The Athletic: Michigan’s blueprint to containing Georgia’s offense

For Michigan’s offense, the task will be survival.
But for Michigan’s defense, the task in the College Football Playoff semifinal vs. Georgia … well, that’ll feel more familiar. Michigan can beat “good.” It has to survive “elite.” Let’s discuss.
The main event offensively for Georgia lives in the middle — specifically, the offensive line (and in this case, the tight ends). What really separated Georgia’s front during some of the more challenging SEC regular-season games was its ability to separate and punish as the clock wore on.
Georgia started chunking Auburn on the ground with its run game, which eventually opened up the play-action stuff over the top. This is, ultimately, Georgia’s recipe. Create chaos defensively, don’t make mistakes on offense, churn drives and wear people out by the end of the third quarter. In every game, save one, that worked.
Georgia’s patience with the run game happens because the line is usually good enough to pay it off in the end — especially inside. Georgia’s front looks similar to what you usually see from an Alabama offensive line: gigantic guards with great feet, a center who doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and tackles who can beat people up. It’s a tough, road-grading group that’s helped by some of the most physical tight ends you’ll see anywhere.
Darnell Washington is a 6-foot-7, 265-pound sophomore who has literally everything a football player needs to be good. It’s fair to wonder whether Georgia will cut him loose a bit.
Brock Bowers is one of the best two-way tight ends in the country. He’s a problem.
Michigan’s linebackers play hard and have cleaned up a ton of the little things that hurt them earlier in the year, but they haven’t seen anything like the tight end group Georgia’s about to throw at them. They’re a bear in the run game. They’re even worse to deal with in play action.
James Cook, a running back, is why it’s a bad idea to play man coverage across the board against Georgia — especially when the Bulldogs go wide. Adoni Mitchell is a 6-foot-4 freshman receiver who can flat-out move.
You see all this talent and ask yourself: Shouldn’t Georgia have one of the best pass offenses in the country and not the sixth-most productive unit in the SEC? Well … maybe. It doesn’t, though, and the quarterback situation is one reason why.
Michigan’s best path defensively is to borrow Alabama’s: Find ways to cloud the picture for the quarterback through coverage and blitz disguise/variance. The good news for the Wolverines here is that Mike Macdonald has already spent most of this year doing exactly that. Saban’s defenses also mix it up better than anybody in the country — not just because he and his staff are great at creating QB nightmares, but because their rosters are always the best-taught.
This, for Michigan, has to be the blueprint. Win situations. Find ways to clog windows in obvious throwing downs, especially in the red zone, and make whichever quarterback Georgia starts have to think about a lot more than he wants to. And when either Bennett or JT Daniels (both do this) offer up opportunities, Michigan has to pounce.
Which quarterback should Michigan prefer? It’s hard to say, though neither likely terrifies Macdonald to a point where he feels the need to completely alter his game plan in case one plays more than the other. The offense feels like it moves smoother with Bennett under center just because he’s more nimble with his feet. He’s not a great runner by any stretch, but he can move the pocket and at least throw on the run. His deep shots can be hit or miss. There are examples on film this season of Georgia receivers blowing defensive backs off the ball only to have to wait several seconds for a throw to catch up with them.
Daniels probably throws a better deep ball, but he hasn’t been consistent in limited action (he’s also been hurt plenty). Daniels is the slower player physically and, at times, I think he might be slower with his reads. Georgia’s pass game could be better in terms of shot efficiency with Daniels on the field, but he struggles with full-field reads. Bennett’s hardly an expert in that area, but he has more experience and at least some trust from the coaching staff.
Still, if Michigan continues to find ways to mix coverages and show no tendencies with pressure packages (and gets more destruction from the likes of Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo), then the Wolverines will have opportunities to make plays defensively and support the offense against that monster of a Georgia defense.
The only unsettled spot on the field for Kirby Smart and Georgia is at quarterback. That’s a problem. It’s a remarkable problem to have to overcome for the College Football Playoff.
If you’re Michigan (and Macdonald), you make sure it’s the biggest problem on Dec. 31 — and one the QB and Georgia will have to think about for a long time.

