No regerts. Harsin had a good resume.
Agree. The way Harsin was hired and by whom I think is the killer for him. A Leath-hired, under qualified AD given the rope by President Gouge - who I don't think even likes sports - to go out and hire "his" guy. Harsin is not blameless because he didn't understand the soap opera he was walking into. Or maybe he thought he could overcome it all. I still hope he runs the table but that's not likely.

Steele was never considered to be a long-term solution. The idea was for him to act as a bridge while the President and AD situations were settled and normalized. At that point Gogue was on borrowed time and they didn't have a replacement.

He would have obviously been a much better choice than Harsin ultimately turned out to be because he would have hired a real SEC staff and he would have had the booster support to actually recruit. His defense was already playing well so that wouldn't have changed at all.

From what I remember, his proposed staff had Kendall Briles at OC and Charles Kelly at DC.

Not suggesting that Steele would contend for a title, but he would have probably been good for ~8-9 wins for a few seasons with good recruiting classes until they set up a more permanent option after bringing in Roberts as President.

This logic always kills me. That was ~20 years ago, dude. He hadn't even been a Coordinator yet at that point and Baylor was a really bad job.

Since then, he had been a DC at pretty much all the top schools in the SEC. He has a very extensive network of coaching contacts. Again, he would have been a CEO type with a formidable SEC staff of recruiters. Probably nothing exciting overall, but good enough for ~8 wins at Auburn.

How bad is Harsin? This topic actually has merit, that is how bad he is..

The only problem with that is if he was to start winning a decent amount of games (9-3 or 8-4) how would you ever get rid of him?

From what I remember, Bobo was rumored as his OC. Which happened with Harsin anyway. I definitely don’t think he would’ve hired Mason as DC though.

Steele would of been a little better in the short-term. Not a long-term solution tho

I just know I wanted change and felt we needed to make a big hire. Harsin was by no means that big hire but he talked a good game about process and culture building, and know those were key elements to Saban’s success.

Harsin proved to be out of his league here, but I still am glad we didn’t go with Steele.

Maybe marginally better in the short term, nowhere near threatening to compete for championships.

With the same amount of negativity but locked in for at least two more seasons

Running off coordinators/players, lack of recruiting success, and coaching failures are the killer for Harsin. He's the worst HC in Auburn history at this point.

Walking into a "soap opera" didn't:
(1) Drive off both his offensive and defensive coordinators, to be replaced by his buddies
(2) Fail to fill key positions of need over 2 recruiting cycles
(3) Cause ~20 transfers including the starting QB
(4) Fail to make halftime/in-game adjustments

Pretty sure that that was a smokescreen rumor put out to make the idea of Steele look even more unappealing. His guy was Briles, who is hit or miss himself, but Briles + Bo Nix and Kevin Steele's defense is an easy ~8 win team with a chance at 9.

Kevin Steele would’ve made for a higher floor but no higher of a ceiling. He would’ve been a bridge. Recruiting wouldn’t have tanked near as bad and there would be less chaos, but recruiting and coaching wouldn’t exploded either.
