Gus has venom directed towards him largely for people like mentioned in the OP.

The same was true about Nutt.

Gus is a perfect fit for Auburn, their fans are Gus type fans, look back to trying to rub our fan's noses in "stealing" Kheil Frazier and how he was going to be the next Cam...
I have a friend on the bus. He gone.

Each had their group of stanch supporters in the state who refused to see that either had ever done wrong and their results being anything less than the best possible to be achieved.
Petrino has picked up his group with the same think process.
It is a putting one man above the program problem, something small vocal factions of our fans like to do...
John Pelphrey had/has a group of people like this if that can properly put it in the context of how fricking retarded our fans can be...

I liked Petrino as a coach but I realize he fricked up.

Well, imagine if you had no understanding of reason and logic, you could easily find others who like you liked Petrino and justify how he was wronged by Long not watching out for him on who he hired, etc.
Now, you *really* believe this, then you would have an understanding about the people being discussed, would order WKU gear and have it shipped from Bowling Green, KY etc.

This could be the reason ...or he perhaps resents the fact that a large portion of our fan base directs their venom toward his friend, Gus, for one reason or another. Subsequently, he directs his anger toward the Arkansas program.
I really don't care why. He intended to be offensive and I'm not going back. Until after this past weekend I've never insulted Gus or his followers but that's over. Absolutely sick of hearing about it from Springdale.

they put him on a moral pedestal and wish harm to the Razorback program because Arkansas didn't hire him
Please pardon my conjecture. I can relate.

Malzahn in Springdale is equivalent to this guy:
His followers really are like a cult.
Folks born and raised in NWA would rather see Gus succeed over anything UofA related. It is that bad. These really aren't exaggerations and if you've spent any time in NWA you see it through and through. Gives me the creeps.
Arkansas fans don't like him because they aren't jaded and have seen he's just a sleazy as any other coach yet casts this Dudley do-right image that is complete and utter bull.
I don't see any more venom towards him than I do any other SEC coach that is within close proximity to us. He just has ties here and keeps rearing his head throughout the state despite working for someone else. It's just him being competitive and us being competitive right back. I don't hate him, I just hate the BS image of him.

Another guy had this image in college football.
2006 was all you needed to know from him and his supporters. Arkansas has a great season, but you were not suppose to be enjoying it because Gus wasn't getting the credit for it he "deserved". Meanwhile, Gus is using the media behind the scenes to try to oust Nutt as HC with him replacing him.
Gus could have spoke up on issues and reports in the media, but he remained silent. Why? Because that is what benefited him.

At least Pat has the balls to do it in public...
Ole Mustain was thrown under the bus while at Arkansas by his coach in private, mute in public...

No worries Porky, I value your input.
I'm simply not supporting this business any longer, regardless of how justified he thinks he may be.

Is this merely due to his coaching success at Shiloh and Springdale? From what I understand, Gus isn't even from NWA. What am I missing? This is strange.

He's "their" guy. He put Springdale on the national stage and didn't do too shabby before that either. I think it is just rich people wanting to attach and associate themselves with someone important... or it really could be just blind idolatry of a person. Either way its really bad up there. And as others have said, the mega church up there has been up his arse for years as well. he can do no wrong.

The situation really does appear to have an interesting psychological dynamic on the social/tribal level. I guess I never seriously viewed it in such a manner but it does sound very tribal and cult like to me. Weird.

He is from Ft. Smith.
He has his faction there too. He also has family that still lives there.

I will make a mental note of the place and neither will I SLC.

When I was going to school in Fayetteville, for a short time I dated a girl from Fort Smith that kinda reminds me of his wife (personality). No, it wasn't her but just as nutty. Must be something in the water.

This fascination/obsession doesn't exist outside of Springdale. Been here my whole life and no one in Bentonville really cares about him except those associated with Shiloh.

NWA native here. Also an FHS grad. Most I know don't really give a damn about him either, probably because he was at Shiloh and Springdale while we were at Fayetteville.
