So, right now, Cohen is the front-runner/expected to be our AD.
Then reports come out of coaches not liking the suggested hire, and then other reports conflicting with said disagreement
Once we officially announcing the hiring of our new AD, that's a different story, but at this point, I'll take anything that's reported with a grain of salt

The hire was leaked yesterday by Thamel and ESPN.
It hasn't been officially announced by us because Roberts got hit with a storm of blowback, and now he has to decide what course of action to take. He didn't consult anyone that mattered and made this decision extremely quickly over ~2-3 days. He blundered.
After running an extremely slow and "process driven" search everyone thought they were on the same page. Everyone was good with one of Hartwell, McGlynn, or Nunez getting the job. Then Roberts gets a call and throws a curveball by going all-in on Cohen, who it turns out is trying to possibly get out of MSU for being in the same spot that Allan Greene was in.
It seems like Roberts just got caught up in thinking he was making a bigger splash hire with a current sitting SEC AD and he probably assumed that everyone would like that, when really he should have consulted some people.

Is there any chance we end up with somebody other than Cohen?
Posted on 10/30/22 at 7:09 pm to HonorThyWarEagle
I mean, absolutely. It sounds like most of the people that matter aren't happy with it being Cohen so it would have to be a pretty big decision by Roberts to stick with that given the blowback.
He's obviously in a very awkward scenario.

Auburn is basically a microcosm of global politics right now, in that nothing can begin to get better until the boomers who refuse to give up power all fricking die

Board call happened tonight. There is a plan. Prediction reading tea leaves, Cohen.

I find it interesting that we’re about to fire a Mountain West head Coach, but people seem to be rallying around two Mountain West ADs - Nunez and Hartwell. Cohen is a long time SEC coach and AD, both at Kentucky and Mississippi State. He is from the state and went to school at Birmingham-Southern. He is miles ahead of the other candidates when it comes to experience and pedigree.
Edit: Regardless of who the AD is going to be, the perceived indecisiveness and constant division is frustrating.

Here is what is being said about him:
- He's not the right guy for NIL moving forward
- The money people at MSU don't like him and are done with him
- OTV (our NIL collective) want nothing to do with him
- The money people at Auburn apparently don't want him
Those right there would be major red-flags regardless of where he's at in relation of the two Mountain West AD's. Don't forget, Allan Greene was technically the AD at a major SEC school and he can't even find a job. He couldn't even land Georgia Tech which he interviewed for. So the fact that Cohen is at MSU doesn't really mean he's above anyone in competency.
It also seems very concerning that MSU fans seem to be celebrating the fact that they think they're getting rid of him. The people at MSU who are defending him seem to be the mods/staff on their paysites, but those guys could easily be buddy-buddy with him considering that he was the baseball coach there before they made him the AD.

Links to support any of this?
The man got MSU their first national championship didn't he? He also just got a raise and extension this summer.

At the end of the day, this is Chris Roberts’ decision to make. The people with money and power put him there. If he can’t be trusted to hire his own Athletic Director, then what that says to me is that those with power and money don’t want the person with the best resume, they want someone that can be easily manipulated. That’s not what’s best for Auburn. Cohen is far and away a better choice than anyone else being considered. Hartwell’s athletic department is under legal fire right now, Nunez is at New Mexico, and Rich McGlynne is apparently paralyzed into inaction currently regarding the football program.

Dont forget Jay Jacobs brought Auburn a national championship and Bruce Pearl! He was the best!

No there's no link. That is what is being said.
The contract and extension mean nothing - he's been getting extensions the whole time he's been there because they can't issue contracts longer than 4 years because of state law, so they renew them basically by default. His buyout is basically nothing.
With regards to their actual sports: baseball is doing good, but they're always good in baseball. He has apparently bungled both mens and womens basketball. He hired Moorhead who was a mistake, and Leach looks like a solid hire.
But again, if their money people don't like him and AU's money people are already ringing the phones AND he's not seen as being a visionary in terms of NIL? That's hard to overcome man. With no money and no NIL you don't have shite. Point blank.

For those down voting me. JGT: 5 minutes ago
I believe John Cohen will be named AD in relatively short order. Probably Monday. Confidence here is 80-85%.

Yup, a lot of talk now that it's going to be Cohen after all.

If it is, I hope the entire operation is pulling in the same direction and get behind him. If not, pump the brakes and get on the same page.
