Can we please fire Gus at this point? He’s lost the team. I can’t wait until we beat Ole Miss by 3.

I did not want Gus when we hired him, I did not want to give him an extension, but I have never seen his team quit on him. I do not think he has lost the team when one player decides to transfer.

Seems like they can play while in the portal then. If so, I don’t know why he can’t just play while in the portal. Unless the coaching staff simply wants their players “all in” and has team rules regarding playing while in the portal. Dabo wouldn’t let Bryant just sit on the bench, but not play. He was in or out for example.

Depends on the team and I’m guessing perhaps even a case by case basis. They retain student athlete privileges in terms of their access to resources but the AD or coaches decide their team specific involvement.

Cam’Ron Kelly, for example. Slightly different since he was brand new to the team in January and we weren’t playing games but I believe he stayed with the team, practiced, etc until he finalized his transfer to UNC. He also was doing it for family reasons.

In terms of Joey, I think the advantage of him leaving now is that he can remove himself from team activities and focus on himself for a while.

There’s a basic mental health aspect to all of this that we haven’t considered but Joey is closing the book on his dream in the middle of a season and semester away from his family and he’s tasked with uprooting his life to somewhere new again. I understand he chose this and some people here just aren’t going to feel sorry for him but that’s a lot for a 19 year old to deal with at once.

Some points to remember(based on history and facts)..

1. Gus has never lost a team(as a poster already stated too). He may lose a player(s)...but surprisingly he knows how to keep the team together.
2. Gatewood, someone who I think spoke for him, said, he left early b/c he wanted to get his name out there for the next 2 months, in order to decide and enroll where he wanted to be by January(when semesters usually begin). Now whether he could have entered the portal and still been on the team is probable, but Jones hit it on the head, Gatewood is simply totally depressed how he has not gotten more playing time, and the 1 play he got in LSU game was his 'hitting bottom' mentally spot. He feels he needs time away, and understandable since he has been 'all AU' since 2015.

3. it's not the first or last time a player will leave in the middle of the season these days. an OLe MIss QB, I believe just entered the portal on Tuesday, and quit.

4. Lastly, Gus doesn't know how to handle QBs, whether it be in development or playing time. He says one thing in the press, and then doesn't do it in games. We all have seen it. These are some of his weaknesses...and until he figures it out while here, or the PTB finally feel we will never reach consistently championship level play and make the change, this is our football team.

I think it’s undeniable. Even if Bo eventually becomes the QB we all hope he’s capable of being, Gustav’s repeated issues with handling the most important spot on the offensive roster just aren’t getting any better.

From Joey Gatewood’s personal QB coach:

quote:

Denny Thompson has his own radio show in Jacksonville. He talks a lot about Joey Gatewood's departure on his show (Wednesday). A few notes and quotes:

"Everybody says he had a bad camp. That's not the information I got from Joey or some other people there."

"Joey was under the understanding he was going to play a significant role and was told that, look, you're going to play a big enough role you're probably not going to want to transfer when the season is over."

"When we went to Dallas for the Oregon game, we were under the impression Joey was going to get 15-20 snaps. We were under the impression [the competition with Bo Nix] was that close, and it didn't happen." Gatewood got one snap: a touchdown dive in the end zone."... I realized very quickly if Bo was having a bad game, Joey was not getting in the game."

He says Gatewood first reached out to him Monday about potentially transferring. He met with Malzahn Tuesday before practice, as we reported, and was supposed to meet with Malzahn Tuesday night, Thompson says, but that meeting was delayed until Wednesday morning.

Thompson says Malzahn has been extremely helpful in helping Gatewood since the decision was made and has reached out to people close to Gatewood to let them know they'll help any way possible during his decision-making process.

Must say I’m rarely surprised by the reaction of our callers. However, today, the visceral display of emotion from Auburn fans toward Gus Malzahn in the wake of Joey Gatewood’s departure has been startling. Thoughts?

Pawl isn’t lying. From start to finish, average Joe fans chewed Malzahn like dubble bubble over Gatewood.

Glad to hear this. The only “bad” we heard came from Gus’s mouth, saying the offense didn’t score during closed door fall scrimmage with Joey at QB.

Joey hasn’t shown anything on the field that proved him to be worse than Nix.

I really have no idea how Joey plays. I don't know if he is good or not. Gus may be justified in limiting his play, but Gus has a lot to answer for how it got to the point he had to play a TF, and he had to keep that TF in when he clearly shouldn't have been.

It’s a small sample size from Joey, but it’s all we have, and it’s been productive, going all the way back to the bowl game.

Gus has a lot to answer for. If something isn’t working, try something else. Gus keeps doing the same thing and getting the same results. I really hope he doesn’t destroy Nix’s confidence this early.

He did lose the 2014 team. It’s clear as day after the TAMU game.

And players said it was the upperclassmen vs the underclassmen on the defensive side

I think this is more indicative of the distaste of malzahns stale offense and people having a reason to get mad

Maybe so.

New follows from Gatewood:

-LSU Director of player personnel

-Three different recruiting personnel and official account of Florida.

- FSU WR coach David Kelly.

Probably stemming from the suspension of Jerome Whitehead following his altercation with his position coach Cheese Harbison (whom he allegedly punched).

It did appear that the defense fell completely apart midway through the season.

At any rate, multiple stories saying that Gustav has been very supportive of Joey in the wake of his decision is indicative of what a decent human being he is.

Unfortunately how he has handled the QB position since NM graduated is also indicative of his major shortcomings as an offensive coach.

Justin Ferguson
@JFergusonAU
It’s another Auburn Mailbag:
- QB development under Malzahn
- Future plans at QB
- Locker room leadership
- Bo Nix’s rushing
- Penalties
- Offensive confidence
- Derrick Brown: The GOAT?
- Basketball predictions
- A hypothetical hoops lineup I want to see

There are rumors floating that Shivers and Schwartz are not happy and mulling things over.

I don't know why we keep trying to use him like a 220 lb RB. He runs really hard. Would love to see him get more outside stuff.

Outside? You mean speed sweeps?

Shivers is quick, but doesn't do well other than in a straight line. Defenses pretty much take away the speed sweep, unless it is used when least expected or you're pounding away inside successfully. We haven't.

SHivers is a good RB, but he is not the RB we need to supplant an all round back like DJ WIlliams.

Now I will say..in defense of Shivers, that Gus as he does with the QBs, does not do a satisfactory job or substituting. For ex. He used SHivers for I think 4-5 plays in the 1st qtr for about a 5.5 avg. Pretty good. But then Gus never, never put SHivers in again. Can anyone tell me why?

I think there is simply no confidence w/ either backup RBs and now backup QBs. All b/c Gus doesn't know how to use them to keep the offense fresh, or to provide a spark or change of pace.

Good points, and I am not advocating for Shivers to be the guy, DJ should be the guy.
