Q&A with Luke Deal

quote:

Here’s a quick Q&A with Deal, who committed to Auburn back in May and already has attended multiple Tigers games this season:

quote:

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: How are all the commits bonding these days? Some of you didn't know the others that well when you committed to Auburn. But now, you guys spend a lot of time together at the games and are part of a group chat. How well does the group get along with one another individually and as a whole -- and how often do you communicate?

DEAL: Man, all of the commits have a good relationship with each other. We all talk every day and already have some pretty good chemistry together.

quote:

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Auburn is in a little bit of a slump right now. The team has lost two straight and went from inside the top 10 to being unanked in a matter of weeks. As a commit, that probably hasn't been fun to watch. What is the general vibe with the other commits about that?

DEAL: Every team has off days. We understand the struggles but use it as motivation. The 2019 class wants to take Auburn to a level that they've never been before. We want that challenge.

quote:

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: When a program starts losing games and there is noise about the stability of a coaching staff, it can impact recruiting. With the commits, how solid do you think these guys are to Auburn right now?

DEAL: The guys I talk to aren't wavering. They are committed and ready to make a difference, too.

quote:

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: How about with you -- how locked in are you with Auburn right now?

DEAL: I'm 100% with Auburn. They're struggling right now but I'm still all in.

quote:

AUBURN UNDERCOVER: Who are some of the bigger recruiting targets you and the other Auburn commits are working on -- and is there anyone you feel good about Auburn’s chances with at this time?

DEAL: We’re working on Will Putnam, Noah Cain, Clay Webb, and Wanya Morris as of late. I think all of them bonded with our group of guys and we have a shot with most of them. I talk mostly with Will. I think we can get him! He’s a great dude and a monster on the field.

If T-Will is still here by signing day Pappoe probably sticks

Hard to project anything at moment with coaching rumors. If staff stays put majority of class will most likely stick

Not that it matters once Gus is fired tonight but KN seems to think AU is team to beat now for MIA commit Kingsley Eguakun

But that's only if Grimes is still around

Why do you think he will be fired now, if i read your comment right?

So NOW we get an OL commit ONLY if Grimes is here? lol.

Funny stuff going on here. Must be Halloween already.

So ya if Gus is still around sounds like good chance we flip Eguakun

Sounds like AU still optimistic about chances with William Putnam after his FSU OV. However, he's taking one to CLEM before making final decision which scares me

Need that dude badly

Sounds like FSU knocked it out of the park with him. Will definitely be a battle.

Hey look at this! I'm gonna post some crootin articles!

Auburn recruiting snapshot: 2019 class overview (247)
quote:

Just two months until the early signing period in December, Auburn appears to be sitting in a pretty good position.

As of Tuesday, the Tigers have 15 commits, the No. 12 class ranking and an average-rating-per commit of 91.91 -- well above the 4-star threshold. In a nutshell, they appear to be in a much better spot than a year ago at this time.

But some needs still have to be filled.

While the Tigers are on track to score big at several positions (quarterback, receiver, tight end, the secondary and on the defensive line), there remains uncertainty at some other spots (running back, offensive line, linebacker).

Will Auburn get back into the top 10 after just missing in the previous cycle for the first time in Gus Malzahn's tenure as Tigers coach?

Can it become the best class Malzahn has had, as he himself said was possible? That remains to be seen.

Thus far there have been more hits than misses. If that trend continues, the class could be one to remember for Auburn.

Obviously, though, there is a lot of work still to do.

And a lot of spots to fill.

All told, we estimate Auburn will sign somewhere in the 22-24 range ... but the final number never is known until singing day in February. Programs don't like that info to leak -- plus, transfers and injuries can alter things.

Here's a snapshot at where things stand for the Tigers as of today ….

TOTAL COMMITS: 15 (Most recent: Cam'Ron Kelly, DB, Aug. 22)

SPOTS TO FILL: Approximately seven to nine. This is our best guess. The final number will not be known until the February version of signing day. Many things can determine this. For example, Auburn signed fewer than 25 in the previous class largely because it didn't want to reach at certain positions. Having an extra spot paid off. It meant the Tigers had room to add quarterback Cord Sandberg in August. As of now, we project Auburn to sign 22 or 24 but that certainly can change.

CLASS RANKING: No. 12 overall, No. 5 in the SEC.

AVERAGE RATING PER COMMIT: 91.93 (90.00 is the 4-star threshold). Auburn’s average rating per commit is fith best nationally. The 2018 class had an average of 90.22.

Now, here's a position-by-position overview ...

