Why I'm not sweating what we saw (yet)

Several thoughts in no particular order and a couple of questions for those watching on TV.

First, the defense. Holy shite, they showed up to play. Yes, an inferior opponent. However, they did exactly what they should. Plus let's not forget how GSU played UF, OM and UGA (right?) over the last few years.

If a couple of catches that hit receivers in the numbers were made, no one would be saying anything about play calling.

Is no one else excited that we were able to run the offense without mass substitutions and everyone looking at the sideline?

Based on that and Gus' answer when someone posed the question about not giving too much away to Clemson, I'm going to assume the reason we got the play calling we did is solely to catch Clemson off guard. After all, Gus said the awful QB rotation in last year's game was to try and catch them off guard.

I've got to think Stidham holding the ball too long is just dust that needs to be knocked off.

OL does concern me a little, but for whatever reason it always take a few games for them to gel.

Question: were receivers running lazy routes or was Stidham holding too long or a combination?

If the WR's make 3 catches I suspect JS would have passed over 300 and had 3 passing TD's and 1 running.

JS was holding the ball. It's another sign IMO that this is Chip's O. Rhett often predetermined the pass pre-snap which is part of Gus' HUNH concepts. JS holding the ball shows he was expected to work through his progressions.

Exactly. I can really only think of two bad throws he made. One he badly overthrew a bubble and the Int..

The DB was holding Slayton's arm on the one at the goal line. Slayton would have needed to make a one handed catch....but the throw was right on the money.

Stidham showed some rust. He also showed that he is extremely accurate with the ball.

The OL play is the only thing that concerns me about last nights game.

Also, is it just me or did Cox not play a lot last night?

I also think it was vanilla O play calling on purpose because we didn't see much TE play or much of Sal.

Defensive play was very, very good but maybe not surprising when considering we have an excellent DC in his second year with some elite returnees.

On the offensive side, new OC, new QB, and two new starters on the OL. Lots of opportunity for improvement, and they may just need to gel (they either will or they won't).

In elite level programs, most teams will start the year as "good" and get better as they mesh and figure out who they are or regress if they peak too early physically or start having locker room issues. We could be either one; time will tell.

^^Canella was hit in both hands. Slayton could have made a great catch for a TD and should have held on for the first down. That was called appropriately. I laughed at the boos.
