UGA just offered Harold Joiner. Curious to see if they gonna take the LSU approach and sell him on being only a RB or if they will use ATH approach as well

Auburn targets Master Teague III, Myles Mason talk Tigers at Michael Vick recruiting camp (SECCountry)
quote:

Over the weekend, some of the Southeast’s top talent congregated in Nashville for one of Michael Vick’s regional camps.

South Carolina recruiting reporter Hale McGranahan represented SEC Country at the event and spoke with a pair of Auburn targets on my behalf. Those two prospects were 4-star running back Master Teague III and 4-star defensive back Myles Mason.

Both are high on Auburn’s wish list, and each of them consider the Tigers among their favorite programs.

Here’s the latest from Teague and Mason:

Master Teague starting to separate schools

The 4-star running back has made his rounds.

Teague has been busy this spring taking recruiting visits to many of his top schools of interest. He dropped a top 12 that included eight programs that had offered and four schools — Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Ohio State — that could remain in the conversation despite no offer, though none of those schools have changed their stances yet.

Since his March 19 release, Teague has taken visits to Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, Tennessee and Georgia. South Carolina hasn’t hosted Teague since the season opener last football season, but the Gamecocks still are considered one of the front-runners for Teague.

On Sunday, Teague confirmed that his list has been reduced from 12, but he opted not to make any official statements on which schools made the cut and those that didn’t. It’s fair to assume that the offering programs he’s visited recently — Tennessee, Auburn and Georgia — are major contenders.

“We already answered most of the questions about the schools and stuff like that,” Teague said. “Now we’re kind of reading and praying, just trying to listen for God, to where he would have me be at. Just kind of listening and praying, hoping that we’ll find the right place for me, where I can grow as a person and fulfill God’s will.”

Teague’s initial comment on “answering questions” follows a similar talking point he referenced after his first Auburn visit in February.

He had all of those questions and concerns figured out with Auburn then. The most recent visit in March was more about learning fit and establishing a stronger relationship with a coaching staff that he considers one of his closest bonds in the country.

Many names have been mentioned in regards to Auburn running back recruiting: Shaun Shivers, Asa Martin, Harold Joiner and Tae Provens, but Teague is sometimes lost in the out-of-state shuffle.

That isn’t the case with Auburn’s coaching staff. It was on that most recent visit to Auburn that he began to feel prioritized by the Tigers compared with some other staffs.

“It was my second time visiting, and they enjoyed having me there. Coach [Tim] Horton and coach [Gus] Malzahn like me a lot. They think I have great character and would be a great fit for them. They’re really recruiting me pretty hard, and Coach Horton really wants to coach me. They’re not pressuring anything on me right now. They’re just letting me take my time, but they’re really excited about me,” Teague said. “They want me to be an Auburn Tiger.”

Now that he feels comfortable with Auburn, Teague has started to look for other factors to help him differentiate one top school from another.

His natural next move: scheme fit.

The way programs use the running back helped Teague eliminate programs early on. It also showed him on his visit tour how some schools might make more sense than others. But as Teague prepares for his senior season, there’s one offense that makes him feel comfortable.

“Auburn’s [offense] is more like how I run my offense now, how the offense is run at Blackman [High School]. I think, if I went there, it would be a really easy transition, as far as how they run the power and things like that,” Teague said. “I think it is a part [of my decision] because I feel like certain schools use their backs in different ways. I prefer some more than others. Certain schools, I didn’t like the way they ran their backfield, so I didn’t really have them up there on the list, like the ones I have, so I think it does play a big role.”

I honestly have no idea who we sign at RB this cycle. Harold Joiner, Asa Martin, Master Teague, Dameon Pierce, Tae Provens could all end up in the class or could all go elsewhere. Will be curious to see which RBs make it to BCW next month

Myles Mason feels like priority at Auburn

The 4-star cornerback from Pleasant Grove (Ala.) downplays the Iron Bowl recruiting battle.

When asked how tough it would be for an out-of-state school to swoop in: “It wouldn’t be hard,” Mason said. “But I don’t plan on going nowhere far.”

