Mason better be lights out on defense, because Bobo’s offense won’t be scoring much.

You’re never happy you have no idea how he will do

I thought Steele and all Saban disciples ran a 2 gap defense. I guess I’m way off here

Don’t believe Steele does, but pretty sure Saban’ scheme is. Pretty sure most 3-4 schemes are a 2 gap scheme for the line. Pruitt’s does as well.

And Pruitt's D has always given Gus major problems. I always dreaded facing him at FSU, UGA, UAT and UT. It seems this scheme is tailored to stop more modern offenses.

Most modern thoughts is the 4-2-5 is the way to go and most DCs know how to scheme odd and even fronts. The base is the only difference because everything depends on offensive scheme you’re being faced with. That’s why larger body TEs that can run gives all defenses nightmares. Because they can end of the line block in the run game and slot out in the pass game and wrinkle in both.
Even the standard 3-4 guys slide an OLB down on the LOS. We call ours a Buck. But we run a base 4-3 and hybrid 4-2-5 under Steele.
If Mason wants to stick with his odd front he will need a 0-tech/Nose Guard. So will be competing directly with UGA and bammer for the 6-3 and taller 330lb guys at nose

the 2 gap is a very specific way of containing the zone read. It is what Mason used at Stanford to stop Oregon. In turn however, it is also very effective against runs out of the shotgun because the base mechanics are pretty similar.
