Now for water cooler reality time.
A kick is original force. The original force that is touched without possession is referred to as a muff. If the "touch" does not alter the original flight of the ball, producing a new force, a ball that goes into a end zone by the original force is a touchback.
The correct call was made on the field. Touchback. Touched or not.
Missed that on a test once and had to dig out the file to review my notes.
That rule is the same in National Federation, NCAA and the NFL.

25 years of officiating High School, NCAA and NFL rules to get there. It makes perfect sense to a herd of zebras.
The result was that the call was right and in typical fashion...the announcers have the football rules IQ of the AFLAK duck.
