His high school film was the stupidest highlights I’ve ever seen. Almost no OL play and Boobee running for his life, creating 70 yard runs that only gained 10 yards and tons of deep balls

He really hit the roster at the right point. There’s few other times in Auburn history where he would have stood a chance in the RB room.

I remember those videos too. lol.

And in his first year playing at AU, he did some of the same things in the spring game, and some in the fall. His natural instinct was to keep running where he could find space...even if it meant running all the way, the other way. :)

But he got better, when Boobie realized every college had players as fast or faster than him.

Only thing I noticed after 3 years is he still was never to me, a natural runner. He still seemed to not have that RB instinct the really good ones have.

He was good enough for us, and some of it was his OL too...

Yep. We missed on a lot of RB's the last couple years.

Some of those RB classes were lean overall

In 2017, Devan Barrett was #11
2018 — Joiner #5, Asa Martin #9

DJ is better than all 3 of those guys and he was #21 last year MAR would have been #8 if he were in the RB classification

Yea, it honestly seems like RB rankings are becoming just as much of a crapshoot as OL rankings. Obviously there are some of your can't miss guys, but overall it is iffy at best.

That 2017 class was pretty loaded, and Barrett was 11.

DJ at 21 is kind of absurd.

I do think how Gus has used young RB's in the past has been to their detriment, like Barrett. He finds one play they can do, and that is what they do. Instead of letting them come in for the actual position and getting to learn that full position, they basically play a singular role for a year or two. Hopefully that changes.

I can see why DJ was at 21. In his films, he's not a flashy, homerun type of back. He just scoots and finds yardage. I wonder what his 40 time was?

And I agree about how Gus uses his RBs. Barrett was fine running as a true RB in HS, but all of a sudden he can only be given plays to the outside or screens at AU, while Gus lets KMart carries between the tackles and he is just as small.
Devan was 6'0" 190, and KMart was 5'10" 170-180.

But then Gus is the guy late in the season that didn't use Boobie very little in the first half, but rode him in the 4th qtr if we needed for sure a run game then.

I don’t think he was inappropriately ranked in 2019. Just goes to show the variation in RB depth among those classes as a whole

It is possible that there was a reason for that. ONe that you, me or any of our famous insiders know about

Just a thought

Let's just say this, if Whitlow doesn't get his shite together he won't even see the field.

It only took two seasons to be right.
