Didn't really understand why we we've been so focused on competing with Bama in state in previous years.
In reality we haven't been much. There were only 4 in state recruits each of the past 2 classes that both teams truly wanted & only 3 in the 2016 class.

I'm gonna say a 7. I think like Coynis Miller last year & Garner, Pappoe is gonna have a hard time flipping on T-WILL. Also seems like his family is bought in which is usually the concern in a recruitment like this. If we don't suck this year on the field & T-WILL's still coaching linebackers I think we keep him

No idea how big an impact this will end up actually having on some top recruits like Andrew Booth. That's what I am really interested to see

After 2 misses, here are 5 tackles who could join Auburn’s 2019 recruiting class (SECCountry)
quote:

This week wasn’t all good news for Auburn recruiting.

In the matter of a few days, top tackle targets Amari Kight and Wanya Morris committed to Alabama and Tennessee, respectively. Many people would argue that tackle is the biggest position of need in the 2019 class after Auburn was shut out at the position in the 2018 cycle. However, the remaining eligibility and youth of Prince Tega Wanogho, Jack Driscoll, Calvin Ashley and Austin Troxell don’t offer up the “immediate playing time” sales pitch that comes with a typical top-need recruiting situation.

Auburn will pursue a few top tackles despite its early misses on Kight and Morris. Here are the five Tier 1 tackles who the Tigers have a realistic chance at signing.

Devontae Dobbs, 5 stars, Belleville, Mich.

To my knowledge, Devontae Dobbs has visited Auburn twice. He plans to make a third trip.

Dobbs visited Auburn last fall for a football practice. He returned this spring for a quick day trip with some teammates before heading over to Athens to see Georgia. Those two programs are two of the more likely schools to pick Dobbs out of Michigan.

Ranked the No. 3 tackle and No. 10 overall prospect, Dobbs is the highest-ranked tackle the Tigers have pursued in the 2019 class. I’d expect to see Dobbs back on campus this summer.

Side note: Some scouts see Dobbs as a guard. Auburn likes his versatility.

Xavier Truss, 4 stars, Warwick, R.I.

Penn State has to be considered the favorite for Xavier Truss, but there are a few Southern schools that can get in the mix.

Auburn is one of them.

Earlier this spring, Truss took a Southeast tour to Auburn, Georgia, Clemson and Alabama. He didn’t expect Auburn to stand out, but it was a much different conversation after the visit. Truss said Auburn impressed him the most, based on expectations.

Still, the Tigers will have to play from behind on this one. Penn State has an advantage because of familiarity. Michigan offers a proximity advantage. His relationship with Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman makes Auburn the No. 2 choice among SEC schools.

But as Truss told me earlier this spring, when he makes it back to Auburn he easily could see the Tigers making a major move on his interest list.

Darius Thomas, 4 stars, Jonesboro, Ark.

There hasn’t been much noise about Darius Thomas and Auburn this spring.

Thomas is the No. 3 prospect in Arkansas. Gus Malzahn has enough ties to that state to make Auburn a likely contender for 6-foot-6 offensive lineman. Thomas and his father visited Auburn last season for the matchup against Louisiana-Monroe. At the time, they indicated a growing interest in the Tigers.

With that said, I’m not aware of a spring visit from Thomas. If that changes the Tigers could become a factor for Thomas in what likely would become a battle against the in-state Razorbacks.

Warren McClendon, 4 stars, Brunswick, Ga.

Here’s another prospect who doesn’t have much Auburn-related commentary around his recruitment.

Warren McClendon has family ties to Georgia (multiple family members played there) and South Carolina (his uncle is offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon). Those two programs have been at the forefront of his recruiting conversation.

There’s a reason for my addition of McClendon in this article, however. McClendon is from Brunswick, Ga., which is in the same county as Frederica Academy, the home of recent Auburn commit Jaylin Simpson and his teammate Jashawn Sheffield. There’s a relationship between Simpson, Sheffield and McClendon that should — at the very least — grab the attention of McClendon enough to take a visit.

Wanya Morris, 4 stars, Grayson Ga.

OK, yes, he just committed to Tennessee. And, truthfully, everything Wanya Morris has said to me since that Volunteers commitment has convinced me that he wants to be a central figure of the rebuilding process in Knoxville. With a mentality like that, it’s hard to see a flip happening.

Owen Pappoe and Jakai Clark have a different take. Both Auburn commits said Morris is their No. 1 recruiting priority. It won’t be easy for Morris — who admitted to waffling recently — to ignore the daily commentary from his two high school teammates and close friends. The Tigers aren’t going to give up on this one.

Gus Malzahn sees ‘special’ potential for Auburn’s 2019 recruiting class (SECCountry)
quote:

Gus Malzahn sees ‘special’ potential for 2019 class

Even if it looked the same, Gus Malzahn’s most recent “boom!” tweet meant more than most.

Malzahn sent his traditional celebratory message on Twitter after 5-star linebacker Owen Pappoe committed to Auburn on Tuesday. It read: “Boom!!!!!! War Eagle” with six exclamation points to signify the sixth 2019 pledge. There wasn’t anything different about Malzahn’s immediate reaction.

But it’s clear the shockwaves of Pappoe’s major announcement give confidence to Malzahn and staff for the rest of the 2019 class.

Malzahn spoke with reporters Wednesday prior to the start of his annual summer Ambush speaking tour across the Southeast. While unable to speak specifically about Pappoe, Malzahn made it clear he expects Auburn’s 2019 class to build on the recent momentum.

“It’s got a chance to be a special class, there’s no doubt about that,” Malzahn said. “We felt that way at the end of the season with everything. The future is so bright, and I think everybody kind of sees that. Last year, we were very close and really think we’ve got a chance to do something special the next three or four years. That’s been our message, and it’s going to be a very good class.”

