Which would be better for the purposes of trolling/pissing off the rant: The switch flipping for JJ, and him having the year we thought he would last year (30 passing TD's 10 rushing TD's); or another Juco QB coming to Auburn and leading us to historic offensive numbers? Both obviously leading us to the ship.

Honestly both would be pretty Auburn things to do.

I would rather have the former.

It would at least put the notion to rest that Gus Malzahn can't develop a high-school quarterback...

JJ balling out and winning the SEC would be icing on the cake. Hell, were gonna have the defense to do it. Just have to have production from the QB position.

Hopefully our WR tackle as well as last year's WR's did.

Muschamp (plus Garner) was very rough with Cowart last season for two reasons. First of all, they thought he was too soft against the run and didn't HOLD THE DAMN EDGE well enough. Secondly, they thought he needed to be taken down a notch.

In short, there was no happy way out for Cowart last season. The season was there to break him down. And it did. I'm told he's all over that now and playing at a much higher level.

From JGT on Byron Cowart

He forgot to mention his lost weight being the primary driver of his improved practice performance

I must caution thusly: I don't think JF3 is a good passer. I realize that JJ was atrocious last season, even though I don't believe he's actually an atrocious passer. Sean White is the most accurate out of all of them. I don't think JF3 has been particularly accurate or powerful with the throws this spring, but observers say he's been making good decisions with the ball, though. That would be a saving grace.

Jay Tate said he thinks JF3 will be QB1 due to his potential in zone read but qualified it with this

Nick was a bad passer too. He definitely had power, but if the zone read game is good enough, passing becomes much easier

In terms of recognition, I only have an issue with INT 1 listed of the Louisville gifs. It was very well disguised coverage presnap but his first read on that throw should have tippedhim off

INT 2 is Gus' age old no pass read playaction "Background hail mary" that we throw blindly. Cam/Nick/JJ/SeanWhite all throw that ball without making a read

INT 3 is a toss up, it was a solid read in that the guy was open but he can't throw while rolling. The issue with JJ is he refuses to run which would have been the right call. A cut up field gives him a blocker and 10+ yards of open field

Last year we were looking back on the off season and trying to read between the lines to determine if there were any clues that our offense was bad. One of the red flags were reports from practice & scrimmages that the defense was playing great and that the offense was having trouble scoring.

We overlooked it for two reasons:
1. We were pumped about 'champ and we found evidence of an immediate defensive turnaround
2. We had no reason at that point to doubt Gus's offense

I'm trying to do more reading between the line this season since we're predictably getting mostly coach-speak.

So far it looks like we have more of the same. SW being our most accurate passer is only bad news, IMO. I think he's got potential to be very accurate but what we saw last year was 58%.

He had close to a 20 % drop rate.

And what would lead you to believe that after 5 years of drops we figured it out now?

At least JF3 can run the zone read. JJ could be a running threat but he refuses to do it

All of our QBs had drops and our receivers aren't going to be any better this year.

I don't know if I agree with this. For the last few years, our primary WR targets were raw athletes that lacked true WR skills and prone to drops (Sammie, Rico Louis) and then the headcase of Duke. I think the young crop of guys we have now are more polished now and are legit WRs. Inexperience will be an issue, no doubt, but I think they will settle in as the season goes on just like Carlton Davis did at DB last year.

Which is why Auburn needs to go with the dual threat quarterback.

I would rather have a really good rushing attack and bad passing attack, than a mediocre rushing attack and below average passing attack.

Jeremy Johnson is a head case that struggles in big games. He could run, but chooses not to. He struggles with the zone read and isn't as elusive and originally thought. Sean White is small, and while he could be a real gamer, he doesn't fit the zone read offense and we couldn't protect him last year. He had passed after passes dropped last year. JFIII is a virtual unknown, but he can fly and has a big arm. He adds that "something" to the offense that others don't.

Good thing we have our cupcakes early... Oh wait all our tossup games are early and our WRs will suck

We've been saying something like this yearly.

Marcello just talked about this on Nashville Sports Radio. Pretty sure he reads our board

FWIW: Marcello says its JJ or JF3.

Our WR's will improve. They can't go anywhere but up after all. I believe Slayton, Davis, Truitt, and Stevens can form an average WR core at a minimum. Throw in a few catches for NCM and Kyle, and we may have a better than average group...you never know.
