It's shocking every time we go. I don't recognize half the shite anymore. Honestly, I'm not sure I'd go to Auburn if I was going today. I loved the small town charm and feel. It doesn't have that now.

It's changed, but it still retains some of its unique feel. My FiL went there in the late 30s and early 40s. I grew up there. Many of the older adults I knew were young men when he was there and we talked about Auburn a lot. We knew the same town. It has changed more since I was growing up and going to school, but there are still many things that are the same. It would probably take someone longer to see that now, I think.

They aesthetics of the downtown mid rise apts suck…and won’t age well…but it’s good for the businesses downtown to have residents around. Downtown hotels were very needed.

The worst issues will be the POS apartments that were built in the late 90’s - early 2k that are off campus. They’ll attract shitty tenants. The ones that change names every year…college park, college park 2, Sterling, I’m sure garden district too…

Those apts were my stomping grounds back in 02. They were decently nice back then. I’m sure I wouldn’t recognize things (have not been back since 2014).

I think it’s important in order to stay competitive when recruiting overall talent. It’s not just all about athletic and academic facilities. Many students live downtown and they want to be able to walk around town and conveniently shop at places such as Publix and Target, etc. They also want easy access to major food chains - Whataburger, Taco Bell, Starbucks, Dunkin, etc. It’s located near campus and very convenient. We would start losing talented students to other places that keep growing and developing otherwise… (Gainesville, Athens, Tuscaloser, etc).

AU 2022:

“The demand for an Auburn degree has never been greater, with the university recently topping the 40,000 mark in freshmen applications for fall 2022—an all-time high. The record number of applications for next fall is a 68.5% increase from those received for fall 2021 and a 155% increase from fall 2020”

It’s probably quite appealing to students to live in Atlanta-style midrise apartment buildings, being able to conveniently walk to Publix and Target and maybe bump into Olympic gold medalists and SEC football&basketball players… and all of this in a clean and safe city!

Btw, I think the new public food market hall is something very special and unique...

Gainesville
Gainesville is a larger footprint of what Auburn is doing now IMO, down to the small Publix so close to campus. The Publix there is right across the street from Gerson and Hough Hall(s) and the complex of UF's business buildings.

Apologies for bumping a month old thread, but figured it fit here better than starting a new one...

Apparently Cheeburger Cheeburger is closing. I saw a couple of things about it on Twitter yesterday with a screenshot of what looked to be a Facebook post announcement, but now there isn't anything on their FB page since April.

Need to get back down sometime. Haven't been in AU since the Supper Club's last night.

I don’t like the “growth” of Auburn.

It used to be a small town southern school. Tiger Town pretty much started the corporate development of Opelika/Auburn area.

I remember Supper Club… I was there… often..

Fusion, Arigato, and University Donut Co. also closed this week. It’s getting scary out there.

Auburn is overbuilt for retail space and restaurants. New ones coming in taking business from others. Mcallister’s is closed to make room for more apartments (L shaped building that will go towards Amsterdam’s, take a right and go to college near presidents house).

New additions. Yard Milkshakes, Mo Beignets, Ross house coffee, your Pie, Food hall (fancy name for a food court) has 6 new restaurants. New restaurant/bar going into the old Mike and Ed’s. Bittye and Beaus coffee. South college Fuzzy Tacos (Average). New Guthries downtown (old Bernie’s Building) irritable Baou need bigger space, lines out the door.

New medical facility (ER) on Shug was needed.

Closed recently: add TAcoritas, same owner as cheese burger, cheese burger. Owner passed.

That's too bad. It is a chain, but a small one and I always enjoyed it.

I get back to auburn about once a year and even in that time there is usually noticeable change. I know it needs to grow to stay competitive, but to me it is sometimes sad.

Wow, I never knew it was a chain. My Mom and some of the other women in the Dept of Education would go have lunch there about once every quarter when I was in high school. I always knew when she went because she'd be at home that night saying "Cheeburger Cheeburger" like Dan Ackroyd.

Did not realize that was the same owner. Didn't they also own the Mellow Mushroom?

They did. I don't think they owned Cheeburger tbh. I never heard him talk about it in my many convos with him on pint night
