assumed he would "coach up" 3 stars to win games against G-League NFL teams? Was he going to completely rely on the portal with a few high school recruits (that we wouldn't retain) sprinkled in?

What Harsin failed to calculate was that southern fans are very tuned into recruiting and in general to "talent aquisition/retention". He blew the recruiting game off, but when he wasn't producing wins he left us with no hope for the future. We knew there wasn't any talent waiting in the wings. We might have been patient if we thought he was restocking the cupboards.

I think that's what also contributed to Gus's termination. No big class on the horizon.

I think Haskins was initially shocked and bewildered at the scope of recruiting.

Honestly, he has a point. The 24/7 nature of recruiting by Saban and Smart is just madness.

Why do you have to spend your whole life making courtesy calls at every single high school? The prospects are already being identified. The reason is because everyone else is doing it. I don't think Haskins mind would allow him to adjust to the necessary reality.

I think he tried to go half way or adjust in his own mind by hiring the GM that was from the Cowboys. But that was never going to be anywhere close to enough.
