Jonathan Wallace will be the No. 2 quarterback.

** "Jeremy Johnson is a close 3, no, we'll call it a 2a."

Gus Malzahn says Nick Marshall was a lot more vocal tonight. "It was good to see," Malzahn said.

Malzahn said it began to "click" for Marshall around the second week. That's when he knew Marshall would be the starter.

Freshman QB Jeremy Johnson will travel with the team and earn quality reps during practice.

Edit one of those tweets. Malzahn said a redshirt "isn't" out of the question for JJ if everyone stays healthy but JJ will travel with the team and continue to take reps in practice and has a chance to cut the lead between he and Wallace.

Malzahn says he felt like Marshall "had something to prove" when Auburn recruited him, and he's worked like somebody who felt that way.

Translation. If Nick gets hurt, the Rs is pulled and JJ starts.

Summary of Gus notes from Bryan Matthews
quote:

***Malzahn said they had a 14-period practice Sunday night. Mainly working on Washington State.

***Malzahn said it was a close battle for the quarterback position. The bottom line...

"When Nick knew what to do, he outperformed the others," Malzahn said.

***Malzahn said Jonathan Wallace had a good camp and is the No. 2 quarterback. He called Jeremy Johnson No. 2A. He said it wouldn't be a bad thing if Johnson redshirted. Johnson will not work with scout team. He will work with the top groups and dress out and go on the road.

***Malzahn said it was a different feel at practice today with Marshall as the starter. He said he did a good job as a leader.

***Malzahn said they will play to their QB's strengths. He said Marshall was one of the best athletes he's coached at QB and has a very good arm.

***Malzahn said Marshall should get more and more comfortable each week as they progress through the season. They will build the Washington State gameplan around what he can do best right now.

***Malzahn said Wallace fought hard and improved from the spring. He called him one of the mist high character players on the team and it was hard to tell him he wasn't going to be the starter.
