Work In Progress

"We talk about taking steps in the right direction and we did that as far as turnovers go," defensive back Blake Countess said. "We allowed a few too many big plays and they put some points on the board. That's not our goal, but we took a step in the right direction and we got the win so that's really all that matters."

Auburn is ranked ninth in the SEC and 93rd in the country in total defense allowing 412.0 yards per game. It's not close to where they would like to be or need to be but head coach Gus Malzahn has seen progress under first-year defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

Auburn could be close to getting one veteran defender back. Cornerback T.J. Davis, who injured his knee during spring drills, was dressed out and went through warm-ups before the SJSU game but didn't play. He could return for the Kentucky game Oct. 15. Several true freshman have also assumed big roles on defense including Irvin, cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Jeremiah Dinson, linebacker Jeffery Holland and defensive end Byron Cowart. Malzahn said it's important for the young players on both sides of the ball to take a step forward during the off-week. "It's just getting better at who we are going to be in the second half of the season," he said. "We've gotten some good information on the young guys. I think that is probably the biggest thing for me is how the young guys are going to respond, what their strengths are, and building around those strengths." -

I'm liking what Muschamp is doing, moving the pieces around and inspiring competitiveness. I think we are going to be very good in the next couple years.

Also, NB4 melters.

Praise Allah. With those 7 career tackles, TJ Davis will be the linchpin of the defense in the 2nd half of the season.

I find Brannigan's schtick a nice counter balance to sunshine pumping. I always laugh at the shite he posts. To me it's funny.

I think the defense is going to improve over the course of the season.

The long kid at CB, Carlton Davis, is always in decent position, but Wilson from MSU is a matchup nightmare in red zone and the SJSU TD was a great throw.

I think he will be pretty good soon.

I think moving McKinzy to buck will pay dividends. I thought we covered the boots pretty well last week.

Interior line is where I think we are not likely to see dramatic improvement.

LB is williams and holland. I've given up on frost and would just blitz him when he's out there.

I still don't understand why Holland doesn't get more playing time. He's a good pass rusher and hits like a truck.

Seriously, don't freak out yet, gents. The stats are not great, but I can say from experience that year 2 of the switch is where massive improvement can occur. You have a lot of guys (especially DL and LB) with responsibilities that have totally changed. Their cues have also changed and shifted.

I have the utmost faith in Muschamp. He is changing the culture on one side of the ball and all he needs is time. Gus needs to prove to me that he can develop a QB and have an identity on offense besides GOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO!

You're funny. There hasn't been sunshine pumping for a few weeks now. This thread wasn't sunshine pumping anyway.

Like I said, some people like to see things burn.

I was talking in general. Even during good times Brannigan does his thing. It pisses some people off I'm sure, but I enjoy it. I don't take the internets too seriously. Everyone has a role to play, including Brannigan.
