1) “Bad play calls” are only bad play calls if they don’t work
2) Derek Mason will end up being an excellent DC @ Auburn just as he has everywhere he has been. Dude beat Georgia with a bunch of doctors for crying out load. He will end up making great adjustments once the defense gets his schemes down pat and also brings in players to fit his scheme. I definitely trust his expertise.
3) Bobo shows flashes of good calls and then tends to get in his own way at times which is quite frustrating and I am hoping Harsin helps him clean this up. I will never understand how you can abandon what is working with the game on the line with 4th & 2. PSU couldn’t stop the run all night just as our defense couldn’t stop the pass. Which, by the way, doesn’t mean that the PSU DC sucks like some are claiming Mason does.
4) First year transitions with a complete overhaul of the coaching staff is difficult and we will only get better from here. With this in mind, we are further along in our rebuild than I had hoped.
5) We didn’t lose because of the trick play fumble coming out of halftime either. Nix threw a pick six that was dropped so I call it a wash on that front.
6) We will get redemption next year as PSU will come to JHS@PDF.
7) We only dropped one spot in both polls. Calling it now: We won’t drop more than 2-3 games in conference which will be a success in a full transitional rebuild.
Future is bright fellas.

The fumble happened. The mythical non intercepted pass didn’t.
Not close to a wash.
The fumble ended in a touchdown.
The non intercepted pass? No score at all.
Keep the no wash reality.

I agree on all of this. At a high level, this was a close game against a solid top 10 team on the road that we could have won. It is frustrating because we had chances to win, but at the end of the day, they had home field advantage, we are still learning new systems, and 1 or 2 plays made the difference. That does not make me want to write off this team or coaching staff by any means, but there are a few takeaways for me from this game.
1) Bo still has a long way to go. During the game, I was pretty pleased with the way Bo played, mainly because it was a huge step forward for him compared to some of his other performances on the road. He made some plays for us, didn't turn he ball over (somewhat luckily), and didn't get much help from his receivers. But he isn't a QB that win you that big game yet. I'm still hopeful that he will improve with more coaching and time in the system, but in a game between two similar QB's Sean Clifford clearly won that matchup.
2) Harsin said in the post game conference the fade at the end of the game was not the play call. There were 4 receivers running routes and I think Tank was an option as well who looked wide open in the end zone at the end of that play. For some reason, Bo decided to immediately go to the fade which is frustrating, but I do not believe that was the call. I put that on Bo, not the coaching staff.
3) Our receivers did not make any big plays to help Bo out. I can think of at least 3 big catches that Dotson and Washington made to help their QB out and at least 3 blown opportunities from our receives. In a close game, with a QB that still is struggling to get going on the road, that makes a huge difference. And for all the crap Hudson is getting for the fumble, he was by far our best receiver in that game. Malcom Johnson Jr. also probably made the best catch of the game at the very end to give us a shot from the 30 on the last play. I think it's probably time to try out some other receivers. There is still a lot of talent in that room. I think Bo is an above average QB with room to get better, but he is nota QB that is going to instantly make all of his receivers better. He needs some help from them and wasn't getting it on Saturday.
4) The secondary issues do appear to be mostly related to zone concepts. A lot of teams run these defenses successfully, and I think the LSU comparison is a good one. I'm not giving up on the defense/secondary after this game, but it was clearly an issue on Saturday. Run defense is incredible. There was some obvious holding on dline that didn't get called. We had to run a huge a 3rd and goal play without our two top linebackers, and I still think we got the safety.
5) I have thought all along this schedule set up nicely for us. Even following the loss to Penn Sate we get a week to clean things up, and then head to LSU for an immediate chance at redemption. Win that game and we are right back in it with all of our goals ahead of us still. Lets see how the team responds.

I agree that sometimes coaches outthink themselves on palycalling, and the 4th and 2 corner fade route pass totally baffles me. Have no clue what coaches saw to call that play but...
We were NOT running it down their throats. Tank had to work hard for any yardage, and it took him 26 runs to just get over 100 yards.
We tried running it on that 4 down series at the 10 yard line. It got 1 yard. No way would I have run between the tackles again on 4th.
I would have rather had a run/pass option to the wide side using tank as one of those options to let him have a shot of beating a DB out there, or Bo faking it and running it himself.
But many of your other points are solid....

Tank was definitely a work horse and Hunter had a very high YPC average.
I’m just of the belief that deep in the 4th quarter you have a better chance of scoring by wearing them down with the run over and over and over again. It demoralizes a defense and chews up the clock.
But you are exactly right, a run / pass option with Bo made perfect sense on that 4th & 2.

I think the secondary is fine. The best NFL secondary can't defend for 8 seconds or more whether they're in man or zone.
The lack of pass rush is the more concerning factor for me. Sending only 3 and getting absolutely no pressure on the QB is a tough ask for any defense in the world.