The reality is that neither Auburn nor Alabama will let Mason leave the state. The question remains, however, whether the Crimson Tide are going to make a major push. All 11 Crystal Ball selections for Mason favor Alabama, but it remains to be seen if the Crimson Tide will make an extended effort to add Mason in the class.

That question doesn’t linger with Auburn.

“I feel like a priority a lot,” Mason said. “They’re basically saying that they need me.”

In many senses, that’s true.

Auburn lacks depth at safety in 2017, and that only figures to get worse following the season. Mason is listed as the No. 252 overall prospect and No. 22 safety, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. The Tigers need to add multiple pieces at safety in the 2018 recruiting class, and there is no better place to start than the Birmingham-area prospect.

Auburn has made that point clear.

“They’re telling me that I have a great opportunity to come in and play early,” Mason said. “They’re losing safeties this year, so they’re telling me I have a great opportunity to come in. That’s important.”

He wants to make a decision by this summer.

For now, he doesn’t have any set-in-stone plans to return to Auburn. But he wants to get back before a final decision to continue building on his newfound relationship with Auburn defensive backs coach Greg Brown.

So far?

“It’s been great. His experience in the NFL, it speaks for itself,” Mason said.

In a weird way we should be hoping Bama finds a highly ranked national guy because it will probably mean we land Mason. It seems their national approach really helped us gain ground on guys this cycle but gonna have to actually close on them for it to really matter

Auburn’s best options for a second QB to join Joey Gatewood in Class of 2018 (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn made a public statement over the weekend in regard to its 2018 recruiting class.

The Tigers offered 5-star Penn State quarterback commit Justin Fields, who is ranked the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the country by the 247Sports composite rankings. Auburn’s offer to Fields answered a longtime question about whether the Tigers would attempt to take more than just Joey Gatewood at quarterback in the 2018 class.

It has been confirmed: Auburn will take two in 2018.

A source close to the program said the decision has been made to take a second quarterback in the class because of the sudden, surprising transfer of Tyler Queen. There is limited depth at quarterback behind Jarrett Stidham and Sean White, especially if Auburn hopes to redshirt Malik Willis.

Despite the decision to take a second, I’ve been told Gatewood is still considered “the guy” and staple of the 2018 class, so this has nothing to do with a lack of confidence in Gatewood, rather a need to strengthen the core group on campus.

What it means for Joey Gatewood

It’s somewhat tough to sell Gatewood as “the guy” when the first offer sent out when deciding to take two quarterbacks goes to a guy like Fields, who is one of the only dual-threat quarterbacks ranked ahead of Gatewood in this class.

But that’s not an issue for Gatewood.

For starters, he’s already used to the trials of a quarterback competition at Bartram Trail (Fla.), which he says has made him a much better quarterback. But this offer to Fields didn’t come as a major surprise to Gatewood, who told SEC Country that he and the staff have communicated for a while about the potential of taking a second quarterback.

When Queen transferred, coaches — specifically Chip Lindsey — conveyed to Gatewood that they’d need to start offering, visiting and evaluating other quarterbacks to bolster the depth at the position.

Moreover, Gatewood said Lindsey is letting him know everything as it pertains to quarterback recruiting. When coaches go visit another quarterback’s high school, they said they’ll let him know. When coaches send out another offer, they said they’ll tell him.

There are no plans to blindside Gatewood. Auburn has been giving him regular updates, so he knew the Fields offer was coming, just as he will be fully aware of any future moves.

Sounds like we are doing what we should and communicating clearly with Gatewood. Would be interesting to see what would happen if we flipped Fields

Auburn’s options going forward

It’s relatively late in the cycle to build new relationships with recruits, especially at the quarterback position.

Auburn did a good job of closing late last class to secure then-Virginia Tech commit Malik Willis, which has turned out to be a fruitful move so far this spring. If Auburn wants to score another top quarterback, however, it’s likely going to stem from relationships the Tigers have built already.

