Auburn 5-star offensive line commit Calvin Ashley closes down recruitment (SECCountry)

Calvin Ashley doubled down on his recruitment comment from last week: The 5-star offensive lineman is going to Auburn.
On Tuesday night, Ashley reaffirmed a stance he made last week. He will take no more visits or flirt with other schools. This came a few days after he announced he was “110 percent committed” to the Tigers. All of this was amid rumors of a potential flip to Maryland. Even Auburn had shown some concern with the potential outcome.
It seems all of those concerns have been officially put to rest:

Coming in, it was the 11th-ranked class in the nation, one of the lower rankings for Auburn in the Tommy Tuberville, Gene Chizik and Gus Malzahn eras. It turned out to be the last for Chizik, who separated from Auburn shortly after this recruiting class signed.
There were a few surprise hits in the class — see: Jonathan Jones — but this class was probably known more for its whiffs.
There were some unavoidable disappointments, like Zeke Pike. The class had an unordinary transfer frequency. And there wasn’t a single player that solidified himself as one of the best in America.
Always interesting to go back and look at earlier classes. Forgot about some of those names like Tyler Nero & Darrian Hutcherson

The five-star offensive lineman has been committed to Auburn since before his junior year, but moved to Washington, D.C., to finish his high school career at St. John's College High School.
Maryland jumped into the picture and he took a few visits there, including an official. Rumors even started that Ashley, the Under Armour All-American ranked as the country's No. 30 recruit, would decommit from Auburn.
He squashed those when they came out on Jan. 5. Tuesday, he took things a bit further, tweeting that he wasn't taking any more visits or entertaining any other schools.

KN posted a recruiting insider yesterday, here's summary:
- 4* S Devon Hunter has set a commitment day of January 20th which is the date he was supposed to officially visit AU. Hunter was set to commit to AU at the Army All-American Game until McGriff left and now looks like we are fading fast. KN still doesn't know if Hunter has spoken to Greg Brown but does know that he has talked with Kevin Steele. It's expected AU visits Hunter as soon as contact period begins but it's not looking good right now. Stupid Ole Miss....
- KN has confirmed 3 official visitors this weekend: 3* DL Alec Jackson (who plans to also officially visit Ole Miss & Florida), 3* FB Thomas Johnston (we are not recruiting him as a LB now but as a FB) & 4* OT Kai-Leon Herbert (who is a very soft commit to Michigan with Florida looking like the favorite)
- 4* DE Markaviest Bryant is officially visiting UGA this weekend. If he leaves uncommitted AU's got a shot but there's a chance he could end recruitment this weekend. As of now expected to officially visit January 20th
- Like mentioned yesterday 3* OT George Moore is a recent Washington State decommit that is seeing his stock rise & could visit AU in the future
- 4* DT Cam Spence is a Maryland commit but teammates with Calvin Ashley and might officially visit next weekend with him. Right now though he doesn't have an offer and seems firm to Maryland but we will see. Would be hilarious if after all their confidence in flipping Ashley we instead flipped Spence but probably very little chance of that as of now

About 45 minutes before word began to spread across Twitter on Wednesday night that Auburn offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Rhett Lashlee was leaving for Connecticut, Lashlee broke the news to 2018 Tigers quarterback commit Joey Gatewood of Jacksonville (Fla.) Bartram Trail during a short phone call.
"It's heartbreaking to be honest," Gatewood told AuburnUndercover.com. "He was just telling me a bunch of things. I don't want to get into it."
Gatewood, who committed to Auburn in December of 2015, has considered Lashlee to be a father figure in his life. And, he said Lashlee's presence at Auburn was one of the main reasons he committed to the Tigers.
"Obiviously, I was real close with him," Gatewood said. "He played a huge role in my commitment. I believe in him. It really sucks. I don't know. It really does suck. I don't really have any words for it."
As for his commitment status, Gatewood, the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the 247Sports Composite for 2018, said he was still wrapping his arms around Wednesday's development.
“I don’t know," Gatewood said. "We'll see."

Contact period starts back up today. Herb Hand is expected to visit 3* OT Jordan Tucker. If he offers KN thinks Tucker jumps on board. I doubt we offer just yet unless we have decided he's the guy over the dead period

There are 20 days between the day of this post and National Signing Day. In between, it will be a smorgasbord of in-home coach visits, official visits, last-minute offers, surprise flips, commitment announcements, commitment videos and probably some hurt feelings along the way (looking at fans, mostly).
Throughout the 2017 recruiting cycle, I’ve provided a month-to-month projection of the 2017 class. This January 2017 edition might be the final one barring a potential pre-Signing Day wrap-up. The number Auburn has been shooting for all cycle has been 25. A few projections have shorted that mark. This one will not.
Auburn supporters will be happy to know that zero de-commitments have been projected in this version — unlike Tray Bishop in the last attempt, which turned out to be a worthwhile prediction. There are a couple of academic concerns, but I’ve been given enough confidence about each of the potential additions that all of those borderline qualifiers remain in the class projections.

We average <8 wins/season over the past decade. Since these kids were 8 years old, they were just as likely to see <8 wins than >8 wins.
If we want to start recruiting like a top 5 program, we need to start performing like a top 5 program consistently
