I still prefer East/West divisions.

Call me old school but I do as well. Go to 9 conference games, keep West East, reshuffle them once Texas/OU join:

West
UTexas
OU
LSU
A&M
Ark
OM
MSU
Mizzou

East
Bama
AU
UGA
UF
UTenn
UK
USC
Vandy

Regionally aligns perfect, the balance of power is about as good as you can get. Play 7 teams from your division rotate 2 from other division. Barely any rivalries get killed with this. You can even do 1 permanent opponent from other division to preserve almost all rivalries and rotate the other, but I think more people would rather see variety of teams at that point. No weird methods of figuring out who goes to SECCG with pod system either.

I sometimes wonder if the SEC is afraid of that because both sides are large enough that in the future they could break away and start their own conference.

The only team that loses rivalries in this setup is LSU. LSU loses all 3 annual games that I look forward to the most and replaces them with Texas, Oklahoma, and Mizzou, which isn’t the worst possible tradeoff, I guess.

So, 7 division games and 2 rotating cross division games has every team playing every other team home and @home every 8 years, which isn’t ideal, but isn’t terrible either. If I was a fan of virtually any team, this would be my ideal schedule solution.

The east has SEC flavor but the west looks more like the Big 12 or southwest conference

That's fine for Arkansas but crap for LSU and the Mississippi schools. I don't think it's what A&M wants either
