Red Raiders show off a lot new faces (DecaturDaily)
quote:

If there were ever a time to purchase a Decatur football program, it’s this season.

Without a roster, it’s going to be difficult to keep up with the new faces for the Red Raiders.

Decatur lost a ton of talent and familiar players after last season’s 10-2 campaign. A lot of new players are stepping into key roles. The youth showed in a 27-7 preseason game loss to James Clemens on Thursday night at Ogle Stadium.

Despite the loss, Decatur senior linebacker Josh Marsh was not the least bit discouraged.

“We got a great group of young guys, and it was great to see them have the opportunity to get used to the speed of the game,” the Auburn commitment said. “You can only do so much in practice. It was great for the returning players to get back to the speed of the game.”

Last season, Decatur was an offense-dominated team that carried a young defense. The losses on offense included All-State running back LaDarius Woods, who set a school record with 2,175 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. He finished with 2,299 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns.

Quarterback Alec Marks passed for 1,626 yards and 17 touchdowns. John Riehl was the leading receiver with 752 yards and seven touchdowns. Offensive linemen Cedric Pointer and Dakota McNutt led the charge up front and paved the way for 4,876 yards rushing.

That’s a lot of offense to replace.

“Yes, we’re young on offense, and our defense is going to have to carry the load early in the season,” Marsh said. “We’ve got some young guys that are going to be good. I’m really excited to see how our season goes.”

Decatur’s only score of the night came on a 79-yard run by senior Collin Smiley. At 5-foot-9, 159-pounds, he does not run with the power of someone like Woods, who ran through defenders. Smiley showed he can run by them.

Overall, most of the night for the Decatur offense was one good play followed by two not-so-good plays. There weren’t a lot of first downs.

Give James Clemens a lot of credit. The Class 7A Jets lost three defenders to the SEC, but they still have talent on both sides of the ball. The Jets suffered a big loss in July when quarterback Jamil Muhammad suffered a season-ending knee injury. That leaves James Clemens with no experience at quarterback.

“The biggest thing I saw tonight is that we have to learn to trust ourselves,” Decatur coach Jere Adcock said. “We didn’t tackle well, and we didn’t hold our blocks. Those are two things that we can fix.

“Overall, it was great for us to get to play a good team tonight. We’re tired of practice. We’re ready to get the season started.”

Decatur opens the season next Friday vs. Huntsville. The game at Milton Frank Stadium will be the 88th meeting in the Red Raiders’ oldest rivalry. Decatur leads the series 51-30-6. The Red Raiders won last year’s meeting, 42-20.

New Auburn commit Asa Martin, Austin face Jasper tonight (AL.com)
quote:

If defenses looked worn out against Austin this season, there’s good reason.

The Black Bears possess arguably the best backfield in the state with the tandem of four-star Auburn commitment Asa Martin and returning 1,500-yard rusher Antonio Robinson.

Martin, the state’s top-rated running back, ran for 1,374 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2015, then spent last season at Florida powerhouse IMG Academy. The 6-foot, 200-pound Martin returned to Decatur for his final season and will team with Robinson, who tallied 1,597 yards and 22 touchdowns last season as Austin made its second consecutive trip to the Class 6A semifinals. Robinson (5-11, 180) counts Memphis and Coastal Carolina among his offers.

Black Bears coach Jeremy Perkins doesn’t expect any drama when it comes to sharing carries.

“It’s great. The more the merrier, so to speak,” he said. “Defenses can’t focus on one guy. It makes the other guy even better because they get less attention. It gives everybody more opportunities, if that makes sense. To have more than one guy, who on score on any given play, is great. It’s going to stretch defenses a little bit more.”

In addition to Martin and Robinson forming a 1-2 punch, quarterback Paxton Montgomery returns and the offensive line features FBS prospect Marquice Robinson (6-4, 315). Add in a defense that includes four-star junior cornerback Reddy Steward and its easy to understand why expectations are so high for Austin.

“Although we haven’t played our first game yet, I think we have a really good chance to go win it all,” Martin said. “That’s our goal. We know we’ve got to take it one game at a time.”

Fourth-ranked Austin gets its first test against Jasper, the former Walker High, tonight in Decatur. Kickoff is set for 7 at Ogle Stadium.

