Still very surprising too that we might take 5 WRs.

Looks like we are using more 3/4 WR sets and we need depth.

Assuming no transfers and everyone comes back for 2018

FR- 5
SO- 3
JR- 3
SR- 2

Doesn't seem too unreasonable, especially since Slayton/NCM may make early jumps after 2018

Huh? That would prob make one, maybe two undrafted free agents. Which doesn't mean I don't think they are good college players.

4* LB Zakoby McClain posted on the twitter that he will be committing tomorrow

If what TigePaw said is true, looks like it will most likely be to Auburn.

5 WRs is a lot, and Gus is a sucker for talent versus need.

Also seems to be the most volatile position (or was with DCraig), so if you can get that kind of quality depth then I’m fine with it

KN confirms he thinks McClain picks AU tomorrow. Said getting him on campus was big & think AU convinced him commitment window isn't open long

Feels like appropriate time to post this article

Recruiting question of the day: Who’s next to join Auburn’s 2018 class?
(SECCountry)

quote:

Normally this space will be reserved for fans and readers who direct Auburn recruiting questions toward me. We’ll make an exception for Asa Martin.

The Tigers running back commit has been one of the more vocal leaders in the 2018 class. He is recruiter as much as recruit. So last week, when Richard Jibunor and Seth Williams committed on the same day — giving Auburn even more buzz than it already had — Martin asked the all-important question to his fellow Class of 2018 class members as spots dwindle in Auburn’s class.

WHO NEXT?

There are several candidates for prospects who are on the verge of a decision. Trey Hill claims he could decide any time between now and Dec. 20, with no specific timetable in mind. The same can be said for Jerome Carvin. Kayode Oladele has a Dec. 12 decision coming for his birthday. Beyond that, there’s a long list of recruits who could jump on board sooner rather than later at the prospect of spots filling up, and that’s the blessed recruiting position the Tigers have found themselves in.

One prospect, in particular, left the Iron Bowl feeling much closer to committing that previously believed.

“I’m making it soon,” 4-star linebacker Zakoby McClain said after the game.

McClain has had a back-and-forth recruitment.

There were points in the summer when I thought he was destined to choose Auburn, but he’d hesitate. He would consider another program, or back out of a visit to the Plains. At one point this fall, it seemed like he was moments from taking a visit to LSU and committing there. That visit — and commitment, obviously — never happened. That’s when West Virginia picked up a visit and got in it.

Those are the three programs who will be involved when McClain makes his decision “soon,” which he described as a month or sooner. My sources are leaning on the side of sooner — much sooner.

There’s a high probability McClain will have a decision by the end of this week, just a few days after visiting Auburn and getting a lot of personal time with linebackers coach Travis Williams before and after the game. My understanding is those conversations were very frank, but they ended with both sides feeling great about the other.

“We talked a lot. He was talking about how I like the schools [recruiting me] and what I want to do [with my recruitment] and what I like about [Auburn],” McClain said. “I loved it.”

If we’re keeping count, McClain — who doesn’t take many visits — has been to Auburn twice, West Virginia once and LSU zero times. Not sure if that’s enough data for a “follow the visits” approach, but the timing fits.

I have been able to confirm that McClain is back in the very good graces of the Auburn coaching staff. They love his speed, which coincidentally (or not), is what he said he enjoys about the Tigers’ defense: “They play fast,” he said after the visit.

The real speed could be the quickness with which McClain moves through the back stages of this process. He hasn’t been taken visits and his recruitment has been somewhat of a mystery after pushing back a prior commitment date. He made my class projection in May, June, July, August and September. McClain took a hiatus from the mock class in October when he was replaced with Alabama commit Quay Walker, but he returned last week in my November projection.

He seems set on shutting down his recruitment. Auburn’s buzz, his recent visit and the fact he’s already set up a Dec. 10 official visit — which will likely be after he makes a college decision — should give the Tigers a lot of hope they’ll add their second linebacker in the near future.

