Thai,

I really look forward to Newkirk as well, for his sake. The poor kid has tried for so long to get here and then injures his achilles. I hope he has his leg strength back in time for the fall, not just healed but has his strength back.

On OL recruiting -

I’m at the the point where I trust Grimes to identify some big guys that will work hard. Felt like Hand had a bunch of kids that were just happy to have a uniform.

Woah this is some big news. Sounds like 5* OT Devontae Dobbs isn't a pipe dream. Wiltfong is reporting that he's set 2 OVs & his first is June 8th to AU

Michigan State & Ohio State are considered teams to beat

KN put up a recruiting insider this morning. Here's summary

- After speaking with 5* LB Owen Pappoe along with a number of ppl close to his recruitment, KN had five main takeaways. First, everyone believes Pappoe is solid to AU & don't think it will change. Second, he might still take visits to other schools but admits to KN it's not a sure thing. Third, Pappoe honestly believes AU's class this year will shock ppl. KN notes that recruits commonly say that so we will see if he can deliver. Fourth, he's indeed working hard to recruit 5* CB Andrew Booth & thinks AU has a real shot at him. Finally, he will be at BCW June 2nd

- KN says he spoke with a guy he really trusts about 5* CB Andrew Booth's recruitment & that source told him it's a true 50/50 battle right now between AU/CLEM. Believes UGA has faded but KN says hard to fully count them out for UGA kids. Source believes if AU can get Booth on campus for BCW that could possibly put AU in the lead. AU will watch his spring game tonight

- Some bad news. Everyone close with 5* OT Wanya Morris believe he's locked in with the Vols. Apparently he and his family are not a fan of the recruiting process & so have shut things down after commitment. AU has given them some space since recruitment due to that fact but will keep tabs on him moving forward.

- AU will visit 5* LB Nakobe Dean today. Dean has only made on trip to AU which KN thinks should be a concern for Tigers' chances (I agree). He's going to Athens for 2nd time & UGA is selling him hard on UGA's academics. That's a major thing for both Dean & his mom which is why Stanford is a real threat. Dean will also visit Clemson on that trip. He's been to Bama, LSU & OM multiple times this spring as well. KN seems to think this recruitment is wide open but AU has to get him back on campus again soon. Also can AU staff sell him on AU academics

- KN said he ran into AU signees Mike Harris & Jalil Irvin at Grayson spring game. Both excited about getting to AU. Harris is really excited about AU linebacker situation. Wants to learn behind the 3 seniors this year then make a strong push for starting role in 2019. Irving has kept track of AU's center situation this spring & thinks he has a chance to contribute early. Both can't believe first college game is just a few months away

Overall mostly good news. Really need to get Booth on campus again for BCW. If that happens, we might just pull this thing off. I don't think AU's a real threat for Dean honestly & wouldn't mind seeing us push harder elsewhere but that could change if he visits for BCW. Morris news doesn't surprise me. Gotta hope something blows up in his recruitment for things to change but I also wouldn't be surprise if he took a few more secret visits to the Plains over the next few months

Auburn continues evaluating elite pass rusher in its backyard (SECCountry)
quote:

The quick answer to question No. 1: There isn’t a specific timeline in place. “Soon” isn’t the answer you want, but it’s the best to give right now. My speculation is he will commit before or at Big Cat Weekend, but again, that’s educated guessing.

This question of the day will be dedicated to the second question.

It’s a topic touched on in a notebook earlier in the week.

Mohamoud Diabate, the 4-star outside linebacker, from Auburn High School — right in the Tigers backyard — visited over the weekend. It was a long-awaited visit for many fans in the Auburn recruiting sphere. He’s been offered and recruited by Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida, Michigan and many others. But, for one reason or another, Auburn hasn’t offered.

Let one thing be clear: The lack of offer doesn’t mean Auburn isn’t interested.

Diabate’s visit is a step in the right direction. It gave him his first real opportunity to sit down and talk extensively with defensive line coach Rodney Garner and linebackers coach Travis Williams. The Tigers see him as a nice fit for the Buck role in the defense. There are a few other prospects in this class Auburn is pursuing, from an offer standpoint, more heavily — Derick Hall (Gulfport, Miss.) and Khris Bogle (Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons) — but Diabate is being evaluated thoroughly.

Diabate camped last summer and didn’t have the stature Auburn likes in its Buck. He has grown substantially in the last year, and his work ethic stands out among his peers. Speculating again, I expect Auburn will offer at some point.

Whether it’s too late is a different discussion.

