On, Bower, Miles sold him when he pulled out the statistics of his lineman and the NFL. Kudos to Miles, that must be a nice tool to have.
Meh. Could care less losing Bowers. Chizik scouted DE do not have a great track record anyways.

If he can qualify

Does he have grade issues or was that another receiver that we were getting in late on? If he doesn't, get him because we will need receivers next year anyway.

if he is close then he might be worth a shot. What did we end up with for this class? 23 with 3 counting back giving us 5 spots that we can count back next year?
Posted on 2/9/13 at 6:00 pm to Warfarer
2 count back. We have 4 spots left.
Posted on 2/9/13 at 6:05 pm to ellitor
Ok so 4 spots left this year and we have 14 seniors including Lembke and 84 on scholarship total. I can't see any juniors that will be able to leave early next year unless something drastic happens or just through the act of stupidity. However, we have 24 juniors plus any attrition over 2 years so we will need the spots down the road but probably not next year. This might be worth the shot if he could qualify with some work.
I would still like to see us go ahead and bring in Hutch if they don't take Toby Johnson and miss on Elder like expected.

And what would getting Griffin do for our team ranking, much if anything overall?
Posted on 2/9/13 at 6:17 pm to Warfarer
If he's a 4 star on 247, we in top 10.

He is a top 5 receiver pretty much every site

This is what I posted on Hutch on TOS.
quote:
I can't speak for Malzahn but this would be my reason for the gray shirt. If he signs in January of 2014 he would count back to the 2013 class but that does not affect his football seasons eligibility. He would still have 4 years (2014-2017). If we give Hutch the scholly now we pretty much just burned a year of him as a back up. Yes we can redshirt him but what is the point in that if he only has to wait one semester to be the starting punter and not have to be redshirted. He would then still have that redshirt available for him starting in 2014 as insurance for him and the team if it is ever needed for something like an injury. What I do know is barring some major change Gus plans to stick with grayshirting Hutch. I believe Gus has approached Hutch like this. "You are a great kid, great punter, we love you, and want you at Auburn. Would you be willing to wait 1 semester to enroll in January to come in as the starter and not have to be redshirted? That way if you ever needed a redshirt for an injury or anything you would have it instead of it being wasted as a back up in 2013." Based on Hutch's tweets he gladly said yes. Yet another brilliant move by Gus IMO

I would think with Hutch basically guaranteed to have to start in 14 it would be better for him to be on the sidelines a year during the season to see what the atmosphere is like and to be able to spend that time working with the team and special team coach.
And then what happens if Clark is injured this year? Carlson going to punt this year for him and burn his redshirt in the process? Not being snappy but not having a back up on campus that is expected to start the next year doesn't seem optimal.

quote:No change on Rivals, up 2 spots to 9th on 247, up 3 spots to 11th on Scout, ESPN likely will not make anymore changes although they should sinceGriffin is #33 on their top 150 list and #1 at his position.

Any word on how close he is to qualify? is it a matter of classes or a test score or both?
Posted on 2/9/13 at 6:41 pm to Warfarer
IMO it's worth the risk. As much as we will score a great punter is not that important IMO. No offense to you personally but that atmosphere stuff for a punter is hogwash. For them kicking a ball should be kicking a ball. IMO that would be more valid if we are talking about a kicker instead of a punter cuz all their kicks mean points.

FWIW Hoke just said there is a good chance Auburn signs Griffin.

I was told there is zero chance he qualifies anywhere but maybe something changed

That always amazes me considering how easy high school was and I am not sure that I ever studied for any test until I was at Auburn. I wonder what the percentage of college athletes could actually qualify if the requirements were the same for athletes as regular students.
