Four-star defensive lineman Ryan Johnson narrows college choices to 6 (AL.com)
quote:
The 6-foot-4, 255-pound senior told AL.com on Wednesday that his finalists - in no particular order - are Alabama, Auburn, Stanford, Texas, Notre Dame and Oregon.
He plans to take official visits to five of the six next month before making his final decision.
"I'm still calm," Johnson said, "but definitely it's exciting to know in the back of my head that in less than a month-and-a-half it will all be over and I will know where I'm going. It's a crazy feeling, but I'm not stressing out over it. Cutting this list down from 50 to 12 and now to 6 ... it's just a blessing to have these opportunities."
quote:
Johnson plans to make his choice prior to National Signing Day on Feb. 1.
"I really am trying to focus on three priorities," he said. "First, I want to make sure it is an environment I'm comfortable in. If something happens and I don't have football, could I still be happy there? Second is obviously education. Right now I'm planning on majoring in engineering and I want to make sure the school I choose has a good curriculum for that. Finally, I want to go somewhere that has potential to win, where the coaches know what they are doing and have been successful and where they will teach me on and off the field."
quote:
Here is what Johnson had to say about each of his six finalists:
Stanford: "I've had my eye on them for a while. I've visited there before and I'm ready to go back so my parents can see it for the first time. I want to get to know the coaches better, spend more time with the players ... just take it all in once again."
Alabama: "I've been there a lot. It's a program that has had tremendous success and is about to have a chance to win another national title. Being around people and coaches who know what they are doing and have had a lot of success doing it - that never gets old."
Auburn: "I've been there many times, too. It just has that home feel to it. I know a lot of players there. I probably have more friends there than anywhere. They were the first school to offer me so of course I want to make sure I take an official visit there."
Oregon: "They didn't have a lot of success this year, but they've been great in the last decade. With a new coach coming in and a lot of good players returning, I feel like they will be back among the top teams in the nation soon."
Texas: "(Former) coach (Charlie) Strong and his staff offered me, then when coach (Tom) Herman was hired that staff re-offered me. They really want me there. They've put a lot of time in getting to know me. The program and school has a great tradition. I'm looking forward to seeing the campus for the first time."
Notre Dame: "It's Notre Dame. I'm not sure a lot of other things need to be said. The coaches have been talking to me and stressing the need for defensive lineman. They had a rough year this year, but I know they will be back on top soon."

Is Auburn close to landing a commitment from Chase Lasater? (AL.com)
quote:
The 6-foot-2, 238-pounder at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla., told AL.com last week the Tigers are in the lead for his commitment.
"As of now Auburn's pretty much at the top of the list, definitely," Lasater said. "I'm not going to say 100 percent because I haven't visited, but I'm loving the feel and the vibe that they give me."
Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand and tight ends coach Scott Fountain visited Lasater earlier this month as his team was preparing for the Class 3A state championship, which Trinity won. Lasater called Hand and Fountain "great coaches and really cool people" and plans to check out the Plains for the first time Jan. 20 for an official visit. While he's in town he plans to check out Auburn's basketball team host rival Alabama.
"I'm beyond excited," Lasater said when asked about the upcoming trip. "Of course the Alabama-Auburn basketball game will be fun, and I'm interested to see the facilities, field, dorm rooms and the campus... I love the way they play. They've had struggles this year but Auburn is an awesome school and I'd love to play there."
Lasater is a former high school teammate of Auburn sophomore defensive end Jeff Holland, who helped the Tigers in their recruiting efforts.
"I talked to Jeff on the sidelines and over text messages," Lasater said. "He talked to Coach Fountain about the way I play and how I'm similar to Chandler Cox, but more physical and faster. I told Jeff to put in a good word for me."
quote:
"Jim Harbaugh, when he offers you up front and sticks his hand out and asks if you want to play for him, you kind of have to say yes," Lasater said. "It was a pressured commitment and in the end I decommitted... It ended up working out for the best because other schools like Auburn jumped in."

