Ark was going to back up the Brinks truck and we were on the tail end of the craziest coaching carousel in years. At that point, we either took a risk on an unknown head coach, or kept the one we had and tried to build stability. If we didn't offer something close to what Ark was willing to pay, I think he leaves and we start all over again and lose that stability. If you're going to be mad at anyone, be mad at Ark for drastically raising his asking price.
I'm not at all confident that Arky offered him what they were rumored to have offered.

He was a very divisive choice for HC there, and a significant percentage of the power structure were opposed to hiring him at any price. It very well may be that Sexton floated the $7 million for 10 years rumor as a negotiating ploy for both sides.

Of course a competent, qualified AD would have been able to determine what was a legitimate price and negotiate from there.

Perhaps one day we'll know what that is like.

I blame Mullen getting $6.1 mil from UF. I don't think Gus ever really considered leaving, seemed like classic Sexton.

There seems to be no doubt they offered. You could argue they knew they wouldn't get him, but they offered.

I agree. Gus IMO isn't good at that part of the game. His evasive answers were awkward and contrived. It was obvious he had been coached, but Gus doesn't like that game. I suspect the long term contract has the potential to free him from those concerns if he uses it correctly.

We could have let Gus go,ruin recruiting and start over. We would have gotten a good HC, Chad Morris would have been a good hire.

Stability has proven successful with many coaches and programs. Hopefully we have the aggressive Gus back.

I hope so too.

I hope to add a new coach head to each spike after every game next season.

If a program truly thinks its time to move on from a coach, you can't let a single year's recruiting class stop you from making that move. That would be license to never fire a good recruiter who is a bad coach.

That being said, I also am generally in favor of stability at this time and support the extension. But that support of the extension also includes the fact that I still don't trust Gus as far as I can pick him up and throw him. He became "aggressive" Gus when his seat was burning with the heat of 1000 suns. Is he going to continue that aggressiveness? Or get all nice and comfy again now that the seat is nice and cool? We shall see.

Also, for the money Gus is being paid, I sure would like to see his offense be competent starting in Game 1 rather than working through trust issues in Games 1-4 and finally getting around to kicking it in in Game 5.

I honestly think Gus struggles to be balanced. When he is off one way he is awful(lsu, we have a lead we are good), when he is the other way it's pure sassy pants and it's awesome.

Hope he just stays in sassy pants land.
