How does the Auburn Sports Board see Brandon King fitting in on defense?

6'2, 210 pound JuCo safety from Highland Community College, originally from Alabaster, AL. Runs a 4.3 - 4.4 40 yard dash LINK

Before the emergence of Justin Garrett and Robenson Therezie at the STAR position, I thought Brandon King would be able to come in the during the summer and eventually have a role there. Now, with the problematic depth at safety (specifically boundary safety), does Brandon King land a starting spot there? Josh Holsey grabbed a starting job there as a quick fix and jumped straight over Trent Fisher, TJ Davis, and DeMetruce McNeal for Spring, but I feel like he's better suited elsewhere.

It's just hard to look over Brandon King after watching his HUDL highlights, seeing his size, and watching his speed. We haven't had a sizable safety that runs and hits like him in a while.

Forgot to mention...

Guy played defensive end, linebacker, and safety while at Highland Community College, so Ellis Johnson could fit him in a number of different ways. As mentioned before, he has freakish speed for a big player, and also has around a 40 inch vertical jump.

I think the coaches really like Holsey at safety. Garrett seems to be pretty much locked in at Star. I think he's gonna have to jump Whitehead if he wants to start. But Johnson has been pretty high on Whitehead too. Either way at least we might have at least one backup safety that's worth a damn.

I need to know the roles and expectations of a field safety and boundary safety before I can attempt to answer this.

He could end up playing field safety with his speed but I think the coaches would rather have him in the box. Personally I think he ends up starting at the boundary. It is kind of crazy seeing the depth we already have at the Star considering before the spring I was worried King would be the only guy we had ready to play that position

Holsey only moved to safety after McNeal missed a couple of practices. He didn't "jump" over him. McNeal was out. And they said that if you missed practices, you weren't going to be on the 2-deep. Hence, why McNeal isn't even on the depth chart that released last week. I expect Holsey to move back to corner and McNeal to start at S.

.

So you are saying we are still going to have the most missed tackles in the secondary in the sec?

To answer the OP: I expect King to come in and compete. Do y'all remember competition for playing time. Like what good team do. Before we had anointed starters. Mr. Coach Malzahn is bringing competition back to the Plains.

Yes, that's exactly it.

The leading tackler in the secondary also missed the most tackles in the secondary. Did anyone else actually try to tackle the other teams then? Or was it just McNeal back there actually trying to do something?

Lol my thoughts exactly. But for the OP, I think King comes in and adds much needed depth but does not start this year.

I believe King has 3 years to play 2, so there is a possibility he could redshirt this year, but I can see him competing for a starting safety spot, and if not starting, could be in the rotation.

I'm sure Johnson will want him to know the Star position as well, in case we have any injuries there. It's a pretty physical position, so there's always that chance that you lose 1 or 2 guys as the season goes on.
