I thought the ax would fall after a loss to ole sis with the bye week and not let his firing be the new AD's problem. Looks like firing the current coach is the new AD's first task after all.

Which is one of the most unattractive things we could offer. Fire the football coach for them.

“Hello Mr. New Atheltic Director, I’m an Auburn BOT member who has helped Auburn make series of dumb hires, but the first order of business is we need you to fire the football coach for us, thanks, welcome to Auburn.”

True but I’m guessing Hartwell knows what he has to do before accepts our position.

Any chance we are still vetting Hartwell? I have seen some sexual assault claims a his school recently.

I think it's gonna be Rich at this point. If it was Hartwell there would have already been some movement I think. He's been in the discussion a long time.

They also believe they will wait to fire Harsin until after the end of the season.

An recent article on The Athletic raised another red flag on Harwell - in a piece titled "Ranking CFB's 12 strangest coaching hires of the past dozen years", USU's Gary Andersen came in at #9, including the following paragraph:
quote:

When Matt Wells left for Texas Tech, a small group of Utah State donors reportedly strong-armed AD John Hartwell into bringing back Andersen. His second tenure lasted just 16 games.
If he can be "strong-armed" by the likes of USU boosters, how's he gonna hold up to our gang?

Re: the strong-armed Utah St boosters

Years back Gary Andersen befriended the biggest richest booster of Utah St. Hartwell knew he couldn't get around the bringing back of Andersen and said to the group ok you can do this but if it doesn't go well then I get all the say so on the next hire. After Andersen went 1-5 in 2020 he quit and I think gave the buyout back. So Hartwell hired Blake Anderson from Arky St and they went 11-3 in 2021 but not so hot 3-4 start to this season.

So all that to say if Hartwell is hired maybe what he learned over there (way smaller scale) will help him at Auburn.
