TRE MASON AMONG SIX TIGERS ON ALL-SEC PRESEASON TEAMS
AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn's 1,000-yard rusher and the player who'll anchor the offensive line are among the Tigers honored by SEC coaches on their preseason all-conference team announced Thursday.
Tailback Tre Mason and center Reese Dismukes landed spots on the All-SEC second team offense. Auburn place-kicker Cody Parkey and punter Steven Clark also are second-team selections.
Defensive end Dee Ford and tight end C.J. Uzomah landed spots on the third team.
Mason rushed for 1,002 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Dismukes, who was a freshman All-American two years ago, has been praised for his leadership by Gus Malzahn's coaching staff.
Clark averaged 39.8 yards per punt during a busy 2012 season. Only five of 70 punts were returned. Clark was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, which goes to the nation's top punter, in 2011; and a semifinalist for the award last season.
Parkey hit 11 of 14 field goal tries, including nine straight. Thirty-three of his 48 kickoffs last year were touchbacks.
Uzomah's role will likely increase this season. He had seven catches for 136 yards and a touchdown last season. Ford won't start the season on the field. He's been slowed by a knee injury. But the Tigers are counting on the pass rusher to bounce back. He had 34 tackles, including six sacks, last season.

AUBURN DEFENSIVE TACKLES SEE BETTER DAYS AHEAD
AUBURN, Ala. – For Auburn’s defensive tackles, the chance for redemption is at hand.
As Auburn’s season came unraveled en route to a 3-9 record in 2012, considerable blame fell on the interior of the defensive line. Defensive tackles combined for just 74 tackles and 2½ sacks in 12 games. Opponents ran at will. Their quarterbacks were seldom hit. And it showed on the scoreboard.
“It’s a pride thing,” junior Angelo Blackson said. “It was a very bad season last year for us. This year is a chance for us to redeem ourselves. It is a chance for us as a team to prove we’re not that team from last year.”
Junior Gabe Wright enthusiastically agrees. He says it’s time to wash away the foul taste of what happened last season.
“ It’s a new day,” Wright said. “We believe, as a defensive front, we have to set the tone. The play starts with us and it should stop with us.”
The Tigers finished preseason camp Tuesday and had an off day Wednesday for the first day of classes. They’ll return to the practice field this afternoon to continue preparations for the Aug. 31 season-opener against Washington State at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Camp was fiercely physical in Gus Malzahn’s first preseason as head coach. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner drove his players hard. Wright says it was needed.
“It’s so much better,” Wright said. “Just talking about mental toughness, physical toughness, getting back to what Auburn was. When you want that in practice, guys are going to get banged up. There are going to be times games are going to be tight. That’s when going back to what we did in fall camp is going to help us win.”
Blackson, too, welcomed the physical nature of practice.
“We are emphasizing playing in the backfield, creating a new line of scrimmage,” Blackson said. “I think that’s the biggest difference. They stress making practice harder than the games. As a defense, I think we are going to take that in stride and get back to playing Auburn defense.”
Blackson, Wright, senior Jeff Whitaker and junior college transfer Ben Bradley figure to be in the playing rotation at defensive tackle. Freshman Montravius Adams could be next in line.
“We have been rolling guys in,” Wright said. “Coach G says he wants to use 10 guys – five tackles and five ends.”
Wright says he saw significant growth among the defensive tackles during camp. He says he expect it to show against the Cougars.
“As a whole, since Day 1, we have definitely excelled,” Wright said. “I’m not saying we are to our standards or Coach G’s standards, but I can say there has definitely been improvement. Now that fall camp is over, I think guys know what they need to do.”

I liked the comments from our DT's a lot more in this article than the one the other day. Hope they are better than things we have been reading in this thread. Thanks Joey.

I think Blackson could have a real good year. He played a little as a true freshman and had that blocked punt against UVA and two blocked FGs last year. Last year he struggled with everyone else but he has the size to be that big penetrating DT.

Agreed. Regardless of some of the negative reports coming in here I think there will be considerable improvement from last year. I think just the demanding type of coaching from Garner and the better attitudes. Imo

I'm not gonna hold my breath and wait for a good defense. We haven't seen a good Auburn defense since Tubbs left.

I like our DT rotation. It's finally deep enough to be effective up front. That's going to help out our ends

God, as long as they can just hold the line of scrimmage, that will be an improvement over the last two years of just getting completely blown off the line. Then maybe next year, they'll start to get some penetration.
Baby steps.
Baby steps.

Do we know what the practice schedule is now until the Wash State game?

Blackson and Adams? Otherwise it's Wright and Whitacker. Oh, and Bradley. Not questioning you Jonesy, I know you are well versed in AU football. Are you just saying that you like our DT's better than the last two years? I agree we should be mediocre and that will be an improvment. Just curious what you were saying is all.

Has anyone heard anything on Niles? I know Nero got hurt and is "day to day", but I haven't heard a word on Niles yet.
Right now at the DT spot it's
Blackson
Wright
Whitaker
Bradley
Adams
Niles
Nero
And maybe Carter could move back inside if we needed help, but I'm sure he's a good bit under 300 lbs now. so that might be tough. I feel like Adams is not going to redshirt going to get a good bit of PT, looking at that list.

Yeah, just saying that our rotation is deep enough to hold the line on most downs for the first time since 2010. That's not necessarily a glowing review but it's a measurable improvement.

Pretty sure I'm going. I haven't been to a season opener since Utah State.
