I see it both ways. Yes it is selfish to leave your team and teammates like that.
But these guys are 1 play away from their careers being over. Or if not over, 1 play away from dropping down or out of the draft and losing millions. So o get why they want to opt out of the bowl game.
The NCAA did this to themselves though. With the playoffs, these other bowl games are little more than glorified scrimmage games, so it’s hard to argue that a sure first or second round pick should risk his career in a meaningless game.
You don’t see guys opting out of playoff games.

I also don’t understand why coaches even care (outside of their own bonus). If anything, it allows them to let a younger player, who likely is on the starting depth chart for the next season, get a few weeks of practice as a one and reps in an actual game.
Realistically, whether you win the Outback Bowl or not has no impact on the future health of the program.