5-star offensive lineman sets June official visit with Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:

5-star tackle sets official visit to Auburn

Here’s another 5-star player to be mindful of: offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs.

The tackle from Belleville, Mich., confirmed to SEC Country on Thursday that he has an upcoming official visit set to Auburn. Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports was the first to report this news. Dobbs will take his Auburn official visit on June 8, a few days after Big Cat Weekend, so the likelihood of Tigers buzz leading up to his trip is high.

This will be the third known trip that Dobbs has taken to the Plains. That’s a substantial amount for a prospect from Michigan.

Dobbs visited last football season, early in the fall. He and a few of his high school teammates took a trip to the Southeast. They checked in for an Auburn practice last fall and the Tigers did enough to secure a return visit. Dobbs took that second trip earlier this spring when he visited several southeastern schools. Georgia and Auburn are the two that have made a lasting impression on Dobbs.

From talking with sources, it’s clear that Dobbs sits near the top of the offensive lineman recruiting board. He’s listed as the No. 3 tackle and No. 10 overall prospect nationally. The Tigers staff seems to believe Dobbs has the versatility to play tackle or guard. In conversations with Auburn coaches, Dobbs has been told the Tigers like his upside as much as a guard prospect as a tackle.

That scouting lines up similarly to what other elite programs have told him, as well. There are several teams to watch for with Dobbs: Auburn, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Southern Cal, Michigan State, Alabama, Clemson and Florida State.

With zero offensive tackles in this class, Dobbs immediately emerges as one of the most important uncommitted targets for Auburn in the 2019 cycle.

Why Jalil Irvin decommitted from ‘dream’ school Michigan, ultimately chose Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Jalil Irvin got swept up in Jim Harbaugh’s satellite camp push into SEC territory early in his recruiting process. But two years after committing to Michigan, the offensive lineman is getting ready to play for Auburn football.

Irvin, one of two offensive linemen whom Auburn signed in the 2018 class, will arrive on the Plains later this month. He’ll room with fellow incoming interior lineman Kam Stutts and get to work at center under new position coach J.B. Grimes.

Irvin, who is a Detroit native whose family relocated to the South, committed to the Wolverines the summer before his junior year but de-committed a couple of months later after a lack of contact from the school. (That didn’t last long, though, as he visited Ann Arbor in February 2017.) By March 2017, he was committed to play for Gus Malzahn and the Tigers.

SEC Country caught up with Irvin at Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Ga., on Wednesday. Here is some of the conversation with Irvin about his recruiting process, why he ultimately picked Auburn and how he thinks the Tigers are about to hit their “peak” as a program.

JALIL IRVIN: I’m really excited just to get on to the next chapter in my life — a new football chapter, a new academic chapter.

So it’s going to be exciting for me to get to experience college life soon. I can’t wait for it. Ready for the new challenges.

What ultimately got you to Auburn over a lot of those other schools?

The biggest thing was the coaching staff and the family vibe I felt. When I take visits to say, Florida, Georgia or Florida State, it wasn’t really a family vibe. I felt really different. I felt really comfortable at Auburn.

It was the best fit for me. I couldn’t really complain about anything — academics are good, players are cool. We’re in it for the SEC every year. I can’t complain about anything. It’s the best fit for me all-around.

You were committed to Michigan as a sophomore. What made you decide to go in a different direction?

The de-commitment, it was mainly just … I really didn’t enjoy the recruiting process, so mainly, I had to make the best decision for me. Michigan was my dream offer because I’m from Michigan. That’s home to me, but I had to make the best decision for me.

It was a business decision for me at the end of the day. I just had to make the right choice. I took a lot of visits, and I found Auburn to be the best fit for me.

What was it like to commit to Auburn the spring before your senior year and then stick with it? You didn’t have to worry about a lot of the drama that comes with recruiting.

It was really good. I didn’t really have to worry about other colleges after I committed. Colleges were still hitting me up like Ohio State, but eventually, they gave up because they saw that I was done with the process.

The second time I committed, I knew I was going to be done with it and that it was the right choice. Schools stopped coming after me. It was nice to not have coaches hit me up during class or stuff like that. It was really relaxing. I was back to myself.

You played the role of a recruiter after you committed. Did you like that?

It was really cool. I felt like I could give a real good pitch to them and get them to see why we’re one of the best schools in the country. You can come here and help us play and beat Alabama every year — which we plan on doing — beat Georgia, beat those types of schools. Why go to those schools when you can come to Auburn?

We’ve got the best coaching staff in the country. It’s a family vibe. No kid wants to go to college and feel left out and feel like they don’t fit in. It’s the best of both worlds here.