5-star OL Calvin Ashley says Auburn commitment 'strong as ever' despite push from Big Ten school (AL.com)
quote:
But it doesn't look like Auburn has anything to worry about.
"My commitment is strong as ever," Ashley said Wednesday after practice for the Under Armour All-America Game. "I committed when I was younger because I love it. Now, I really love it. I got to know the guys better and I know the coaches better."
Ashley will play in Sunday's game in Orlando, which will be televised by ESPN at noon CT. It's a home game for Ashley, who played at Dr. Phillips as a sophomore and The First Academy as a junior.
"It's hot," Ashley said after practice. "In D.C., it's about 15 degrees right now. I'm glad to be home now.
"D.C., the scenery is different, the school is great, got great people there, great coaches, the football is different. I wanted to block different guys."

Under Armour: OL vs. DL - Day 1 (Team Armour)
features Markaviest Bryant who looks ok in the drill. Not as quick as I thought he would be
Under Armour: OL vs. DL - Day 1 (Team Highlight)
Calvin Ashley looks ok. Josh Kaindoh and LaBryan Ray are REALLY good
Under Armour: WR vs. DB - Day 1 (Both Teams)
No AU commits but plenty of guys we will be playing in the coming years

I watched a few practice clips from this morning and this guy was dominating people. He looked mean and quick. They even moved him to OT some
He's a top 10 player but Rivals missed on him early so they keep coming up with excuses for being the ones to have him so low

UA All-America Game: Five predictions on uncommitted prospects (Rivals)
Solid analysis
quote:
4* DE Markaviest Bryant
The skinny: Bryant has been to Alabama and also likes Georgia, LSU and Auburn. Alabama likely won’t have room or will have moved on, so Bryant's recruitment will come down to the Bulldogs and the two Tigers.
Prediction: Auburn. Georgia is where he feels comfort and he likes the hybrid approach the Bulldogs use for defensive ends like him, but many feel Auburn is the team to beat. I’ll go with them.

Well now we know why he considered Maryland. He is going to have fun during fall camp.

First group on OL for Team Highlight appears to be, from left to right, Austin Deculus, Trey Smith, Cesar Ruiz, Calvin Ashley and Jedrick Wills.

From Corey Bender:
Auburn OT commit Calvin Ashley has noticeably trimmed down from the last time I saw him. Quicker feet and more fluid.

Alex Leatherwood stonewalls Markaviest Bryant on back to back reps
- Brian Perronni
quote:
Isaiah Wilson with two really good reps. Moved his feet while to beat Markaviest Bryant twice
- Brian Perroni
quote:
LB Chandler Wooten with nice PBU on a crossing route from Amari Roger.
- Luke Stampini
quote:
Leatherwood pancakes Bryant, then stands over him and talks trash
- Brian Perroni
quote:
2 good reps from OG Calvin Ashley against DT LaBryan Ray. Ray wins the 3rd rep.
- Luke Stampini
then another guy said this
quote:
LaBryan Ray wins two out of three reps against Calvin Ashley in pass-rush drills. Ray fell down on the one he didn't win. Was too quick to the outside on the other two reps.
- Ryan Callahan
Scout guys said this
quote:
From Chad Simmons:
Labryan Ray and Auburn commit Calvin Ashley had tough battles. Each winning one.
so bottom line is I guess they had a good matchup they split
quote:
Kaindoh blew past Jedrick Wills. Kaindoh spin move gets past Trey Smith. Kaindoh then beat Calvin Ashley
- Luke Stampini

It sounds like Calvin Ashley having another solid day. Markaviest Bryant not so much. Keep reading where he gets dominated by guys like Leatherwood (Bama) and Wilson (UGA)....
Still not much out there on Wooten but the RB/LB seems to be the grouping that gets the least amount of attention

Someone there said Ashley looks better at guard. We don't pass that much though so i'm not really worried about him struggling in pass pro

Anyone know the reason Lasseter decommitted from Michigan?
Posted on 12/29/16 at 12:26 pm to TigerPaw1
Should we start saying Bryant sucks now to make it look like we didn't want him when he goes to Georgia?

I actually think he would be a good redshirt candidate. He needs some more strength. When these guys get their hands on him he can't seem to shake em
