From JGT

quote:

I watched (and shot) every snap from the quarterbacks during indi today.

Calzada was the best of the three, but none of them were very good. Drops were an issue, to be fair.

The alarming part was the red-zone drill. Ball snapped at the 15. Kiesau jammed receivers at 5 yards and then let them go, so the goal is to loft balls near the end line (over Kiesau) and let the receiver make a play. Finley and Ashford were throwing with too much heat. Half their throws didn’t even give the receivers a chance to compete for the ball. Calzada was at least solid in that manner — he was able to get some loft and arc throws over Kiesau.

Man, that was a real eye-opener. I realize Tank is the real red-zone weapon on this roster, but I wouldn’t trust any of these quarterbacks to make pressure throws in this scenario … at least based on today‘s showing. Maybe it was a bad day.

From Stultz
quote:

We just viewed 20 minutes (4 sessions) of practice. We didn't see any live team, so there wasn't much to analyze or observe. Here is what we saw:

OFFENSE

- Jeremiah Wright was back on the OL after spending the first nine practices of fall camp playing DL.

Quarterbacks

- T.J. Finley
- Robby Ashford
- Holden Geriner/Zach Calzada

- The quarterbacks all struggled a little bit. A lot of overthrows. Kiesau was acting as a safety and they were air mailing some.
- More drops than usual this fall from wide receivers.
- Tight ends were working with offensive line on blocking/coming off the ball.
- Receivers working on jumping and landing without fumbling/not getting self hurt.
- A lot of QB/WR drills.
- Shed Jackson made a good catch where he tipped the ball to himself.

Centers

- We only saw Tate Johnson and Avery Jernigan at center during these drills at center. Some players were missing along the O-line.

DEFENSE

Secondary

- Working on footwork.
- EDGEs working on getting down the line.
- Derick Hall was very vocal once again, wanting people to get better. Really got on Dylan Brooks.
- Linebackers were working on tackling. C-Rob would be dragging a dummy and run and the linebackers had to catch up.
- Keionte Scott played some at the nickel, working with Marquis Gilbert and Jaylin Simpson.
- Jayson Jones absolutely smoked an offensive lineman (Jeremiah Wright) on a drill.
- Safeties and corners split up, but both were working on man coverage drills.

The song when we got to enter the playing field? Joe Esposito's "You're The Best", also known as the song that plays when Daniel LaRusso started kicking butt, ultimately defeating Johnny Lawrence ILLEGALLY in the championship match.

I’m nowhere near 99.9% confidence interval that can make a claim a law but I’m certain we have had drops issues with trash QB’s. Before you get your panties wet, yes l know Bo dealt with drops, he had his fair share of drops, but he also at least temporarily topped out in his career at this recent 61% completion percentage.

When it comes to drops on the field if it touches your two hands you should catch it. However if the QB cannot deliver a timely accurate ball the WRs cannot perform as well either. It’s the shite that rolls down hill kind of thing.

Our receivers will be good/average. Our TE's and King will be elite in the pass game. We'll run a lot of 12 personell. QB won't be an issue.

Schematically I think 12 is a good fit I just don’t think 12 personnel works against Georgia or Bama and other teams. It’s asking our players to dominate players more talented/ bigger and stronger than them and it drastically makes their game prep against us lot less complicated.

What scheme would you run? We are going to be Iowa State with our offensive scheme hermano. I like it.

Well the spread is famous for neutralizing better talent.

I think Stultz is spot on because LaRussa was a whiny bitch.

I think you play to your strengths. We have great TE's and RB's, good slot guys and questionable outside guys. I think Kesau will acknowledge and embrace it.

Just like on D we'll play alot of Okie if we stay healthy. Because that's who we have. If Cam Riley and the LB's show out that opens more possibilities.

Yep. The only thing I really liked about Gus’s system was that it wasn’t what Bama and Georgia were running. So, not only did they have to scheme against you, you also weren’t necessarily recruiting the same kids.

Remember we don’t like the spread it’s a Mickey Mouse high school offense even tho most of the NFL run a variety of spread concepts

We have one solid receiving TE in Shenker. Deal is a solid blocker. Fromm hasn’t done anything of note other then the 100 yard scramble catch from Bo against LSU last year.

We have good running backs. I used to be on the Tank can be the best back in the country train but now I just consider him an upper SEC back. Great at breaking tackles has poor vision. Plus our OL is better at pass pro then run blocking. That was the issue with our team last year on 3rd and 2 we couldn’t line up and run for the yards to gain. I hope that improves but if not we are gonna look a lot like last year. Shenker is a very good 6 yard sit down receiver. What’s his name Bowers or whatever his name is at UGA. That’s a great TE in todays game. Can block decent one the edge. Can split out and you have to use a nickel or safety to cover and he still wins most of those battles.

Plus we don’t play in a soft as cotton conference. Almost every DLine is stacked up front.

Yep. It’s not coincendental that Saban’s losses mainly occurred via spread teams that probably had running QBs. Georgia last year was probably among the first if not the first at beating Bama at its own game.

Gus ran an unorthodox system that relied on the parts to his unflexible offense being up to par. He needed the go long guy. The bubble guy. The RB. He couldn’t achieve that synergy on a consistent basis and that made for painful years. But when he did have his group, man were those years special.

When we got consistent QB and WR play the offense was incredible. One thing Gus did was raise the floor. Now being top 25 isn’t good enough. We must compete for championships every 3-4 years and in todays game that puts you in the National championship position.

Anyway back to this team and this fall.
