I knew it going in, but my mind still struggles to make sense of college gymnasts favorably competing with/besting the best all around gymnast in the world. I've had it explained to me, but it persists.

College Gymnastics does not require Olympic level skills, so basically Suni has to dumb-down her routines and do skills she hasn't done in ages (her routines are much shorter now and this means major adjustments - she will get used to it eventually and this should show next season). Many of the other NCAA gymnasts are top L10 (Level 10) gymnasts which means 95% of the L10 skills are equal to NCAA skills. This is why Sophia Groth has so much impact as a Freshman (former top 4-star L10 champion). Besides, the other top teams have a great mix of L10s and elite-level gymnasts (including World Champions and former Olympians). Florida has numerous NCAA superstars, 5-star gymnasts, Olympians, and World Champions fighting for line-up spots. Basically, LSU, Alabama, Utah, Florida, Oklahoma, UCLA, etc each have much more roster talent than Auburn. Suni would dominate 99% of them at the Olympics but NCAA rules restrict her "Jedi-type-skills" somewhat.

Yeah the way I understand it, they’re better off doing a simpler routine perfectly than a difficult one with any hiccup.

Yes, but even a difficult and clean routine can only get you a perfect score of 10.0 max in NCAAs (due to the capped scoring system - basically you start at 10 or 9.95, etc based on your difficulty, and then judges will deduct points). So all the additional skills are wasted energy and could lead to injuries. In Elite (Olympics, etc) with the open scoring system, you can even get scores of 14.0+, etc - there is no limit, adding difficulty to your routines is encouraged and required. Basically, the main difference between NCAA and Elite gymnastics is scoring.

The only reason why Suni is still performing difficult routines is because she is already experimenting for the 2024 Olympics.

This article explains it all:

You Get a 10! You Get a 10! You Get a 10!
College gymnastics is spectacular. The sport’s scoring system is abjectly bonkers.

5-3 Auburn. In a real sport and not 198.775. We have 5 runs, they have 3.

I'm down in Auburn about once a month so if you want to figure something out, I'll oblige. I will drop you like a two foot putt. Let's put on some boxing gloves in a gym.

Sure thing, babushka. I apologize for challenging two people to a boxing match. I'm having an average day.

I grew up and was born in Auburn, hayseed.

I apologize that my normal thoughts on sports and competition offend your sensibilities. How many male sports are judged by "judges"?
