Not sure. KN has said there's a chance AU might. I am curious to see if Grimes pursues grad transfers as often as Hand did

Really depends on how guys like Calvin Ashley, Nick Brahms, Brodarious Hamm and Kaleb Kim have developed. I think we will have a solid starting 5, just not sure how deep after those 5 we will be

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Tigers contending for more top prospects than normal (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn has signed 17 top-100 prospects in the Gus Malzahn era. In his six seasons, the Tigers have average 2.83 top-100 prospects per signing class. There have been a few classes — the 2014 class and the 2016 class — that have skewed that number.

The last two recruiting cycles, Auburn has hauled in Joey Gatewood, Matthew Hill, Calvin Ashley and TD Moultry for an even average of two per class.

Auburn already has one top-1oo prospect in the 2019 class (quarterback Bo Nix), so to match the last two seasons the Tigers would need to add one more. It’s also possible, and I’m projecting here, that wide receiver commit George Pickens rises to the top 100 once more scouts get in front of him and see how talented he is. Even if that doesn’t happen, Auburn is in a great position to sign at least one more top-1oo prospect — and likely more than one.

Below are the top-1oo prospects who the Tigers are in contention to land. I’ve separated the recruits into two categories. “Serious contenders” are the recruits who have Auburn among their top two or three schools, whether that’s from public announcements or what they’ve said to me privately. “Potential contenders” are the prospects who are considering the Tigers, have visited this spring, or have told SEC Country they plan to visit in the coming weeks and months.

By looking at the list below, it appears you’re correct, Jake. Auburn is on track to snag more top-1oo prospects than it has in recent years. There is a lot of work to be done between now and then, but the foundation is there.

Auburn recruiting: 5-star linebacker Nakobe Dean has Tigers among favorites (SECCountry)
quote:

5-star linebacker Nakobe Dean has Auburn in top group

Mark down one 5-star prospect as a potential Auburn commit.

Nakobe Dean, the No. 24-ranked player nationally, released a top list of schools and Auburn was one of them. OK, Dean’s list included 15 programs — Nebraska, Florida State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Georgia, Mississippi State, LSU, Alabama, Duke, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Stanford, Auburn, Florida and Clemson — so it wasn’t the most exclusive of top lists. It also shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Tigers cracked the top 15 when they likely would’ve made their way into a top 5 if he’d cut it that far.

Still, it’s worth mentioning Auburn’s realistic involvement with one of its top linebacker and overall targets.

Dean visited the Plains a little more than a month ago with high school teammate Raydarious Jones. Since their visit, another Horn Lake (Miss.) prospect — 3-star running back Tyler Grim — has taken a trip to Auburn. It shows Auburn is on the minds of the trio from Horn Lake.

Dean has taken several visits since his Auburn trip, but as he said at the time, the Tigers coaching staff made a major impression on him.

“I always say I want a family feel to the university. How they talk about it, they tell me it’s a family vibe. Everybody’s a family around here. You can tell,” Dean said about that visit. “They definitely impressed me.”

From talking with a few sources, one team to watch closely here is Stanford. Dean has visited LSU, Alabama and Georgia, so those are SEC programs to watch. But Dean is a high-academic guy who is intrigued by what the Cardinal have to offer.

Stanford is apparently getting everybody

Haven't seen much on who might visit this weekend yet. Don't have practice this weekend with it being spring break so not sure how busy it will be

All these SOBs will drop out of the top 100 the instant they commit.

Possibly. Not all possible Grad Transfers make their intentions known of being a GT til near the end or after the end of the Spring semester.

SMH. We don't get Bama bumps but we do get our share of bumps. A number of 4*s who signed with us last year were 3*s this time last year.

E, you know these fans who write this stuff always feel the media, the SEC, or the NCAA is always against us, so they have got to keep that chip on their shoulder.

Its the same group, that i do my SMH too, when they want AU to always fly under the radar, and not get picked to win anything in preseason. I'm tired of that mentality, and want to BE at the top, and if we fall we fall.

Auburn recruiting question of the day: What I’m hearing on Calvin Anderson (SECCountry)
quote:

The man of the hour — or maybe its better described as man of the spring — is Calvin Anderson.

Anderson has been the most sought-after grad transfer commodity since the left tackle announced his decision to leave Rice for a seven-month senior season stint at a high-profile school. He narrowed his choices to Auburn, Texas, Michigan and Oklahoma — the four programs he visited officially during the process.

Now it’s decision time.

Anderson will make his announcement Saturday. He always had his birthday, March. 25, as a hard deadline, and Anderson will make deadline by a little more than two weeks.

At this point, Anderson has kept his final decision quiet. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound tackle has been gracious with a myriad of media requests the last few months, but he’s also done a great job of keeping his favorite close to the vest. Those are the kinds of conversation Anderson and his father like to keep to themselves.

The most optimism right now comes from the Texas Longhorns, and it makes sense.

Texas has been recruiting at a high level the last year. Anderson went to high school in Austin, Texas, and has stayed in-state for his undergraduate college experience. On top of that, Texas offensive line coach Herb Hand was the first coach to go see Anderson at Rice — albeit in an Auburn shirt — so the relationship there is strong.

