Edit: And obviously its somehow Jay Jacob's fault too.

We are in the basketball thread, Jacobs is a saint when posting in this thread (only this thread).

- Jacobs got Bruce
- Jacobs gave Bruce everything he wanted/needed
- Jacobs never handcuffed Bruce
- Jacobs fought for Bruce during the scandal

Jacobs was also very supportive of and flexible with Barbee too and he built an arena for Lebo that he didn't even get to use.

Pearl was an obvious hire, it didn't take a genius to figure that out.

At the time, there were people that were hesitant considering his show cause, NCAA history + being out of the game. Hiring Pearl reportedly ruffled a lot of feathers at the NCAA

Of course it was the right move, but nobody would have blamed Jacobs for going the safe route. Especially since Pearl still had a show cause on him

.....So you are saying he was a good AD when it comes to BBall?

If anything I'd say he just didn't frick it up. Probably didn't care much about basketball so he didn't get overly involved and make illogical emotional decisions like he did with football.

As I said, as it relates to the basketball thread, Jacobs was a good AD

Meh. He made a huge mistake hiring Barbee. Yes it was a good hire on paper, but Jacobs failed to look beyond what was on paper and see the warning signs that people were shouting at him.

I can remember reading on message boards directly after the Barbee hire how UTEP people were happy to get rid of him because he was such an a-hole. They talked about how standoffish he was, and told how after a player was signed and on campus Barbee would only communicate with players outside of practice indirectly through his assistants. Kept his office door closed and locked at all times. Closed off and distant from not just his players but assistants too.

And no surprise he behaved the same way at Auburn and nobody liked him.

Jacobs didn't even learn his lesson either because he did the same thing with Sonny Galloway and the baseball team. He saw a good record on paper, ignored the red flags, and we ended go with lawsuits and a PR nightmare because of it.

Only in hindsight. At the time, Barbee was considered a great hire by AU bball standards

Resume

- "Elite Recruiter"
- CONFUSA Coach of the Year
- Regular Season CONFUSA Champs

Yea, on paper it looked like that

That's literally exactly my point if you bothered to read past the first sentence.

If he was a "good basketball AD" he would have looked at more than just what was on paper before making the hire. He could have listened to all the UTEP people telling him what a shitty person Barbee was. Or if he had any people skills at all he might have noticed something was up in the interview process.

But Jacobs didn't put any effort into that hire because he wasn't really a good basketball AD.

Jacobs didn't care about actually making a good basketball hire, he just wanted the appearance of a good hire on paper.
If you remember, the fanbase was watching that hire very closely because we were still upset about the embarrassing 5-19 Chizik hire. There was a lot of pressure on Jacobs to make "splash" hire and the Calipari connection was all people needed to see.

Just because it looked like a good hire to us fans doesn't mean it wasn't really a shite hire bc JJ should have known things we didn't.

If Barbee won at AU, no one would have cared that he is a douche canoe

After Barkley's national comments re Chiz hire, it may have been out of JJs hands tbh

There is no way they could justify passing on a CUSA COY, top recruiter who turned UTEP into a NCAAT team

In summation, JJ will not be bad mouthed in this thread.

Obvious or not

-JJ built us the best arena for crowd environment (on accident)
-JJ gave us tBruce
-JJ supported tBruce

That gives him a pass in this thread

Agreed. He was never considered a great x's and o's guy and basketball people were telling him he would struggle recruiting without his Nike connections.

That's all water under the bridge now. Both are gone and we're ranked in the preseason for the 1st time in 18 years.

Adidas execs were convicted in the FBI bball scandal

Hopefully Chuck just pleads out so we don't run the risk of addt'l details coming out in court

Amen. Clearly he has interests of his own but could be his parting gift.

The lack of basketball coverage is driving me nuts. All I have is a rivals subscription but usually there is a little something here and there from Jay Tate or BM. There is nothing over on that site lately for our preseason top 11 hoops team. I would read literally anything regardless of quality or content. Give me some hoops!

Switch to Scout. Murphy and Caldwell have had a different article daily since practice started.