In reference to the Tigers’ remaining quarterback options, here’s our analysis:

5-star Justin Fields, Harrison (Ga.): Fields is the most recent offer. He’s also a hot commodity for other programs such as Georgia, Florida and Florida State. Worth noting, Fields plays quarterback for the Cam Newton 7-on-7 team and grew up a fan of Newton. Still, it’ll be a tough flip for someone who is still committed to Penn State and has been recruited by other rival programs. Fields is keeping his options open, and a visit to Auburn wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest.

5-star Emory Jones, Heard County (Ga.): The Ohio State commit would be another tough pull, but he’s someone who Auburn has recently offered and also hosted a few times. Alabama, Florida and Florida State are others showing interest in Jones. I spoke with someone close to Jones’ recruitment at the Under Armour camp in Atlanta last month who said Auburn is nearly an impossible landing spot because it’s too close to home. He wants to step out of his comfort zone for his next destination.

4-star Gerry Bohanon, Earle (Ark.): It’s still not a sure thing Auburn wants Bohanon as a quarterback. When he left his visit, Bohanon said Auburn — like everyone except Arkansas — is recruiting him as a quarterback. I’ve been told his situation is more like someone who is considered an athlete that will be given a shot at quarterback. Bohanon does have impressive passing numbers that Auburn will continue to evaluate.

3-star Jarren Williams, Central Gwinnett (Ga.): Here’s another offer I could see Auburn extending in the near future, especially if the Tigers feel out of it for Fields and Jones. Williams recently de-committed from Kentucky, thanks to some recruiting pushes from Alabama and Georgia. Auburn visited Williams’ school last week in Atlanta, and he’s another prospect the Tigers will evaluate heavily this spring, fall and summer.

Unranked Cordel Littlejohn, Roswell (Ga.): Littlejohn is a newcomer to the state of Georgia after a 3,654-yard, 50-touchdown junior season in Lincolnton, N.C. He ended up at Roswell, which makes him the heir apparent to Willis’ quarterback throne for the Hornets. His cousin and fellow Roswell player Tyneil Hopper is another Auburn target. On Sunday, Littlejohn won quarterback MVP at a Rivals camp that Fields also attended. Littlejohn has visited Auburn with Hopper a few times this spring. Expect the Tigers to evaluate him in-depth going forward.

I mentioned this guy yesterday, really liked his film. Good shot at ending up a 4* in this class

My personal QB preference from those guys listed above

1.) Justin Fields
2.) Cordel Littlejohn
3.) Jarren Williams
4.) Emory Jones
5.) Gerry Bohanon

I think Jones is a bit overrated but probably won't matter because he ain't coming here. Littlejohn tore it up at recent camp and has some really impressive film. Both him and Williams are pass first dual threat guys which I like. Finally, Bohanon isn't bad it's just I don't trust highly rated QBs from Arkansas anymore

Auburn WR signee JaTarvious Whitlow could end high school career with 11th state title this week (SECCountry)
quote:

LaFAYETTE, Ala. — JaTarvious “Boobie” Whitlow, a member of Auburn football’s incoming 2017 freshman class, is the definition of an athlete.

That’s the position recruiting services gave him during his football career at LaFayette, a Class 2A high school less than 30 minutes from Auburn. And “athlete” describes him perfectly away from the football field, too.

This weekend, Whitlow will compete in the Alabama 2A state track meet in Cullman in four events — triple jump, long jump, 200 meters and 400 meters. He has a great chance to add to his already impressive haul of state championships.

“I’ve got seven right now,” Whitlow told SEC Country on Monday. “I got the long, long, triple, triple, 400, 200. I’ve got six in track, and one in basketball.”

Whitlow will go for the three-peat in both long and triple jumps this weekend. He set the state’s all-time, all-classification record in long jump as a sophomore in 2015. Whitlow added a pair of sprint titles last season and could win more — he came in first at sectionals last weekend in all four of his events.

Whitlow added a state basketball championship at the end of the 2015-16 season. Later that fall, in his senior year, he led LaFayette to the first undefeated football season in program history.

