Bob Bostad was our HR TE coach but he declined. Some say it was a thanks but no thanks when the call was made and others say it was close to happening but he decided to stay in the NFL.

I was hoping this happened but I didn't figure any way in hell it happened. Bostad is an NFL OL coach, him taking a TE coaching position here just didn't seem likely. Who knows now that we've shot for the moon at least we'll land among the stars I guess.

Coach B did something similar to this with his Wisconsin staff. Ben Strickland was a former Badger. He was coaching the DBs with Ash but his main job was to make sure they landed the recruits within the state of Wisconsin. From what I can see he did a decent job at it. He as making in the low $100,000s.

I'm actually surprised that he hasn't interviewed Bart Miller for the job. The kid isn't sticking around Wisconsin it seems.

I feel like Bart probably got consideration but he only has 11 games experience as an actual coach and has never had to recruit.

Yea, isn't GA how you usually break into the college ranks?

Position coaches come from all over...Former GAs,high school coaches, players starting their coaching careers, etc...

One position coach stepping up from the high school ranks won't hurt anything.

Its not like we are making him our offensive coordinator.

We have not confirmed; but hearing chatter that Ruffin McNeill is speaking with Randy Shannon about the DC job at ECU.

Why? He already turned down the USF DC job and took his name out of the running for the HC job at FIU (IIRC) both of which would be better jobs.

He probably makes more as LB coach at Arkansas than he would as DC at ECU as well.

Better opportunity at a BCS DC/HC job from Arkansas than ECU as well.

I doubt he and Ruffin have a prior relationship, but I could be wrong.

I don't think he'll go. I listened to an interview after his hire, and he talked about the importance of not having an ego, so that shouldn't be his main motivation. Also, I think he's excited to be coaching in the SEC with BB's staff. ECU will be in the reformed BigEast, which is garbage. They probably couldn't offer much of a pay increase, anyway.

Summation: I don't want him to leave.

Does he have history with McNeil?

Even if he wants a head job in the future, I'm not sure the ECU DC job is the best course of action.

He already turned down USF DC job. It wouldn't make sense to not go back to your home state but to take a pay cut and go to a Carolina school.

Ruffin only makes $1.1 million as the head coach at ECU. Shannon is making $315,000 as our LB coach. I'm betting that we could keep him easily if its a money issue.

I may be wrong, but $155k was the highest pay for an asst last year at ECU

That makes you appreciate being at a big school. Hopefully we can keep him.

Here's another story:

quote:

Randy Shannon could land at ECU 11:22 AM ET East Carolina Pirates RECOMMEND0COMMENTS0EMAIL

Randy Shannon has emerged as the favorite to become East Carolina's new defensive coordinator according to Pirate Radio 1250 AM in Greenville.
Shannon was recently named Arkansas' linebackers coach.

East Carolina finished 87th in total defense last season under the supervision of defensive coordinator Brian Mitchell. Mitchell was relieved of his duties Jan. 4.

The interesting aspect regarding ECU's interest in Shannon is the former Miami head coach has generally been a proponent of a 4-3 base defense. The Pirates employed a 3-4 base the past two seasons. Another scheme change could be in the Pirates' future if Shannon is hired by East Carolina head coach Ruffin McNeill.- Brent Sobleski

I'd imagine the plan is to increase spending now that the BigEast gravy train has pulled into the station.

I don't think he'll leave, but if he did, it would probably torpedo our chances with several recruits.

We need to get used to these Randy Shannon rumors, it's going to happen a lot.

Remember he was sighted at the BAC last spring and KNWA reported he was hired as DC, when he never even spoke with Petrino according to Shannon.

I'd be very, very surprised if he went to a school where the coach is close to being fired for a pay cut and drop in visibility.
