Why Auburn could be a factor for Anthony Schwartz

Four-star wide receiver Anthony Schwartz told SEC Country last week that he’s down to two schools: Florida and Auburn.

Florida didn’t surprise anyone, as that’s where Schwartz has been projected to end up for basically his entire recruiting process. The Gators have been the team to beat since the beginning.

As for Auburn, the Tigers have seemed more like an outsider from start to finish. But they’re fully in this thing now. Schwartz visited over the weekend and stayed from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. He spent a lot of his time with commits, as well as fellow wide receiver target Justyn Ross.

Schwartz also took another peek at the Auburn track-and-field program. The strength of that team might very well be the sprinters, which is something that matters to Schwartz, considering he’s someone who has visited Houston for track purposes only, not football.

In regard to the football side of things, there’s one clear problem with Schwartz and Florida right now. The Gators already have five wide receivers in their class right now. It’s possible they lose one or two to a flip. It’s also possible they process one out on their own to create space.

But the availability of spots in Auburn’s class is much greater than at Florida. The Tigers only have two wide receivers — Shedrick Jackson and Matthew Hill — committed right now, and they’d be willing to add one or two more with Ross, Schwartz, Seth Williams and Tommy Bush as the four realistic names.

In other words, Schwartz-to-Auburn might not be as much of a long shot as previously believed.

Honestly would rather have Ross & Williams over Schwartz. However, if we miss on Ross then bring Schwartz down. Been more impressed with his senior film. Shows a bit more than just straight line speed which is my main concern with him

Andres Fox ‘pretty set’ with silent commitment, but he doesn’t plan to announce until signing day (SECCountry)
quote:

Andres Fox ‘pretty set’ in his decision

AUBURN, Ala. — Andres Fox likes to keep things fairly close to the vest.

The Mobile Christian (Ala.) defensive lineman speaks quietly and promptly when he conducts interviews with reporters. It keeps him from revealing too much about his recruitment, and quite frankly, it speeds up the process of dealing with the media.

That’s why, when we chatted with Fox following the Auburn-Ole Miss game, the following comment created a moment of surprise.

“I’ve kinda got an idea of where I want to go. I’m pretty set,” Fox said. “I’d say it’s a silent commitment.”

Fox said he told the selected coaching staff “about a month ago.”

According to Fox, there aren’t many people that know.

It’s the family close to him and the coaching staff who he is silently committed to. Those are the only people fully in the know. And that’s how Fox intends to keep it — for a while. Despite his confidence in his decision, Fox likely won’t announce his decision until National Signing Day.

Fox visited Arizona earlier this year, but he claims it’s still the same four schools involved: Auburn, Alabama, LSU and Stanford.

He’s visited Arizona, Alabama, Auburn and Stanford so far this season. Fox would like to make it to LSU in the near future.

Of Auburn, Fox is impressed by the Tigers’ defensive line and Rodney Garner’s willingness to rotate in young defensive players.

“It would mean I’d have a chance to come in and play early if I were to do what I got to do,” Fox said. “I thought the team did good, the defense. With the offense, they looked like they can win an SEC championship.”

As for communication, little has changed.

Fox still hears from Rodney Garner and Travis Williams each about twice a week. The staff regularly sends him edits wishing him luck or congratulating him before or after his Mobile Christian games.

He’ll take other visits, as well, but Fox plans to be back at Auburn for the Georgia and Alabama games.

After his most recent trip, Fox feels like he’s a good match for the Tigers defense.

“I’m a perfect fit,” he said.

That’s the extent of what you’ll get from Fox. But I know, for most of you, that’s not enough. You want the juice.

Who is Fox silently committed to?

Let me preface with some transparency: This is more speculation and tea-leaves-reading than anything else. Most of this hunch is based on conversations I’ve had with Fox dating back to January.

I expect it to be Auburn.

Since the beginning of the process, Fox has always been most comfortable with the Tigers and their coaching staff. Back in the spring, Fox said to me more than once that he felt like ending up at Auburn made a lot of sense. On top of that, Kevin Steele, Garner and Williams laid out a specific plan for Fox’s growth and development early on.