“It’s a feeling that I’ve been waiting on for a long time; just being out there under the lights at Ogle,” Martin said. “I’m enjoying being around my friends that I grew up with since sixth grade. It’s going to be a pretty good experience.”

Walker defeated Austin 14-10 last season behind Michael Crear’s two first-half touchdown passes and a Vikings defensive stop inside the 10 yard line in the final minute of the game. Crear is back for his junior season, but the player on the receiving end of both TDs – Isaiah Cox – graduated.

JASPER (4-6) AT AUSTIN (10-4)
Series history: Austin leads 4-3
2016 scoring offense: Austin 28.3; Jasper 25.7
2016 scoring defense: Austin 22.0; Jasper 24.8
Austin at home in 2016: 6-1
Jasper on the road in 2016: 2-3

Surprised the Robinson kid isn't getting more attention. He's a solid player too. That's a loaded backfield

Hoover football's latest out-of-state challenge? Grayson of Georgia (AL.com)
quote:

Hoover thrived last season in the state of Alabama, winning every matchup against in-state opponents - all the way to the Class 7A state title game. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers lost both of their games against out-of-state opponents: a home game to Grayson (36-14) and a road game against Allen of Texas (25-7).

On Friday, Hoover has a chance to earn some football revenge. The Bucs travel to Grayson in a season opener for both nationally-ranked teams.

What do the Bucs want to do differently?

Let’s start on special teams. In 2016, Hoover miscues on special teams gave Grayson great field position, leading to easy scores. It started with an errand Hoover snap on a punt and continued with a muffed punt. Both plays led to fourth-quarter touchdowns for Grayson.

What’s different for Hoover?

The Buccaneers are in a better position to score fast. Or big. While coach Josh Niblett is committed to running the football, a hallmark of the program, receivers Shedrick Jackson, George Pickens and others offer big-play options.

Grayson graduated most of its starters from last season’s 14-1 team. But Hoover can expect to face a new crop of highly-rated college prospects, including Owen Pappoe, the nation’s No. 1-ranked outside linebacker in the Class of 2019.

Can Pappoe interrupt the timing of Hoover’s passing game, while helping Grayson take control of the line of scrimmage? Or will Hoover’s offensive line move the pile forward, and the Bucs utilize its special teams standouts Barret Pickering and Will Reichard?

Grayson is young, having graduated most of the starters from last season’s 14-1 team. But this year’s team is also talented. Pappoe, offensive lineman Wanya Morris, linebacker Kevin Harris, safety Kenyatta Watson II, running back Ronald Thompkins and defensive linemen Tru Thompson and Trente Jones are ranked in the Top 50 of 247Sports composite rankings for Georgia’s Class of 2019.

I wish instead of signing so many 5' 8" to 5' 10" wr/rb hybrid guys, who really don't have a position except the "he will be great on the speed sweep," until he transfers or rarely plays, especially since we seem to finally recruit true wr nowadays, we would sign an extra D lineman or two. Give me one or two of those guys that end up at Ark or Miss St. even if they are 3*.

Do we even run the speed sweep anymore?

Welcome back to Alabama High School football Mr. Asa!

I wonder if he caught any passes. He supposedly has the best hands in the nation and as good as most WRs in the class.

I know Jackson had a 51 yard catch but haven't seen full stats either. Surprised that one wasn't on TV, or if it was I missed it.

Both had over 100 yards per Keith.

FWIW Jason Caldwell covered Justin Fields last night. He would not have gone there if he did not think AU had a very real shot at JF. JF had 2 TD passes & a TD rush versus a much more talented Rome team that included 3 SEC committed D Linemen. JF also had 2 other TDs called back due to penalty.

Piecing Keith's individual posts together Shed Jackson had at least 5 catches for 148 yard. Pickens had at least 6 catches for 101 yards.

I am in the minority, but I won't be rustled if we miss on JF and get Nix.

If we miss on Fields we may miss on Nix too since missing on Fields could mean 8 wins or worse and a new staff. If we have a new staff our chances with Nix go down quite a bit.

Why would missing on Fields mean only 8 wins? How many yards do you expect Fields to throw for Auburn this year?
