With how they are ignoring the state, it is plausible. It is weird. The State of AL is what kick started Saban, and now he is moving on. That's what Tubs did.

I wouldn't say they are ignoring it but I do agree that they are recruiting more nationally. Still they signed 6 of the top 10 guys last cycle and we haven't ever signed the top guy in state as long as Saban has been there. Miller, Ross & Williams all landing at AU is EXTREMELY optimistic but hey it's February, best time to be really optimistic

Of the top 5 in state I want Armour-Davis the most. We typically don't get big time CBs so having one instate that isn't an automatic Bama lean could be big. After that hope we split Miller & Ross

Bama is more selective of the state recruits. Wouldn't call it ignoring the state either.

Yea, they have that luxury.

Tubbs on the other hand got tired of the work involved to still steal kids in-state, when he could go get a 3* south florida kid to commit a year in advance.

I think it rubs HS coaches the wrong way. It's a quick way to burn bridges if you're not careful

I don't disagree, I also just don't see that ever being a problem for Bama regardless.

Asa Martin
Tae Provens
Harold Joiner
Shivers

How does this shake out?

Any chance any of these guys (Joiner) can play another position? It seems like we have a good shot at all of them but we obviously aren't going to take 4 RBs.

KN has already CB's Joiner and Martin to AU and Shivers obviously committed but a lot of folks here seem to think Provens is legit.

Thoughts?

Jacob Copeland’s longtime friendship with Auburn commit Joey Gatewood will assist Tigers (SECCountry)
quote:

Scan Jacob Copeland‘s Twitter account and you’ll like what you see — if you’re an Auburn fan, at least.

Copeland, a 4-star receiver from Pensacola, Fla., is the No. 68 overall prospect in the country. He’s the 11th-ranked wide receiver. As far as Auburn’s wish list goes, Copeland is at or near the top. The Tigers have been after him for a few years now, and that priority treatment carried over as Auburn transitioned full-time into the 2018 cycle.

Auburn showed its preference when, prior to the end of 2017 recruiting, Kodi Burns made two trips to Pine Forest High on the Florida panhandle to see the 2018 wide receiver prospect. Copeland got more 1-on-1 time with Burns during the program’s January junior day.

Every time its Burns and Copeland, it’s a good time.

“It’s always good talking with coach Burns. He’s a cool dude, man,” Copeland said. “He speaks it real to me, how everything would be set up if I were to come here. Coach Burns, he cleared everything up.”

quote:

Every time Copeland posts something pro-Auburn, the first person to respond is Auburn quarterback commit Joey Gatewood.

“We communicate all the time,” Copeland said.

Copeland and Gatewood haven’t formed a superficial recruiting relationship, either. The pair has known each other since they were sophomores. Copeland and Gatewood have played together on a 7-on-7 football team, though Gatewood’s schedule usually made it tough to play in tournaments.

That’s likely to change this season when Gatewood travels around the state with Copeland & Co. Copeland will see first-hand what it’s like to catch passes from Gatewood against competition.

Copeland also knows he will receive a strong Auburn pitch the entire time. But it’s one he can trust fully.

“Just by listening to Joey, I know he’s not going to tell me no false information. He’s going get to it straight. A lot of players would want you to go with them just to join, but I know Joey better than that,” Copeland said. “I know he’s going to give me straight information.”

Auburn's top running back targets in 2018 class (AL.com)
quote:

AUBURN'S TOP RUNNING BACK TARGET

Lorenzo Lingard (6-foot-1, 191 pounds, Orange City, Fla.)

The five-star Florida native committed to Miami last week, but we don't expect Auburn to throw in the towel any time soon. Plenty can happen from now until National Signing Day 2018. Lingard is a 2018 U.S. Army All-American and ranked as the nation's No. 2 running back and No. 15 overall player in the 247Sports Composite. He rushed for 1,418 yards and 22 touchdowns last fall.

2 MORE TO WATCH

Asa Martin (6 feet, 193 pounds, Decatur, Ala.)

Auburn offered Martin last week, and the four-star prospect called it "the one I've been waiting for." He rushed for 1,374 yards and 12 touchdown as a sophomore at Austin before leaving for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He tallied 607 yards last season (372 rushing, 235 receiving) and four rushing scores. He has returned to Austin for his upcoming senior season. Martin is has 17 offers expected to be an early enrollee.

Dameon Pierce (5-foot-11, 205 pounds, Bainbridge, Ga.)