I’d also like to go back to what Garner said at assistant coach media day. He said Auburn was close to landing another commitment, a guy he felt could start outside and end up inside. That was about two months ago, and Fox said his silent commitment came “about a month ago,” so the timeline matches up some.

There have been murmurs about LSU and Stanford in the past. Obviously Alabama’s pull will be hard to pass up, but Auburn has remained as a constant at or near the top for the entirety of Fox’s process. So I stand by what I’ve suggested since early spring: I think Fox will choose Auburn.

With that said, four months between now and National Signing Day is a long time to hold off teams such as Alabama, LSU and Stanford. And the same can be said for Auburn if my silent-commitment speculation is off base.

Very interesting.... I know some on here aren't as high on Fox as others but I really like his potential

Jalen Cunningham position switch

One of the top players in the state of Alabama has made an important career decision.

Jalen Cunningham, the state’s No. 15 overall player, according to the 247Sports composite, announced via Twitter that he’s moving from defensive line to offensive line. Before the switch, he was ranked the No. 491 overall player in the nation, and the 33rd-ranked defensive tackle.

It’s still up in the air how this affects his recruitment, but it makes sense.

I’ve heard three SEC assistant coaches from different programs suggest Cunningham would make a really good guard, likely better than at defensive tackle. It appears that message has gotten around to Cunningham, who held offers from Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Auburn and others.

As an Alabama fan, the Crimson Tide were going to be tough to beat if they were willing to take his commitment.

Alabama and Auburn both only have two offensive linemen committed in this class. Auburn plans to take four or five, so there are potentially spots available, but that’ll depend heavily on how the staff evaluates Cunningham as an offensive lineman.

With 2 interior guys already committed and us looking better with Trey Hill, don't see us pursuing. Think this dude eventually lands with Mississippi State

October Recruiting Snapshot

It's been awhile since I have done a snapshot. Honestly, since season has started recruiting has been pretty quiet. Hopefully that changes this weekend with Coynis Miller. Either way, I am bored and wanna get this thread going again so here we go...

Commits
4* QB Joey Gatewood
4* WR Matthew Hill
4* RB Asa Martin
4* S Quindarious Monday
4* LB Michael Harris
3* RB Shaun Shivers
3* S Jamien Sherwood
4* DE/DT Daquan Newkirk
3* OG/C Jalil Irvin
3* OG Kameron Stutts
3* WR Shedrick Jackson
3* ATH Kolbi Fuqua
3* Star Josh Marsh

2019 4* WR George Pickens

Since I last did this AU landed 2 4* offensive targets in Martin & Hill. Martin was a big pickup as AU beat out Bama for a guy they really wanted and gives AU a solid RB class for this season. Hill was a top AU target for a long time that AU finally got on board. Clemson making push for Hill as a safety target tho

QB
4* Brevin White --> Brother played for Lindsey, currently committed to Princeton. Expected to visit in November
3* Steven Krajewski --> Lindsey close with his head coach, camped at AU in summer
NR AJ Curry --> Has popped on AU's radar after a breakout senior season. No offer but AU is evaluating

RB
4* Harold Joiner --> AU probably out of this race but wouldn't be surprised if he visited in November

WR
4* Justyn Ross --> AU/BAMA/CLEM battle with CLEM thought to be leader. Has visited AU in back to back weeks
4* Seth Williams --> AU considered leader at this time. BAMA always a threat
4* Anthony Schwartz --> AU/UF battle with Gators thought to be leaders but AU making a push. Track will play a big role

TE
4* Luke Ford --> probably UGA lock with Fields committing to Dawgs
3* Michael Parker --> Wants that BAMA offer if doesn't get it probably AU
3* Tyneil Hopper --> Visited recently & is name to watch

OT
4* Dylan Wonnum --> AU emerged as leader but recently LSU/SCAR have made this a real race. Decision expected in December
4* Badara Traore --> officially visited late July, LSU probably biggest threat
3* Jalen Goss --> Former UF commit that AU is evaluating
NR Doug Johnson --> backup plan to keep an eye on

