The last 20 or 30 years are the only time the south dominated.

Early on it was the northeast.
Then the midwest.
Now the south.

Success pretty much mirrored population migration.

The Northeast "dominated" because the game originated there and no one else was playing.
The South currently dominates because that section of the country has better football players.
The Midwest never dominated. Not for 30 years and not ever.
