But even last year, our offense looked considerably better with KP running the ball than with a healthy KJ.
We had also opened up the offense a little bit for SW and had HIM healthy.

Informed today Fields is going to Florida this weekend now instead because our coaches are out of town. BOOOOOO cancel those trips baws

WTF! Our coaches gotta do better than that. You have an elite QB wanting to come visit and you skip town? Cmon Gus - earn that paycheck of yours!

what would Malzahn's offense had looked like had we signed a guy like Leonard Fournette?
Not all that different than last year with Pettway. Maybe a couple long runs go the distance instead of chased down, but that's about it for difference.

This:
Doesn't rationally go with this:
We're the only goddam team that's put up a reasonable fight against Bama for the last 8 years.
But, no, of course you're right... we're doomed. AS USUAL.

Could have picked shite running backs and hit 1k yards a few of those years. That's what running 70% of the time gets you.
2009 Ben Tate - 5.2 ypc
2010 Michael Dyer - 6.0 ypc
2011 Michael Dyer - 5.1 ypc
2012 Tre Mason - 5.9 ypc (not a Malzahn offense)
2013 Tre Mason - 5.7 ypc
2014 Cameron Artis-Payne - 5.3 ypc
2015 Peyton Barber - 4.3 ypc
2016 Kamryn Pettway - 5.9 ypc
Are all these guys getting 5+ ypc (save Barber) only because we run the ball a lot? In general, running the ball MORE brings your average down closer to the mean. That being the case, if the only reason we're getting 1000 yard rushers is because we run the ball a lot, why do our backs average 5+ yards a pop?
Edit: shite, I could have just read one more post and seen that GenesChin already covered this.

Gatewood at The Opening regional in Charlotte today. It's loaded with QB talent including Trevor Lawrence. Stampini says Gatewood looks much improved from Orlando. Jarren Williams also there and apparently looked sharpest early
Good to hear improvement on Gatewood. Honestly think he just needs to actually spend time playing position more than anything else

Catching up on some updates today...
Few days ago KN has VIP up on Daquan Newkirk. Newkirk claims he is still 100% committed to Auburn and apparently the staff is very high on him. Feels confident he will be able to enroll in December. Apparently Garner went and watched his spring game where he was playing nose guard and had a good day. He's expected to play end for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College this year but could grow in to a DT prospect for AU. Sounds like we haven't been recruiting him real hard but might be picking it up some especially with more teams starting to show interest in him such as UGA. Though Newkirk claims only way he would decommit is if Garner literally stopped recruiting him which KN says isn't going to happen
Fascinated to see how he does this year in JUCO

KN also had VIP insider up on 4* WR Matthew Hill. It sounds like he could be close to committing to AU. He supposedly is going to narrow his list after his spring game on May 19th but KN thinks there's a chance he could commit pretty soon after that. Hill also claims he wants to commit by June or July possibly before then. Unfortunately he won't make Big Cat Weekend because he will be at an Under Armour event in Maryland that day. South Carolina & FSU are the biggest threats to AU
Posted on 5/7/17 at 2:19 pm to TigerPaw1
Another insider was on 5* OT Calvin Ashley and when he plans on getting to AU. Ashley graduated this past week which is big news especially considering all his transfers in high school there was some questions (by KN & outside ppl not coaching staff) on how his grades were. Ashely will also be enrolling earlier than the other recruits. Most will be here at end of May, Ashley will be on campus May 16th. KN also pointed out he has changed Twitter handle to include 71 so that might be his number at AU which means Braden Smith might be changing numbers but KN has not further info on that
I am very interested to see what Ashley does this fall camp. He was a beast run blocker at guard in the Under Armour All American game but was ok as a pass blocker in the 1v1 drills

Best Bets to join the 2018 class (247)
quote:
With six commitments and about 16-17 spots (our best guess) left to fill for 2018, there is much work ahead for the Auburn Tigers.
Today, we take a look at the best bets at each position to join the class.
These aren’t stone-cold predictions — just the players position-by-position we think Auburn has the greatest shot of landing as of today. No matter how many spots need to be filled at a given position, we only selected one player for this feature.
Some of our "Best Bets" are hard leans to Auburn.
Some are not. In fact, a player just might be the most likely to join the class at this time because things haven't yet come into focus at a given spot.
Sometimes picking one player at a position is hard because Auburn is in good shape with multiple recruits.
Sometimes it's hard becase they lead with none.
One other thing: Because recruiting is such a fluid thing, we expect this to change greatly from month to month -- just as our class predictions do.
In any event, this is really just for fun.
Without further ado, introducing the first installment of Best Bets ...