OG
4* Trey Hill --> AU/FSU/UGA battle with Noles & Tigers trending. I personally think AU is team to beat
4* Tank Jenkins --> might reemerge as target if miss on Hill
3* Jerome Carvin --> With TEN falling apart AU could get into this race

DT
4* Coynis Miller --> commits Saturday between AU/BAMA/UF. Claims Gators lead but AU insiders like Tigers chances
3* Jalen Cunningham --> switched to OL, not sure if still a target
3* Shannon Carswell --> recently visited but waiting on offer. Would be shocked if he got one

DE/Buck
4* Richard Jibunor --> AU/UF/TEN battle with Gators trending. AU insiders still think AU in good spot but will have to wait on decision
3* Andres Fox --> AU/LSU/BAMA/STAN battle, says he's committed to school privately & some think AU might be that team
3* Kayode Oladele --> AU trending up but there are some grade concerns
3* Tobe Umerah --> STAN commit visited for OM game. Name to monitor

LB
4* JJ Peterson --> AU/BAMA/UGA battle with the Tide going to be hard to beat
4* Zakoby McClain --> who the frick knows, probably WV
4* Channing Tindall --> AU/UF/UGA all pushing SCAR. Plans to visit for Iron Bowl
4* Quay Walker --> Shocked still committed to BAMA, AU/FSU trending
3* La'Dedric Jackson --> recent MIZ decommit who wants AU offer, probably a backup plan

CB
4* Kyler McMichael --> Clemson commit, AU was making a push but sounds like been shut down
4* Christian Tutt --> weird recruitment but might end up AU target
4* Saivion Smith --> Heavy BAMA lean didn't make trip this past weekend
3* Derek Turner --> would probably commit if we let him but AU evaluating options at CB
3* JaKorey Hawkins --> could emerge as target if AU misses on some other guys
3* Keith Washington --> Former MICH DB that visited recently. Relative of Bubba
Xavier Lanier --> heard nothing since BCW, name to track if he impresses this fall

S
4* Brendon Harris --> recently opened up his recruitment, if Sherwood were to flip to UF could become a target
3* Joseph Foucha --> evaluating as CB target

AU appears done at safety but Sherwood could be a guy to keep eye on

Class Prediction

Still not sure the exact number so will stick with 25. Sadly I can no longer dream we land Fields...

4* QB Joey Gatewood (Commit)
4* QB Brevin White --> to make the score look nicer
4* RB Asa Martin (Commit)
3* RB Shaun Shivers (Commit)
3* TE Tyneil Hopper --> Still not sure what we do here
4* WR Justyn Ross --> When we defeat CLEM in semi finals he won't have a choice but to pick us
4* WR Matthew Hill (Commit)
4* WR Seth Williams --> Shocking how confident this pick feels right now
3* WR Shedrick Jackson
4* OT Dylan Wonnum --> Nowhere near as confident in him anymore
4* OG Trey Hill --> I think AU leads #DealWithIt
3* OG/C Jalil Irvin (Commit)
3* OT/OG Kameron Stutts (Commit)
4* DE/DT Daquan Newkirk (Commit)
4* DT Coynis Miller --> commits during AU game Saturday
3* DE/DT Andres Fox --> some AU insiders think he's a silent so wth
3* DE/Buck Kayode Oladele -> #NigerianPipeline
4* Buck/LB Richard Jibunor --> dear god please
4* LB Michael Harris (Commit)
4* LB Quay Walker --> Big Kat & T-WILL get it done
3* CB Keith Washington --> AU seems to really be looking at JUCO CBs
4* S Quindarious Monday (Commit)
3* S Kolbi Fuqua (Commit) --> Officially has bought in to playing safety
3* S Jamein Sherwood (Commit)
3* Star Josh Marsh (Commit)

Class Score: 269.04 (8-11)

I'm really not high on Keith Washington. He got offered and committed to Michigan with a lot of guys when Harbaugh went to Prattville.

Basically I think we can do better.

Why is it a 10ish type class? Heat on Gus have anything to do with it? We need to be in the 5-7 range.

