Bama had some bad games too. Overall, they were good. He was instrumental in bringing the talent in

FSU finished 11th in the ACC last in yards per game and yards per play (5.51 YPP). Fwiw, auburn is giving up 5.54 YPP this year.

It wasn't just a couple games... they were pretty bad

There are always issues if you look hard enough. Why not list the good parts? Their fans were pretty happy with the defense this year

quote:

The Florida State defense figured to be a strong point this season, despite losing four players from last year's squad to the NFL Draft. And, frankly, the Seminoles have exceeded even those lofty expectations, finishing the year as the No. 5 scoring defense in the country. A particular strong point of the FSU defense has been its proficiency against running quarterbacks, whom the 'Noles have faced on more occasions than not in the 2015 season.

LINK

quote:

The reason for the Seminoles' success against running quarterbacks this season can largely be attributed to the assignment-sound defense the 'Noles have played, a mantra established before this season ever began. I asked numerous FSU defenders, along with defensive coordinator Charles Kelly and first-year defensive-ends coach Brad Lawing, about how the 2015 Florida State defense could be better than last season's squad that finished 50th, nationally, and the same response came back time and again-- and it always involved doing one's job. Taking care of home. Trusting one's teammates to make the play, without the need to get out of position or try to appear on the weekend highlight reel by taking someone's head off.

Simply put, the 2015 FSU defense has aimed to succeed as a unit, not as individuals. And that strategy has paid massive dividends with regard to containing, capturing -- and, nevertheless, punishing -- opposing QBs.

Sounds good to me. But bitch if you will. Someone's gonna and it might as well be you

15th in total defense
5th in scoring defense
15th in passing efficiency defense
31st in sacks
36th in rushing defense
40th in red zone defense (tied with Auburn)

These are all good marks. Great? Some of them, but they're a solid all around defense from almost any measure you look at.

Because everyone already knows the good parts. He's just raising a concern which is fair.

I had the same thought he did. Doesn't mean I think he won't be a good hire.

I think I made it pretty clear in my original post I'd love to have kelly... just pointing out his struggles Year One calling plays.

I actually wanted Kelly back during the 2012 DC search... he was thought to be a big reason stoops was successful in Tallahassee. Then Pruitt came along and blew the doors off in 2013.

I think FSU lost some critical DLman after 2013. I am thinking that was one of the reasons Pruitt GTFO. 2014 was expected to be a down year on D for them regardless.

I mean, if you have to ignore the current season's statistics to go back far enough to find issues then that is a good sign.

I don't think Kelly is an all-world DC but he's someone who has put up a solid defense this year and demonstrated development from the previous season. It's also nice that it looks like he has plenty of work to do in order to become a HC candidate.

Would be awesome if he'd bring brad lawing along with him (if Thompson decides to follow WM)

I agree. Resist the urge to team up on people. Lowspark is good people and I'm not putting him down. Just discussing the concern

I don't think Thompson will go but Lawing would be great in any capacity, absolutely

we have two defensive staff openings.... but the numbers may not work out.

We will still need a DB coach

Kelly could be DB coach and we could go with 2 LBs coach. Inside coach and outside coach

It could fit. Kelly coached FSU's DB's.

Not becessarily. CK's specialy is DBs & he is likely to coach 1 of CBs ur Safeties if not both. The remaining ciach is more likely to be an ILB coach IMO if we were to get CK. But CK could give LT all the LBs if he keeps him & add a specialized CB or safety coach...Still a lot of moving parts to figure what the remaining coach would be.