QUARTERBACK
SPOTS TO FILL: 1
BEST BET: Justin Fields
411: Why would we pick Fields, a 5-star Penn State commit who seems to have Auburn in no better than the No. 3 spot? Well, it's a tough call here to be frank -- and here's why: With a new offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach -- and a second quarterback spot only recently opening up with the transfer of Tyler Queen -- Auburn is still evaluating prospects and trying to sort things out. Florida looks like the biggest threat to Penn State, but Auburn has gotten good vibes from Fields and the Tigers think they're in it. As the Tigers see more quarterbacks this spring, things will become more clear at quarterback. But for now, Fields seems like the best bet.
OTHERS OF NOTE: Gerry Bohanon, Jarren Williams (no offer yet)

RUNNING BACK
SPOTS TO FILL: 1-2
BEST BET: Asa Martin
411: It's a Florida-Auburn battle with Alabama also emerging. The Gators really like where they sit and have reason to feel confident, but the Tigers are very much in the hunt. Based on our intel, Auburn's chances may depend greatly on how much of a push it makes. As of today, we expect Martin to make at least two more visits to Auburn before he makes any type of decision. Whether Auburn lands Martin or not, our sources lead us to believe the Tigers are going to do well at this position. As for Martin, there is no doubt he likes the Gators a lot. Also, that recent Alabama offer got his attention. For Auburn, Master Teague might be someone else to watch. But for now, Martin seems like the best bet.
OTHERS OF NOTE: Harold Joiner, Dameon Pierce and Master Teague

RECEIVER
SPOTS TO FILL: 2-3
BEST BET: Matthew Hill
411: Shedrick Jackson would seem like the obvious choice. Auburn recently offered and he is the nephew of Tigers legend Bo Jackson. That made this a tough call. But we went with Hill in this edition. Although Hill hasn't named a leader or leaders, Auburn is trending up and appears to be in solid position. Hill could have a decision by the early part of the summer. He's a major Tigers target who grew up an Auburn fans. Meantime, we also really like Auburn's chances with Jackson. But for now, Hill seems like the best bet.
OTHERS OF NOTE: Shedrick Jackson, Justyn Ross, Seth Williams

TIGHT END
SPOTS TO FILL: 1
BEST BET: Zach Sheffer
411: Not that long ago, we didn't know much about this recruitment -- or even how much Auburn liked him. He was after all, offered by Auburn's former tight ends coach, Scott Fountain, not its new one, Larry Porter. But Porter visited Sheffer last week and now Sheffer plans to visit Auburn this summer. He likes the Tigers a lot, but wants to learn more about how much he'd be thrown to in Chip Lindsey's offense. He admitted Auburn's tight end production in recent seasons was a concern. But now, Sheffer seems like the best bet.
OTHERS OF NOTE: Tyneil Hopper
Posted on 5/7/17 at 2:37 pm to TigerPaw1

OFFENSIVE LINE
SPOTS TO FILL: 2-3
BEST BET: Dylan Wonnum
411: This was an extremely difficult call. The Tigers are involved with a bunch of linemen, but it has been hard to get a read on many of them. With some, Auburn doesn't lead but is in the ball game. The Tigers love William Barnes and Richard Gouraige of Florida, but probably are second to the Gators for both. Meantime, Wonnum seems fairly open -- and he's close friends with Auburn guard/center commit Jalil Irvin. What's more, the Tigers are a top contender for his teammate, linebacker Michael Harris. In truth, we're not confident with this pick. But for now, Wonnum seems like the best bet.
OTHERS OF NOTE: Christian Armstrong, William Barnes, John Campbell, Jerome Carvin, Richard Gouraige, Nicholas Petit-Frere
Didn't realize Wonnum and Harris are teammates. That could be interesting to follow as well

DEFENSIVE END AND/OR BUCK
SPOTS TO FILL: 2
BEST BET: Andres Fox
411: Fox has a top three of Auburn, Alabama and LSU. Auburn sent two coaches to see him Monday -- and he is close with the Tigers staff. According to Fox, he nearly committed to Auburn earlier this year before family encouraged him to pump the brakes. Alabama and LSU remain viable threats. But for now, Fox seems like the best bet.
OTHERS OF NOTE: Richard Jibunor, Azeez Ojulari, Caleb Tannor,

DEFENSIVE TACKLE
SPOTS TO FILL: 1
BEST BET: Coynis Miller
411: Auburn continues to evaluate tackles and new names are likely to emerge in the coming months. Meanwhile, Miller will be no easy get. Even though Auburn was in on him very early, Alabama and other heavyweights have gotten involved and Miller will give many a good look. At day's end, we think it's likely to be the Tigers or the Tide. Working in Auburn's favor: He's close with the staff, he's visited the Tigers more than anyone and his former teammate, Tadarian Moultry, is an Auburn signee. Working against Auburn: He grew up an Alabama fan and the Tide also has made him a priority. This could go either way and many think he's Alabama's to lose. But for now, Miller seems like the best bet.
OTHERS OF NOTE: TBD
Posted on 5/7/17 at 2:38 pm to TigerPaw1
quote:
LINEBACKER
SPOTS TO FILL: 2
BEST BET: Zakoby McClain
411: Auburn is McClain's public leader. That's especially positive news for the Tigers since he has only visited them once. Future visits very well could pad that lead. Auburn, though, continues to aggressively recruit other linebackers and with limited spots available this could be a first-two-in-the-boat kind of deal. But for now, McClain seems like the best bet.
OTHERS OF NOTE: Michael Harris, JJ Peterson, Channing Tindall, Quay Walker, Nathaniel Watson