We're pretty much always in the 8-10 range. Without a few 5* guys jumping on board (which isn't happening unless some guys get huge bumps) then I am not seeing us getting there this year.

Oh I agree but I honestly not sure who that better might be right now

Kyler McMichael - doesn't look like we are gonna flip him from Clemson, had a chance but they locked him back down
Jalyn Armour-Davis - not sure he's even visited since committing to Bama
Saivion Smith - Bama lock. Maybe if they end up stealing away someone like Tyson Campbell or Patrick Surtain they decide to pass on him and we snag him but not looking good right now
Christian Tutt - having a weird recruitment. not sure he's visited since the summer

Then you got a bunch of other guys like Derek Turner, Jamari Brown, JaKorey Hawkins and Joseph Foucha that we are evaluating but haven't really pushed for just yet. Honestly not sure what we do at CB. Personally I would like us to take Turner and Foucha. Foucha could end up being a beast at our Nickel spot and Turner is a good looking athlete.

While we have done outstanding at safety recruiting this year, we are really struggling at cornerback

That's usually where Gus's classes are ranked, in the back half of the top 10

2013 - 10th
2014 - 6th
2015 - 8th
2016 - 9th
2017 - 9th

So other than the year after winning the SEC & playing for national title we have landed in the 8-10 area

quote:

Heat on Gus have anything to do with it?

Definitely didn't help. If he can finish strong this year tho it should help us out next season when hopefully he's got a much cooler seat because he won 10+ games

quote:

We need to be in the 5-7 range.

Our best shot for that was landing Fields so highly doubt it happens. Not a sure thing we are top 10 this season but I think we end up 9th or 10th again. This might be the first season tho we don't land a 5* unless someone committed or one of our top targets (like Trey Hill or Justyn Ross) get late bumps

Shouldn't be surprising tho. Gus has not had the best of records the past 3 seasons (thus the hot seat rumors) and three of our top rivals have elite recruiters as head coaches. Throw in Clemson becoming a national power and life has gotten much tougher for AU recruiting. That's why winning 10+ this season is so important. Teams can't negative recruit as much against us and gives recruits something to buy into. The 2019 class might legitimately be the best I have ever seen in the southeast so if there was ever a year to have momentum heading into a new recruiting cycle this is definitely the year

The silver lining in this is that we actually have some coaches again, and not as many headhunter recruiters. Just develop these guys and the recruiting will take care of itself in some ways.

Also a lot of Auburn's top guys this class aren't rated as high. Michael Harris, Quindarious Monday, Asa Martin, Jamien Sherwood and Matthew Hill are all guys the Auburn staff had either at the top or very near the top of their boards. Same with guys like Seth Williams and Coynis Miller who like those other guys aren't rated as highly as maybe the coaching staff thinks they should be

I would not be surprised to see some rating bumps on a few of these guys by season end but I don't think many if any will make it into the top 100. There are some very highly rated guys that we would love to have too but not looking great, guys like Justin Fields, Kyler McMichael, Jalyn Armour-Davis, JJ Peterson and Adam Anderson so it's not just that we only want underrated guys this year. It's kind of a combination of us hitting on some top guys that aren't rated as highly and missing on the top guys that are rated highly if that makes sense

Big ones too

Wiltfong is national guy who doesn't put CB picks in lightly. Says spoke with someone close to Miller before making his pick. On Jibunor says his top 2 of AU/TEN have one team clearly trending up & one away. Also says no one has been recruiting him harder than AU

Also had nice things to say about AU's top five commits

We have seen development all over the roster. Even with Carlton Davis last year, I think he was being coached out of some of his natural tendencies that got him beat at times. It paying off this year as it has become more comfortable.

We are still young on defense, and at WR. We will lose a few, but I have faith in Brown. Kids will see our guys getting drafted, and that will pay off.

We're probably safe with kj and Pettway almost certainly coming back. Even if KJ has a huge year and goes pro we would still have Pett and Miller for bigger guys. Next year we need to take 2 rbs

I see Asa Martin developing into a 215-220lb back in college. He’s already listed at 200 now. That’s not overly big, but he’s got speed with it. I can see him around a John Kelly size at Tennessee.