The next time one of the most decorated athletes in the state of Alabama steps onto a football field, it will be as an Auburn Tiger. He enrolls on the Plains later this month as a receiver and potential return specialist after his surprise signing in February.

“Where he’s really going to help Auburn is at slot receiver,” LaFayette head coach James Lucas told SEC Country. “He’s a guy who can take five yards and turn it into 60. … I’ve never seen anything like him. When a kid is in his face, he never takes his eyes off the end zone. He’s got it in his head. ‘I’ve got you beat.’ He never looks at the guy. It’s amazing.”

Whitlow did that plenty of times at LaFayette, stuffing highlight reels with explosive touchdown runs.

As the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback, Whitlow put up astronomical numbers as a senior. He was responsible for 59 touchdowns — 29 passing and 30 rushing — and nearly 4,500 yards of total offense. LaFayette’s lowest point total in the regular season was a whopping 48.

With that speed and breakaway ability, Whitlow is excited about what he could do in Auburn’s offense. The scheme from new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey — who made a last-minute offer to Whitlow as a receiver just before National Signing Day — made quite an impression on Whitlow this spring.

“When I saw at that A-Day Game, man, they were launching it,” Whitlow said. “I said, ‘I think I made the best decision right here.’ I mean, 387 passing yards — 387. You can’t beat that.”

Whitlow will make the transition from quarterback to receiver at Auburn under the guidance of position coach Kodi Burns, who made a similar move during his playing days. He’s coached several former quarterbacks at wide receiver, including current senior John Franklin III.

“It gives me a whole lot of confidence,” Whitlow said. “If [Burns] can do it, I can do it. He did the same thing I did in high school.”

Man I hope we at least replace KJ on kick returns with this kid. I have a feeling this kid is going to be a hell of a steal if he makes it to campus and it sounds like he will

Auburn coach goes to see safety target from New Orleans who has visit planned (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn scouts New Orleans safety

Joe Foucha had an interesting visitor at practice on Monday.

The 3-star safety from McDonogh 35 (La.) went through another day of spring practice with Auburn defensive backs coach Greg Brown roaming the sidelines with a video camera. Brown, in the midst of his first recruiting cycle with the Tigers, was filming Foucha’s practice regimen. Known to be a big film guy, Brown likely wants every piece of evaluation material he can get his hands on.

It also indicates something else. Auburn is showing strong interest in the 33rd-ranked safety in the nation, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

As Foucha puts it, his contact with Auburn is near the top — up there with Arkansas, Notre Dame and Florida.

“The communication has been very good,” Foucha told SEC Country. “When am I coming up? When am I coming to camp? It’s always stuff like that. They just always try to get me to come up. I’d just been keeping in contact and never seen the place, so the conversations have always been, ‘When are you coming up to get the feel of it?’ I’ve always told them I want to keep in touch.”

There have been a few times Foucha has planned to make the trip to Auburn, most recently the January junior day when a few of his McDonogh 35 teammates — including receiver target Lawrence Keys III — made the trip. Foucha wasn’t able to, but not because he didn’t want to.

That’s about to change.

Foucha will visit Auburn on Saturday, which will be his first time on campus despite many previous efforts to do so.

“I’m going up for the 6th, and it’ll be my first time going. I’ve been wanting to go. I’m excited to see the place,” Foucha said. “I want to get a feeling of it. I really just want to see the place because the coaches already have a good vibe.”

In the past, Foucha has referred to Auburn as a “dream school,” stemming from his adolescent fandom of Cam Newton.

That’s one of Foucha’s biggest pieces of excitement when he makes it to Auburn over the weekend. Despite being a safety target, Foucha wants to feel the full Newton experience on his visit and see what life was like for one of his favorite players on the Plains.

“I’m very excited to see where he developed at, some of his years there as a quarterback,” he said.

After this visit, Foucha plans to reduce his top list of schools.

He holds offers from 22 programs, including Auburn, Alabama, Baylor, Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and others. Foucha said it’s Arkansas, Oregon and Kansas that are recruiting him the hardest, but he — especially with Brown’s visit to New Orleans — expects his Auburn contact to pick up after the visit.