Sounds like T-WILL made it clear. Get on board now before this ship sails. Super pumped if we pull this kid

FWIW back in like March, Michael Harris said in an interview that T-WILL told him he was gonna get Harris & McClain as his LBs in this class. Dude is about to do just that

We're going to have a lot of the Monty Atkinson Richard Mcbride type guys but we got two thumpers last class so LB looking good

Ya 5 seems like a high number but I just don't know how you could turn either Ross or Schwartz away. Maybe if you get Ross before Schwartz but that's not gonna happen with Ross waiting to Feb to decide. If both want on board, take em

I think you will see a mix. Harris is a thumper while McClain is more of an Atkinson type. We want speed at the SAM spot where Darrell Williams plays & more pop at the MIKE & WILL

Tracked down that article where Harris talks about T-WILL wanting him & McClain. It was posted in April

Can Auburn overtake Buckeyes, Urban Meyer, for top recruit? (247)
quote:

When he started chatting with Kristi Malzahn, wife of Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, during his most recent visit to Auburn, 4-star linebacker Michael Harris of Tucker (Ga.) got the feeling he was a special recruit to the Tigers.

“His wife said I had (Malzahn) doing the happy dance,” Harris said. “She said, I’m the only person that can make him do the happy dance.”

Landing Harris, a top target, won’t be easy for Auburn, but the Tigers are giving it their best shot.

Right now, Ohio State leads — and leads big. He grew up a fan of that program and when the Buckeyes offered, it was special.

But Harris couldn’t make it to that school as expected last weekend and isn’t sure exactly when he will get to Columbus, Ohio. That, it seems, would give the programs tied for No. 2 — Auburn and Georgia — more time to build a relationship with him.

As at stands, Harris already is closer with Auburn linebackers coach Travis Williams than any person recruiting, Harris said.

“He,” Harris said, “is like a father to me.

He also noted, “He’ll hit me up every day or any time he can. … I feel like I can hit him up whenever I want to or call him and he’ll answer. I feel like I’ve been building my relationship with him the best.”

Based on his conversations with Williams, Harris, the No. 11 inside backer in the 247Sports rankings, thinks he is high on the Auburn board.

“Coach Williams tells me every time I talk to him, I’m his guy,” Harris said. “I’m his No. 1. He wants me and Zakoby (McClain) from Valdosta in the middle. That’s his two main guys in the middle.”

Williams isn’t all Harris likes about Auburn. Something else stood out during his two recent visits there.

“Everybody is like family,” Harris said.

Auburn’s top WR targets Anthony Schwartz, Justyn Ross update recruitments after Iron Bowl (SECCountry)
quote:

South Florida WR names new leader in recruitment

Before coming to the Iron Bowl — all the way from Plantation, Fla. — Anthony Schwartz played in a Friday night game that went to triple overtime. He was a big part of that game, scoring 2 receiving touchdowns and a kick return touchdown to pull out the 1-point win and advance. The late finish made for a quick turnaround from South Florida to east Alabama.

Schwartz is glad he did it.

“The 10-hour drive was worth it. That was one of the greatest games I’ve seen. After playing a great game, then experiencing a great [Auburn] game, it’s just great,” Schwartz said after his first Iron Bowl.

Then, the longtime Florida lean (perceived, at least) made a bold claim.

“I would say Auburn’s my leader,” Schwartz said.

As Florida has endured a coaching change, Auburn has taken advantage of its late-season hot streak.

It’s not a glaring lead Auburn has over Florida, but it is a lead. Schwartz’s conversation with SEC Country came prior to the Gators confirming Dan Mullen as its new coach, so that detail is sure to have some kind of effect on Schwartz.

But as of last weekend, his primary concern had to do with Florida’s willingness under the new staff to let him play football and run track, which he has an opportunity to do at an Olympic level.

“It affects me mainly because I was so used to the old staff, and Coach [McElwain] was already letting me do both. Now, I don’t know if the next coach is going to let me do both,” he said. “It’s a little bit of both [Florida hurting itself and Auburn helping itself]. I’ve always liked Auburn. Now with the coaching change, it’s the way it is.”

It’s worth noting Schwartz, when speaking with GatorCountry.com, didn’t give the Mullen hire a 5-star review. That could work in Auburn’s favor.

