*sigh*

This isn’t a critical comment towards you, jang.

Just a sigh to recognize I am of an age where my college heroes have become “Oh? That guy?”

Not your fault… time rolls on.

Sad to hear. His senior year was my Freshman year. Post college a lot of these guys would come back in the winter quarter and take classes. I had a math class with him when he did one of these winter quarters. Dude was smaller than I was but ripped. IT was pretty funny after class, he would meet up with a pro lineman whose name I forget that would fill up the door. He was a pretty cool dude but had a note taker for him every class.

I was born in 89. Didn’t start watching football until Daniel Cobb was our QB.

I am detached to the Barfield/ Dye/ Tatertot days although I love hearing stories about our tallest stars of those days. A guy at work went to Auburn while Lionel was there and was telling me some story about Auburn students drinking milk jugs of beer to get around open container laws. He told me Lionel was 5’6 and shoulders bigger than his own (this guy was like 6’2 200) and downed like two
jugs of milk in front of him. I don’t know what size jugs but while
everyone was drinking beer Lionel was drinking milk. Lionel told him he needed the calories.

Lionel would also dunk on us in pick-up games in the Student Act.

Anyone know what he died from?

All I saw was a lengthy illness?
He was a force. Think him & Bo overlapped a year. I came in shortly after Bo left.

I also heard a story about how a football player took him out on his dunk attemp and he chased down that guy around 5 or 6 courts divided by curtains and threw the ball at him for taking a cheap shot while he didn’t have insurance.

Dye tried to run James off when he came in late 1980. There's an Instagram post that Lionel James made that spells this out. Dye asked him who recruited him, and Lionel said Alex Gibbs. IDK if Dye had a problem with Alex Gibbs but Lionel James was demoted to 7th team in the wishbone. James wanted to transfer, but through counsel with his family he stuck around. Dye later said it was his worst mistake and Little Train was one of his favorite players.

IIRC, Trotman did color analyst work alongside Jim Fyffe for many years on radio. Surprised to see how young Jang was. LOL. I graduated AHS in '88. The 80's were a good time to grow up and Auburn was a great place to do so. Fortunate. War Eagle.

Did anybody recognize the milk jugs used for beer story? I found that odd. Maybe my old friend was just telling the story little too funny.