From there, he hopes to get down to 10 or fewer schools, a decision he will announce in a little more than two weeks.

“I’m releasing my top [schools] on May 17,” Foucha said. “When I narrow it down, I’ll still be open, but those will be the schools I want to keep in contact with. Get May 17 out of the way, drop the top schools and hopefully it leads to getting a little smaller. … There’s a few schools standing out to me right now.”

Speaking of Auburn targets from Louisiana …

Jammal Houston is from John Ehret High School in Marrero, La.

He’s the 62nd-ranked wide receiver in the nation, which makes him the 368th overall prospect, per the 247Sports composite rankings. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound receiver has offers from 26 programs across the nation and a wide variety of schools.

On Monday evening, Houston elected to trim his options to 12: Arizona, LSU, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Tennessee, Georgia, Arizona State, Auburn, Virginia Tech and Ole Miss.

Auburn has a plethora of options at wide receiver in the 2018 class, so it’s uncertain how much the Tigers will pursue Houston compared to other choices. But wide receiver recruiting going forward will be an interesting thing to track. The Tigers already have Kolbi Fuqua on board, theoretically as a wide receiver.

Then there are Justyn Ross, Seth Williams, Matthew Hill, Kearis Jackson, Shedrick Jackson, Jacob Copeland and potentially others. Auburn’s prioritization of certain receiver prospects in the coming weeks and months will be telling.

Houston, at least, wants Auburn to be a part of the picture.

Don't really think this kid is a target

5-star T.D. Moultry: Auburn’s 2017 LB class aiming for first Butkus winner in program history (SECCountry)
quote:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Auburn football signed one of its best-ever linebacker classes this year. And the trio of T.D. Moultry, K.J. Britt and Chandler Wooten have matched that lofty status with an even loftier goal.

Moultry said the three blue-chippers want to be the first in program history to win the Butkus Award, which is given annually to the nation’s best linebacker.

“We want to start something new,” Moultry told SEC Country. “I think Chandler would say the same thing. K.J. and I both said we want to win a Butkus Award, because no linebacker at Auburn has ever got that award. And there have been some great linebackers there. We want to make history and try to get that.”

Auburn hasn’t had many contenders all-time for the Butkus Award, which was created in 1985. Former Auburn High School star Reuben Foster won the 2016 award at Alabama. The Crimson Tide have had three all-time — Foster, C.J. Mosley (2013) and Derrick Thomas (1988).

Moultry grew up an Alabama fan and pulled for some of the best to play the position in Tuscaloosa. His goal is for Auburn linebackers to reach that level while he’s on the Plains.

“I’m trying to start something new and make my own foundation instead of doing what everybody expected me to do,” Moultry said. “I’m just trying to beat the odds.”

The 5-star Moultry believes the Tigers took a step closer to revitalizing its linebacker tradition last fall. In his first year as linebackers coach, Travis Williams guided a strong unit of mostly inexperienced players — including Deshaun Davis, Tre’ Williams and Darrell Williams.

“I believe in my linebackers coach,” Moultry said. “And their linebackers, they looked like the real deal, especially (Davis) and (Tre’ Williams). They’re looking real good. They believed in themselves.”

Moultry will enroll at Auburn early next month. He’ll begin his Auburn career working at both Money linebacker and the hybrid Buck pass-rushing spot.

The Jackson-Olin (Ala.) product will join with his classmates Britt and Wooten, who enrolled early for spring practices. Wooten made quite an impression on coaches during drills, and Britt picked up plenty of mental reps while sitting out with a knee injury.

All three will be on the field in fall camp, where they’ll begin their friendly competition to become the nation’s best linebacker.

“We’ll be talking and K.J. will say, ‘We’re going to have two runners-up from the same school as the Butkus Award winner,'” Moultry said. “He’ll say, ‘I’ll get it before you.’ And I’ll say, ‘I’ll get it before you.'”

This dude is gonna be a monster. I have a feeling he ends up being a crucial piece to our pass rush this season