As for a timeline, Schwartz has pushed things up a tad from his initial signing day preference. It’s now a December or January decision. He wants to finish up his American Heritage (Fla.) season and then wrap up his recruitment. January seems more likely since that’s when Schwartz anticipates he’ll take his official visit to Auburn.

The interesting thing to track with all wide receivers — Schwartz and Justyn Ross — is how the spots fill up. My sources suggest both would be takes regardless, but numbers are crunched already, and it’s only going to get worse.

But Auburn likes the versatility Schwartz adds to the committed receiver group.

“What they’re saying to me is, all their receivers committed, they don’t really play my position of wide receiver,” he said.

Top WR calls Iron Bowl ‘best Auburn game’ he’s attended

Few prospects have been at Auburn more the last two years than Justyn Ross. He’s one of the most familiar faces on the Plains for college football Saturdays. Ross knows the Jordan-Hare environment as well or better than any other prospect in the Class of 2018.

Even the laid-back Ross left the stadium Saturday in awe of the performance and atmosphere.

“Oh, it was great,” he said. “It was probably the best Auburn game I’ve been to.”

That’s saying something for someone who has been to so many, but it’s also an indication of the progression the Tigers have made over the last two seasons.

Auburn has always been considered a serious contender for Ross because of the proximity to his home in Phenix City. But he’s grown quite fond of Clemson on his unofficial visits to the program, as well as his official visit there earlier this month. Clemson’s wide-open passing game that gets multiple wide receivers involved has been the major draw for Ross.

As he’s watched Auburn’s season, Ross has seen some serious development in that regard on the Plains.

“I believe they can pass. Auburn, they’ve been rolling this year,” Ross said. “I don’t want to say they don’t trust their receivers, but they don’t have that big, deep-threat receiver. They can get stuff up under the defense, but I don’t think they can go over the top as much.”

Hence his patience because — in addition to Seth Williams — Ross feels like he can be that option for Auburn.

While others, myself included, have labeled Clemson as Ross’ destination, Ross has suggested all along that his three main schools can all get involved. He’s already taken an official visit to Clemson. Ross confirmed over the weekend that he’ll only take two more official visits, to Auburn and Alabama.

So, in Ross’ mind, nothing has changed. He doesn’t have a leader, and the two in-state schools still have a shot.

“I don’t know for sure. I can’t tell you [who is leading] because I don’t know. But Auburn, they’re in it,” he said.

It’s still a National Signing Day decision for Ross.

Does that create an issue when it comes to spots left in the class? My sources are telling me no. While the Tigers feel great about the three they already have, and it’s possible Schwartz jumps in the class sooner than expected, Auburn would be willing to take a fifth receiver on National Signing Day as long as that wide receiver is Ross.

I’m assuming all three programs have Ross in the must-take category come signing day — regardless of how the rest of their classes shake out

Decision day for 4-star Auburn LB target

As I wrote Monday afternoon, who do I think will be the next to commit? Four-star prospect Zakoby McClain.

The Valdosta (Ga.) linebacker hasn’t had the easiest recruitment to follow, but it appears it will wrap up with simplicity. He was on the outside looking in of Auburn’s linebacker recruiting board behind guys such as Quay Walker, JJ Peterson, and Channing Tindall. With Auburn out of it for Peterson, the Tigers see Walker and Tindall as 50-50 shots at best. That’s how McClain made it back into the picture after a couple missed visits.

He plans to make his decision this evening around 7 p.m. ET between Auburn, LSU and West Virginia. McClain will release a video of some kind — he put the final touches on it Monday.

If Auburn were to land McClain, the Tigers would crack the top 10 of the recruiting rankings for the first time this cycle. That’s what I expect will happen.

We will see if he follows through

KN also put out today that Wolk's report on AU not recruiting JJ Peterson anymore is inaccurate. Apparently T-WILL still talks to him a bunch & AU is hoping to get an OV. Good chance AU will send someone to his game this week. There's a chance Pruitt leaving could help AU but this one will be tough one to pull out either way