QUARTERBACK

Committed: 1 -- Bo Nix

Spots to fill: 0

The 411: Auburn is done here, unless something drastic happens -- like a transfer, injury or suspension. The Tigers are thrilled to have Nix, a 4-star recruit, on board. He had a big year on the camp circuit. He won quarterback MVP honors at The Opening Atlanta regional, then performed well at the Elite 11 finals in California and The Opening finals in Texas. Of course, Nix also led his team to a state championship and perfect record in 2017. Now, he's having success this fall, too. Entering last Friday’s game, he was 124 of 220 (56.3 percent) for 1,795 yards, 22 touchdowns and three interceptions through seven games. Then, he threw for five touchdowns last week. He was Auburn's top quarterback target in the class and could compete for the starting job in 2019. He's an early enrollee.

RUNNING BACK

Committed: 0

Spots to fill: 1-2

The 411: Four-star recruit Noah Cain of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, Mark-Antony Richards of West Palm Beach (Fla.) Wellington and Kenny McIntosh of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) University School are Auburn's three top targets. The Tigers would love to land two of them if possible but certainly would settle for one. The Auburn staff is expected to visit all three this week. With Cain, everyone is chasing LSU but Auburn is very much in the mix. He’s taking four official visits in November, having already taken one to Auburn. With Richards and McIntosh, it could be Auburn-Miami battles with both. Richards will officially visit the Tigers the weekend of Nov. 3. McIntosh already made his Auburn official.

WIDE RECEIVER

Committed: 2 -- George Pickens and Ja'Varrius Johnson.

Spots to fill: 0-1

The 411:

Johnson appears to be extremely solid to Auburn, though he has visited Alabama a few times. The Tide has yet to offer. Pickens continues to take visits and there is chatter he may not be 100 percent. He, however, has not said that -- and Pickens was in Auburn two weekends ago to help recruit. Alabama, FSU and LSU all continue to heavily recruit him and each thinks it has a shot. Auburn, though, continues to feel fairly good about keeping Pickens in the class. Five-star prospect Jadon Haselwood of Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove, a recent de-commit from Georgia, is the biggest remaining target and he's expected to officially visit. It sounds like Auburn may also still be communicating with 4-star recruit Jalen Curry of Texas.

TIGHT END

Committed: 2 -- Luke Deal and Tyler Fromm

Spots to fill: 0

The 411: Auburn hit a grand slam at this position after not landing a tight end in the 2018 cycle. Both Deal and Fromm are 4-star recruits in the 247Sports rankings. Both can play in the backfield, attached to the line of scrimmage or out wide. Right now, Deal is known more for his blocking and Fromm for his pass catching, but each is fairly versatile. This was an area of ultra-importance in this cycle so these are two huge pickups.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Committed: 2 -- Keiondre Jones, guard; Justin Osborne, tackle.

Spots to fill: 2-3

The 411: Even though Auburn has two commitments, this remains an area to closely watch. The Tigers want a couple more inside guys and preferably another tackle, too. At guard, the Tigers are very much in the mix for 4-star recruit William Putnam of Florida. Auburn and Florida State stand out from the pack, with Clemson also right there. He'll officially visit Clemson the weekend of Nov. 17 then have a decision soon after. Auburn is in a good spot it seems at the moment but there’s a long way to go. Another inside guy to watch: Kingsley Eguakun, a Miami commit from Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood. The Tigers have a real shot at the flip. He's expected to end his recruitment soon. The you have 5-star center Clay Webb of Oxford (Ala.). Although Alabama, Clemson and Georgia are getting all the chatter, Auburn still sees itself as being a serious threat. Webb already has attended two Auburn games this season. Kamaar Bell of Georgia is another guard/center of note. At tackle, Auburn is working to flip 5-star Wanya Morris from Tennessee and 4-star Charles Cross from FSU and hopes both will officially visit. In-state Bama commit Amari Kight also might officially visit.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Committed: 3 -- Jamond Gordon, end/tackle; Jaren Handy, end/tackle; Colby Wooden, end, Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer.

Spots to fill: 2-3

The 411: In Gordon and Handy, Auburn has two of the best prospects in Mississippi committed. But other schools have continued to come after these guys so the Tigers can't afford to take the foot off the gas until they sign. Neither is an early enrollee either. Gordon is flirting hard with Ole Miss. Alabama, Florida and Ole Miss are after Handy. Wooden is an early enrollee and seems to be locked in with the Tigers. There are others to watch, and here are three: At the buck, Derick Hall of Mississippi is a top target. It's an Auburn-Mississippi State battle for his commitment with the Tigers currently in front. Also, Auburn is trying to flip Vols commit LeDarrius Cox, a tackle. Most of our sources think Cox will land at Auburn. Additionally, you could see Alabama tackle commit Justin Eboigbe officially visit. Finally .... Auburn continues to heavily recruit Ishmael Sopsher a 5-star tackle from Amite (La.). He attended an Auburn game earlier this year and could return for an official.