The four-star prospect committed to Alabama last July, so the Tigers have some work to do if they want to flip him. He is the nation's No. 6 running back.

IN-STATE GLANCE

There are two more in-state running backs to keep an eye on other than Martin. Auburn offered Madison County standout Tae Provens (6 feet, 190 pounds) last June and he recently told 247Sports the Tigers will be "in it until the end." He has a good relationship with Auburn running backs coach Tim Horton, but LSU, Tennessee and Ole Miss are also factors.

In addition to Provens, Auburn is also recruiting Harold Joiner (6-foot-3, 218 pounds) of Mountain Brook. The 6-foot-3, 218-pounder prefers running back but could potentially move to other positions at the next level. Provens and Joiner are both three-star prospects.

Ryan Bartow has VIP update on Tampa targets that have some AU interest

- 4* OT Richard Gouraige lists Clemson as his leader but also has high interest in AU, UNC and UF. He plans on visiting all three over this summer and making decision after official visits

- 4* OT Nicholas Petit-Frere is really high on Gators after recent visit but also has interest and hears from Bama, Michigan, Clemson, Auburn & others. Claims he's wide open and I think AU will get visit

Would love to land either of these guys

I think we take 2 of the 3 instate guys. I would prefer Joiner and Provens but any of them work for me. We might use the "athlete" pitch to recruit all four but I think we would have to lose some guys to NFL or transfer in order to take em all but that's a guess

Auburn's top defensive line targets in 2018 class (AL.com)
quote:

AUBURN'S TOP DEFENSIVE LINE TARGET

Xavier Thomas (6-foot-2, 249 pounds, Bradenton, Fla.)

Thomas is on college program wish lists across the country as the nation's No. 2 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite. Clemson appears to be in the driver's seat for the consensus five-star. Auburn could be a factor if the Tigers secure a visit.

4 MORE TO WATCH

Coynis Miller (6-foot-4, 270 pounds, Birmingham, Ala.)

Miller has become a regular visitor to Auburn, but Alabama is also in hot pursuit of the defensive tackle. He is a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 24 defensive tackle. Miller is the former teammate of linebacker T.D. Moultry, who signed with Auburn earlier this month.

D'Andre Litaker (6-foot-3, 290 pounds, Murfreesboro, Tenn.)

Auburn is in the mix for the four-star defensive tackle, though Tennessee is considered the front-runner at this time. He is ranked as the nation's No. 18 defensive tackle.

Nik Bonitto (6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)

Bonitto is a four-star prospect and the No. 4 weak-side defensive end. He also plays basketball and holds hoops offers from Wake Forest and Florida, among others.

Brenton Cox (6-foot-4, 235 pounds, Stockbridge, Ga.)

Georgia is currently the team to beat for Cox's commitment. He is a four-star prospect and the No. 4 strong-side defensive end.

IN-STATE GLANCE

Andres Fox (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) is quickly gaining attention after racking up 18 sacks last season at Mobile Christian. He recently told 247Sports the Tigers are in his top three with Mississippi State and Penn State.

Elsewhere in the Yellowhammer State, Ka'darian Hill (6 feet, 263 pounds) of Eufaula is one prospect Auburn fans should keep an eye on. He holds 10 offers in addition to Auburn, including Georgia Tech, Memphis and UAB. Both Fox and Hill are three-star prospects.

Alabama, Auburn vying for spot in 4-star St. Paul's DB Jalyn Armour-Davis' top five (AL.com)
quote:

Alabama and Auburn are in hot pursuit for the state's top defensive prospect, but St. Paul's cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis may only have one of the two in his top five.

Armour-Davis, a four-star recruit ranked as the No. 2 player in Alabama via the 247Sports composite, has several top schools vying for his services.

He says he's weighing his options now, but hopes to have a top five by the summer or August.

"I will most likely only have one of the two in my top five," Armour-Davis said.

Good luck figuring out which one of the two will be in his top five, as Armour-Davis is keeping things close to the vest for now.

quote:

ALABAMA: "The success that I know I would have on and off the field. I know I would gain a lot of experience and grow every day with competition at practice and almost every Saturday."

AUBURN: "I really enjoy the coaches there, and I feel like we have a good connection. It creates a good vibe for me when I go to Auburn. Auburn feels like a family and a home."

Would be shocked if we weren't in his top 5

Four-Star RB Kirby Bennett Will Visit USC Monday, Planning Official Visit to UCLA
quote:

Kirby Bennett is the top rated running back in the West and has a lot of ability.