Damn, it's looking like 59-3 Georgia! Great o-line, great TE's, great WR's, great RB's, 2 great QB's, and our offense is simply about "SURVIVAL!!!" Damn, I'll be happy with one first down, it's gonna be all GA all game!
I, at least, wanna be a decent tune-up game for their NC against Bama. Kirby is a super coach with a super staff, so I imagine since Michigan is so inferior, GA is already working on the Bama game plan. For the first time, I feel Michigan has no chance in the Orange Bowl...good luck to Kirby and Ga in the real game against Bama in Indy.

This article concerns Michigan's defense versus Georgia's offense, so the focus is on those positions (and the match-ups that result).
Hyperbole aside, at this point in the season, any team that makes the CFP should be considered elite, and Georgia certainly falls in that category, don't you agree?
Where specifically do you find fault with the author's assertions?

JMO Bowers will have a banner day VS Go Blue Jimmy.

The potential is certainly there, and I see no reason at this point why they wouldn't just continue to feed Bowers and Washington both.
Also not mentioned here is the impact a healthier Pickens could have, IMO.

If Washington played anywhere near the level of his athletic ability then he would be All World. He looks to take more plays off than play.

That Bowers kid cannot be stopped. In the second half of the SECCG Bennett more or less stopped going through his progressions and just threw it to Bowers every pass play, and even though we knew it was coming and started doubling him, we still couldn't stop him. Our only success was when Bennett made a couple of bad throws and we picked them off.

If they make Stetson throw 30+ passes Michigan wins

It just sounded skewed towards GA, did it not? No mention of Hutch & Jenkins or our DL, no mention of Ojabo & Ross or any of our LB's, no mention of our corners Gray & Gemon Green, no mention of Brad "Ball" Hawkins or Hill on the back-end...just seemed like a bit of a fluff piece to appease GA's ego...
The authors "blueprint" was based on common sense, nothing more. I guess these are the type of articles the Pugs' fan's want to read...

Georgia's defense is built to stop Michigan's offense. Many UM fans talk about how Michigan's run game is so great, but UM has not faced a great run defense. If Michigan can not pass, then Michigan has no chance to win.
Hard to win a game when you can not score.

So much is made of teams with two potential QBs, I often wonder why we don't see more packages with both (Bennett and JT Daniels) on the field at the same time.
It would obviously reduce the effective offense by one player, but motioning a different QB under center could create an interesting match-up scenario here and there.
I'm not a fan of platooning QBs per se, but I still think they can somehow manage to use the strengths of both in an unexpected way. (For that same reason, I'm not sure why we don't have a similar package for Jalen Milroe.)

Michigan blows out Georgia.. you heard it here first.

I know nothing but if JT was all that he would have taken the spot.
Nick decided early he was going to redshirt Milroe.

While Michigan is a good Big 10 team, they are an average SEC team. While Georgia has some offensive problems (mainly QB position) Michigan will not be able to take advantage of it. UGA's run game will be hard for UM to stop.
UGA's defense is elite. UM needs a balanced attack to beat them, and UM does not have one. If UM can not pass, they can not win.

IDK how many games he's played in, but I agree with that earlier idea (from Peter Burns, I think) that we should throw out redshirt rules in bowl games.
The CFP might be a little different, but at this point of the season, these kids should be able to play in a glorified exhibition game (regular bowls) without penalty.

You aren’t even close to the first one

If UGA shortens their receiver rotation to Burton, Pickens, and McConkey they are a tough group to cover when you factor in Bowers & Washington. The only problem really is that Stetson doesn't make corners pay for man coverage against Burton & Pickens often enough. Sometimes you just have to throw it up to your guy and trust they will win.

Bama is very susceptible to good TE’s due to scheme.
You look at Pitts last year in the SECCG, Wydermeyer and then Bowers, it’s not a new issue.
Bowers is incredible, but it’s also just not something the Saban/Golding defense usually handles well.

Make the walk on QB beat you with his arm. Gameplan done.
