Yes he deserves to leave however he likes. Beginning of season, end of season, middle of season IDC. However, the last 11 years have increased expectations in this program and I'm unsure if an untested nepotism hire is the right option to keep the program momentum going.

What should we have done...........bring in a new HC which means an entirely new staff? How many transfers would we have had? Steven has been a big part of our program. He knows the names and faces. He has Bruce to lean on. There will be growing pains, but Steven was the best possible replacement.

I just hope investment continues in Auburn basketball. I feel like football is doomed to be forever middling due to too much booster involvement, but basketball has built something really nice under Pearl. I hope Steven succeeds, but if not, I hope we're willing to go out and pay for a top level staff in the future. In this day and age of college sports, I actually think there's more value in basketball than there is in football.

Well, Bruce decided himself that Auburn should hire his son by retiring right before the ball gets rolling. I don't disagree that the timing left AU with few options that wouldn't have nuked the roster but in a regular off-season would you honestly hire Steven over other potential candidates with head coaching experience?

And leaving while still having a role with the AD and leaving a good roster for the next guy.. could have been much worse

Do you care about long term or just a smooth transition?

Have to play the field first. If Pearl doesnt like that, well he is not God.

Why not give Steven a chance? Nobody has a clue if he will make a good HC or not. You have written him off before he has even coached a game. IF Steven doesn't work out, we will go get another HC. Bruce has shown the nation you can win at Auburn.

We’ll never know. Coaching searches are no guarantee either, though.

I would’ve loved to know what the options could’ve been in 2026, had Bruce coached out this season on a farewell tour. I like to think he built something worth protecting, even if in part, we protect it from the easiest choice.

Should roster retention matter in an era when all kids are basically in one year deals? I’m not so sure.

The fact that we don't know if he will be a good HC or not disqualifies him (in my eyes) from this job. The time to be taking flyers on HCs was 15 years ago, not a year after hitting the final four.

What does making a FF last year have to do with this year? We have one starter back and most of our bench gone. Again, what asst. coach do we go get?

Idk, I have no reason to think Steven won’t be as good as say.. coach Bucky at this point. Could we have found someone better than Bucky? To come take the AU job following our GOAT?

Is he really going to run for Senate?

My question is the timing of this retirement, literally right when the new season is about to kick off.

When it was initially announced I automatically assumed it was due to the Alabama Senate campaign. Coach Bruce Pearl shot that down during his Farewell video...

I could be completely wrong, but I still think that is why the retirement was tied to now. I still think he ends up running for that senate seat after all

Virginia just hired Ryan Odom. Duke hired Jon Scheyer. North Carolina hired Hubert Davis.

I wouldn’t have gotten my rocks off to any of those at the time those hires were made. I guess Steven is akin to the Scheyer hire

Holy shite. I said Pearl leaving today hindered us from doing a national search and he hurt the University. We are past hiring an accomplished coach because of Bruce's selfish actions.

There are other coaches that didnt get protection from pops and worked their way up to HC. Ive said for years why doesnt squirt go HC somewhere so he can prove himself.