He's a powerful downhill runner who can run between the tackles but has enough speed to bounce it outside as well.

He's a physical back who can wear down a defense and projects as the type of back who can be a 25+ carry a game back that is built for the pounding all backs take in college. He showed at the Adidas 7v7 Tournament on Saturday that he can be very affective out of the backfield as well and has very good hands.

On the recruiting front, Bennett will visit USC on Monday and is hopeful the Trojans will be the latest program to offer. The Auburn Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs and Washington Huskies are other schools that could get visits this spring/summer and UCLA is the one school Bennett said he knows he'll officially visit.

Nike Football The Opening Orlando Regional Primer (247)
quote:

DAVENPORT, Fla. – Led by the nation’s No. 2 recruit Xavier Thomas, many of America’s elite high school football prospects will take the field for Sunday’s Nike Football The Opening Orlando Regional.

This is the second stop on the nationwide tour for The Opening Regional series.

The 6-foot-2 ½, 249-pound Thomas was one of just a handful of underclassmen that earned an invite to The Opening finals last year. Looking to earn his second Golden Ticket to participate in this year’s finals, which are held every year in July at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., the Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy standout will arrive strongly considering offers from Clemson and South Carolina among others.

Eight more prospects competing rank inside the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Top50 in Miami running back commit Lorenzo Lingard, the nation’s No. 2 safety Tyreke Johnson (considering Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame and UCLA among others), the No. 2 all-purpose back in the land T.J. Pledger (high on several including Nebraska, Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame and USC), Penn State quarterback commit Justin Fields, America’s No. 5 receiver Brian Hightower (Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, UCLA and USC are top schools), the No. 6 cornerback Brendan Radley-Hiles (Nebraska, Notre Dame and UCLA are a few), the top-ranked athlete in Florida State commit Justin Watkins and the No. 4 offensive tackle in the country in Richard Gouraige (Clemson, Florida and Florida State).

There’s an elite group of 2019 prospects competing as well led by top-ranked running back Noah Cain (LSU, Miami, Oklahoma), No. 1 athlete and Alabama commit Trey Sanders, the No. 2 safety and Florida verbal Jaleel McRae, the No. 5 and No. 6 receivers in Cameron Coleman and Maurice Goolsby, America’s No. 5 safety in Brendan Gant (Florida State is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite) and the No. 4 weak-side defensive end in Nolan Smith.

Joining Fields in the quarterback group will be Auburn commit Joey Gatewood and Top247 passer Artur Sitkowski (Florida, Miami, South Carolina, Rutgers) among others. Florida State running back commit Charles Strong is another headliner in the backfield.

There will be several more high-profile receivers on the field including Top247 recruits in Joshua Moore (Texas is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite), Warren Thompson (Florida, Florida State, Miami) and C.J. Smith (Alabama, LSU, Michigan and Oklahoma). Florida commit Jalynn Williams and Louisville pledge Zion Roland are also part of the group.

Florida is considered a heavy favorite to land two of the top offensive linemen slated to compete in the nation’s No. 8 offensive guard Cleveland Reed and No. 10 offensive tackle William Barnes. A couple other Top247 recruits include offensive tackle Reuben Unije (Alabama, Florida, N.C. State) and offensive guard Curtis Dunlap (Oklahoma leads on the 247Sports Crystal Ball).

Looking to battle those guys on the other side of the ball will be Top247 defensive end Stacy Kirby (Florida State and Miami among others), Top247 defensive tackle TK Chimedza (Florida State, Georgia and Georgia Tech) and four-star defensive end Jonathan King (Florida is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite).

Clemson commit Mike Jones Jr. is one of the most ballyhooed linebackers on the field.

Other touted recruits in the secondary include Top247 safety Amari Burney (another Florida leads for on the Crystal Ball), Top247 cornerback and Florida State commit Isaiah Bolden, four-star cornerback Ken Montgomery Jr. and Virginia Tech safety commit Chamarri Conner.

Three more underclassmen arrive committed to high-profile schools in 2019 defensive tackle Jaquaze Sorrells to Florida, 2019 linebacker Jesiah Pierre to Miami and 2020 athlete Avantae Williams to Miami.

Stay tuned to 247Sports for updates from the event as more names will certainly emerge.

Hoping Gatewood has strong showing to get bumped back up down the road in the ratings
