Well, for me, I have no debt. Not even a car loan.

I guess what some people stress about, paying bills, paying loans, etc, I replace with business stress.

It's about being happy. One large contract I have is for 8 total years. It makes my LLC worth quite a bit. I've thought about selling, putting that money back....reducing my house size and being a greeter at Walmart the rest of my life.

I would be happy. I'm not a flashy person. I'm pretty simple. It doesn't take much to make me happy.

I've got to decide how many employees I want to hire so that I have none working over 29 hours a week coming up. I've got to live with cutting a couple of my best folks hours, because I can't afford all this healthcare jazz that's about to go into place across our country.

I feel bad about that. I've got friends in my line of business that are doing the same.

I'm wanting to move locations of one business right now. There is an ideal location for me, closer to the UofA, but the person at this address prior didn't pay their sales tax for 5 months. In Arkansas, sales tax goes with the address, so I would have to pay someone else's sales tax because I would have that address. It boggles my mind. We aren't talking about $900 in taxes either.

Hawgeye, I completely get it that owning and operating a business of any kind is a tremendous amount of work, and many times, you must bring it home with you. There's not really a clock to punch in & out. Depending on what business, and particularly in the first few years, it can be a 24/7 thing, but in the long run, you aren't dependent on others for your livelihood.

Although you have many responsibilities, i.e. employees, taxes, etc., etc., at least you have the freedom to do what you enjoy and your livelihood isn't dependent on corporate policies, philosophies, or the altering of them. I do believe it takes a certain type of personality to be a successful business owner - a very self motivated, disciplined, & driven type. I don't think everyone is cut out to do it nor would everyone be happy doing it, but, overall, a successful business owner does have more freedom and more options, but it is certainly a huge amount of time and effort.

I think a lot of it has to do with trying to get this one contract for the last 5-6 years. Now I've got it......and I'm like...okay, now what? This isn't as fun as it was....

Just don't see how I would have ever been in my position (unless I was the Pres or CEO) if I worked for a company up until now.

You probably wouldn't be in the same position that you are now, particularly, having been at it since the age of 26. It's great that you knew what you wanted at such a young age, and enjoy doing it. I definitely am a believer in people making a living or having a career doing something that really makes them happy considering they'll be doing it for quite a while, and at the risk of sounding like someone from the 1950s, I think it is especially important for a male to do something he really enjoys.

Even today, most of the earning responsibility for a family falls on the man's shoulders, so it is important for him to be as happy as possible doing it. Of course, there are exceptions, and more women have full time careers (any women libbers who might be lurking, please don't kill me), but typically, the male will always have to work, so his being content doing so is pretty important to the happiness of the family as a whole.

My dad has owned his own fencing company for quite some time. The money is great, but his life isn't any easier than what it would be if he were simply one of the guys on the construction crews.

That is most definitely a stress reducer.

Yep, it seems there is always something to stress about, no matter what.

You can't imagine how many family members & friends I have who feel the same, and are serious. My advice is whatever makes you happy and reduces the bad type of stress.

Most of the happiest people I know feel this way.

That has got to suck tremendously. I have a feeling this healthcare shite is going to be just horrible in many ways people haven't considered. Just a really bad snowball effect.

Things like this are why I got out of accounting, actually, didn't do it for long because I hated dealing with the asinine, ever changing tax laws. This is one of the biggest drawbacks to owning your own business, imo. The 2 most valuable things for a business owner to have is a fantastic, trustworthy CPA and attorney. Are there any loopholes your accountant might find to help with the sales tax law? Issues like that drive me nuts. Just so ridiculous and unfair.

Well, I think, as with many things, the challenge or chase of going after a goal is most of the fun of it. Once it's achieved or caught, there's kind of a letdown. It's pretty normal to feel that way, but it's kind of a never ending "thrill of the hunt" vicious cycle.

No loop holes.

If I were to move, I couldn't add that address for my sales tax. The sales tax only goes with address. So basically, I can't even file my paperwork for new sales tax location because of the previous person/business.

Yes it sucks, bad.

Ludicrous.
How the powers that be find it a good idea to punish someone for the faults of another is beyond me. That really is one of the more illogical and moronic tax laws I have heard about.
Hopefully, you can find another location that is just as well suited, but ideally, they would amend the law.

Nah I'm at home. I got hired the same week as a payroll deadline so my first check was garbage. Gotta with till the 6th before I let loose money-wise. Got all those deposits and first month fees to pay next week.