Malzahn’s comments follow up some big statements from Pappoe himself earlier in the week.

The 5-star linebacker commit from Grayson, Ga., made a bold statement following his Tuesday night announcement. He doesn’t just expect the Tigers to have a “special class” — he thinks it can be the best, telling SEC Country he truly believes Auburn can align the stars for the No. 1 class.

He isn’t the first highly rated 2019 prospect to say something similar this spring, either.

“Just seeing the future of us possibly playing together at Auburn, that’s big,” top running back target Noah Cain said about his relationship with quarterback commit Bo Nix. “Like Coach Malzahn said, if everything goes in [Auburn’s] favor, we could be the top recruiting class in the country.”

With Pappoe’s commitment, momentum is sure to pick up from here.

Auburn coaches have been out on the road, recruiting in full force the last two weeks since the evaluation period hit. That will continue until the last week of June. In that time, Auburn will host its 10th annual Big Cat Weekend recruiting event on June 2 and go through the June on-campus camp circuit.

“They’ll be on the road until really the month of June and then of course Big Cat comes up and we’re very excited about that. This’ll be the 10th annual and so we think we’ll have a very good group for that. We think it’ll be a real special one,” Malzahn said. “We get into our camps in June. It’s a little bit different this year. The month of July for the most part is dead until you get to the last weekend. That’s really the new part about it, but kind of looking forward.”

Warning, another Dawg homer article but some interesting details in here on Jadon Haselwood. Namely, his mom seems like a big fan of AU

5-star commit Jadon Haselwood recaps his wild Rose Bowl memory (Dawgnation)
quote:

ELLENWOOD, Ga. — Jadon Haselwood committed to Georgia more than a year ago. He was back at G-Day last month and remains pledged to play for the Bulldogs.

But he’s going to take his official visits. That was something he always said he would do. True to his word, Georgia’s highest-rated Class of 2019 commit recently took an official visit to Oklahoma.

He has a lot of family ties to that school.

His father went to Oklahoma. Haselwood’s mother was also on that official visit and he told DawgNation that she has also started checking out other schools.

He said she’s been to Auburn recently and liked what she saw there.

Yet before anyone starts reaching for the panic button, we’d like to allow him to share the story of how he viewed the Rose Bowl.

Well, we should actually say how he celebrated Lorenzo Carter blocking that kick in The Rose Bowl. He did something that most Georgia fans might have also done that night.

“I went outside,” he said. “It was 30-something degrees and I was running down the street. I was happy for them. It has been a long time coming.”

Fans will be fans, but maybe that will help them see Georgia the way Haselwood does.

“They should know that,” he said. “But fans are going to be fans. I am not really going to worry about it.”

He actually could be flagged for premature celebration with that, too.

“When ‘Zo blocked that field goal, that’s when I knew we had it won,” Haselwood said. “I knew it was over with. I was excited. It was cool outside, but I didn’t feel it like that. I had so much adrenaline running through me that night.”

And yes, he was able to provide us with some video of that.

For the record, he still said he feels excited about joining the Bulldogs in January.

“I do,” he said. “I sure do. Nothing has changed.”

Jadon Haselwood’s reaction to the Owen Pappoe decision

In the event anyone might have been under a rolling stone the last few days, there was a big commitment on Tuesday. Owen Pappoe, the 5-star linebacker from Grayson High, committed to Auburn.

What did Haselwood think about that? He was trying to get him to join him in Athens, but he wasn’t going overboard there.

Haselwood, like most elite recruits, does respect the fact that every recruit has to make their own decision.

“What I am going to say is that it didn’t surprise me,” he said. “But I’m happy for him. That’s where he should go. He probably will not have anybody ahead of him when he gets there. He’s got a good chance of playing and going to the league in three years.”

He will still encourage Pappoe to join him at Georgia, however.

“I will,” Haselwood said. “But if that’s not what he is comfortable at, I won’t press it. But I’m not going to lie. Georgia was where he wanted to go. But obviously Auburn came in and he now feels like that’s the place where he should be.”

The nation’s No. 1 wide receiver in the 247Sports 2019 composite looked at Pappoe’s choice as a “business decision.”

Haselwood said he hasn’t scheduled any other officials, but he did enjoy that official to Oklahoma.

“It was pretty cool,” Haselwood said. “I already knew what I wanted to see, but I couldn’t really see it because of the wind there. It was blowing. But I know they can throw the ball. They are going to sling it.”

The Sooners are coming hard, but he declined to name them or any other school as his No. 2 school.

“I’m not going to give anybody a rank,” he said. “But if they are showing love to me, then they know that I am showing love back.”

Auburn should also get an official from Haselwood eventually.

“I like Auburn,” he said. “I’m cool with Coach [Kodi] Burns and [Travis Williams]. They are cool. Cool people that I can relate to.”

His mother enjoyed her visits to Auburn and Oklahoma.

“My mom liked Auburn,” Haselwood said. “She liked Oklahoma, too. She’s going wherever I go.”

Definitely not out of the picture. AU just has work to do. He's coming back for BCW. That's a big chance right there. Basically TX is in the lead right now but AU still has a shot

Still have a shot at Emery too but LSU is team to beat. Both still very much in play especially if AU can get em back on campus

3* S Aaron Beasley --> AU might be the favorite

3* TE Tyler Fromm --> 4th trip to AU. UF making a push

No mention of Jashawn Sheffield who might visit this weekend. If not this weekend then probably next

We need to. Kid can play and getting a foot in the door at Marietta where the talent is crazy right now couldn't hurt.
