That’s his main mistake right there. No one thought we didn’t pay him enough.

He's mad because Sexton didn't kiss him.

Who in the hell felt this way about Gus? Even at the height of my support for Gus, I never thought he was not paid enough or that he walked on water.

No, there were the market rates morons and the recruiting stability fuzzys that pushed Leath too.

I made a thread in January 2018 because I wanted to discuss how the contract didn’t give stability it just locked Auburn down and it got blasted.

Leath is without a doubt one of the worse hires in the history of Auburn University. Leath is a pompous arse and his wife was worse. Too many stories to tell them all here, He cost Auburn Millions in overruns of the presidential mansion (Lots of changes, he fired the architect who had been at Auburn for years), He was hated by the faculty and staff, threw himself a coronation fit for a king, stopped the annual Holiday Parties at the presidents home. He lied about wrecking the plane at Iowa. Good by and good riddance.

He will never get another job at a major university.

Leath said he got there by adopting the attitude of, "Just, c'mon, let's be reasonable here," and having some individual meetings with Malzahn. "It would have been far better if no agents were involved and you could just sit down and say, 'What's best for the university? What's best for you? What's best for the program long-term?'"

Leath lives in academia, he tried to operate in the real world and got smoked.

Leath joins the trifecta of Golloway and Barbee in the worst hires ever.

Educators and boosters shouldn’t be allowed to sign off on these complicated huge contracts. Use a sports firm to challenge the Sexton’s of the world.

found it

Yeesh. Some embarrassing takes in that thread (including some from yours truly).

I do feel somewhat vindicated in that Arky, Ole Miss, MSU, Mizzou, SC and Vandy all fired their HCs between the time this article came out and AU fired Gustav.

So his seat certainly wasn’t the “hottest in the SEC” after all

Sexton gets the blame (that is part of his job), but he is only doing what his clients want him to do with regards to negotiations.

Gus talked with JJ face to face for his early contract IIRC.

Barbee

Barbee by far. Golloway wasn't liked by anyone but got us to the NCAA tourney. In hindsight, maybe the swimming coach we fired last year was on par with Barbee and Leath?

I’m not blaming sexton. He did his job well. I’m saying a Phd professor/academia/educator has no business signing off on a $50 million football contract. Leaths job was academics for students, education and studies, not football coach negotiations and contracts, yet Auburn is allowing this.

Well Leath phased out the lawyer who was Auburns primary negotiator on huge contracts such as UA deals etc

There should be a 3rd party firm that helps represent universities here against The Sextons of the world, would that not make sense? How many big time contracts have most AD’s negotiated and Leath wasn’t an AD? Fly in someone to help with this BS every 2-3 years for your big players like the big 3 coaches.