Anderson would be able to step in at left tackle at all four destinations, hence why those four made the cut.

Auburn still has a puncher’s chance. One source, however, described it as a “toss-up,” so the Tigers aren’t overcome with confidence.

Still, however, they feel like they gave the right, smart pitch to Anderson. Auburn plays in the SEC, which Anderson said multiple times throughout the process was the best, most recognizable conference in college football. The Tigers sold Anderson on the ability to match up daily with Auburn’s defensive line, certain to be one of the best units in the country.

To me, the smart choice would be to choose Auburn, the SEC program with high-profile games against Washington, LSU, Georgia and Alabama.

But the guess here, riding into decision day, is Texas.

How things stand with Calvin Anderson and his 4 finalists (247)
quote:

It’s not often high-level tackles are available on the graduate transfer market, but that’s exactly the situation a few blueblood programs are in with Rice’s Calvin Anderson.

A three-year starter for the Owls, Anderson drew an 82.9 grade from PFF College last season. That ranked him 42nd among all offensive tackles. A former two-star defensive end recruit from Austin (Texas) Westlake, Anderson’s morphed into a 6-foot-5, 300-pound anchor along the offensive line in his four-year tenure in Houston.

During his exploration process as a grad transfer, Anderson’s visited a number of schools. With a decision coming March 10, his final four is Auburn, Michigan, Oklahoma and Texas. Each of those programs has openings at tackle, and Anderson would be a plug-and-play option no matter where he lands.

To get a better sense of Anderson’s impending decision, 247Sports consulted its local experts at the four schools under consideration to see where things stand.

Right now, fans of Anderson’s hometown Longhorns should be feeling pretty good.

Auburn Tigers

Confidence Level: Medium-to-Low

Reason for Optimism: "Anderson keeps harping on these things: The chance to play against the best competition in the SEC, the opportunity to go against one of the best defensive lines in the country every day in practice and the promotional opportunities associated with the SEC Network." – Keith Niebuhr, Auburn Undercover

Michigan Wolverines

Confidence Level: Medium-to-High

Reason for Optimism: "Michigan has an immediate opportunity at both tackle positions for Anderson. The departure of Tim Drevno doesn't appear to be the negative that many believed it would be. On top of that, Anderson has continually pointed towards playing against the best to help him prepare for the NFL. He'd get just that practicing every day against two potential All-American defensive ends in Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich, while also getting the chance to shine in November against Nick Bosa and Ohio State." – Steve Lorenz, The Michigan Insider

Oklahoma Sooners

Confidence Level: Medium

Reason for Optimism: "With Orlando Brown exiting to the NFL, the Sooners have an obvious need at tackle. And Anderson has developed a great relationship with potential position coach Bill Bedenbaugh. His old-school, new-school mixed O-line approach, coupled with his ability to put guys in the league, has Anderson really intrigued. So, too, does the allure of possibly competing for a national championship. However, there's talk that Bobby Evans could move over from right to left tackle, and if Anderson is dead set on playing on the left side and that's any type of hindrance, it could alter his decision." — Joey Helmer, OU Insider

Texas Longhorns

Confidence Level: High

Reason for Optimism: "Texas desperately needs some immediate help up front and has made Anderson their top overall target. He has a strong relationship with new offensive line coach Herb Hand, who actually recruited him at Auburn. The biggest factor for Anderson is development for the NFL, and he feels Hand is a guy that can get him where he wants to be by this time next year. Anderson has also boasted about UT’s strength and conditioning program and nutrition program — two underrated things that tie into that aforementioned development. Anderson is a graduate of nearby Austin Westlake High School, and his stepmother is a Texas alumnus. Tom Herman, Hand and the rest of the staff hit a homerun with Anderson and his family in January on a visit and have done enough over the last couple of months to win this race." – EJ Holland, Horns247

Calvin Anderson on Auburn…

“I really enjoyed meeting with the guys and I got to meet a guy named Darius Slayton who was a wide receiver there. I mean, he’s a freak athlete, going to be a great player there. Also a very intelligent guy so we got to sit down have some hours of conversation just about life. Talking to guys who are in a similar position as you, that are trying to do similar things is always beneficial I think… and rewarding. So very happy to have a relationship with that guy. He’s a good guy.”

“But I also like Coach Malzahn because I think Coach Malzahn is a natural born/bred competitor. So I really really enjoyed that about him. I think he just tries to win. Regardless of what it is we’re trying to do, I think he’s trying to win. I mean, we were playing ping-pong and he was trying to win! We are trying to find out where we are going to eat, or get in line… he’s trying to win. So, I like that about him and I think that’s really really good to have. It’s a really good attribute to have as a coach because you know… coaches gotta win.”

“Anyway, I really enjoyed that about him. The facilities and all that were great. It checks all the boxes. All these high-level programs will check those boxes. But I enjoyed that and I enjoyed getting to sit down and watch the film to see that I have an opportunity to actually come in and make an immediate impact.”
