Tbh, I went to DFW a lot on weekends. I am a golfer, so I’d spend most Saturday’s on Maxwell. Course next to Country Club.

I checked out the rattlesnake roundup in Seeetwater one spring, but that’s already passed. I watched quite a bit of high school football since Abilene has Cooper and Abilene High. Abilene High has a pretty storied program and in the same class as Permian.

During the summer they have a decent farmers market. It’s across the street from where the Texas museum thing is downtown.

Really though, there isn’t much unless there is an “event” going on. My house was northeast Abilene off of 351 on Old Ironsides Road. Lots of college aged kids in that area. Sort of a newer area of town.

Big Spring has some old hotel and Delek refinery. If you’re in to driving and checking out the area, make a drive through one day down to San Angelo. They have a nice downtown river area.

You might as well head to Midland after Big Spring and get a Torta from Martinez Bakery.

Are you a hunter?

Dove season is big in that area and down around San Angelo are some of the biggest whitetail I’ve seen. Also, lots of “wild game” ranches/outfitters south of Abilene. I’m talking Zebra’s, and crazy shite.

Not my cup of tea, but one day I just took off driving and had been on the road about an hour and I was like...wtf is a heard of zebras doing here?

I'm not a hunter and wouldn't go through the trouble of getting a license being that I'm only here for three weeks, HOWEVER, where the hell are these zebras.

Head south towards Menard. Then kick over towards San Angelo. On your drive start looking for really tall fences. Those are big game ranches. Some are “exotic” game ranches with weird animals people pay to hunt.

I’m an Arkansas boy, so I just don’t care about hunting anything other than whitetail, duck, and turkey. It’s just odd to be driving in landscape like the Abilene area and being like...*hits breaks* “Was that zebras?” *reverse and u turn* “holy shite that’s zebras out in the middle of nowhere Texas”

I did some research when down there and there are some crazy animals on those ranches. There is one in Merkel that has Wildebeests.

Mason Texas is where the zebra were. Just googled and the ranch is called Star S Ranch. They also have other African animals.

Also curious cubs...do they still have the American Airlines graveyard off the loop? I’m sure they do...Always thought that was odd. Over in the area of the football stadium and fairgrounds.

I'm not sure. I've only been here for a week but I'll look for it in the next few days. Heading to San Angelo tomorrow so I'll certainly look for the game ranches.

Cubs...If you grew up in Arkansas OR grew up in a place with trees, not much wind, and lots of greenery...most of the western side of Texas will look like a dump to you. It did to me.

Midland/Odessa is even worse. The oil/gas industry traffic makes that area hell on earth. Unfortunately for me, my family is in the oil and gas industry.

I was stationed in Clovis NM for three years, I've learned to appreciate the west but obviously some areas are much better than others. I always liked Lubbock.

NM is the pits. We’ve had a lot going on in the Carlsbad area the last couple of years and I was out there for some meetings a month ago. Yikes.

Lubbock isn’t too bad. I fly in to Lubbock when Midland is out of rental cars(which is often).

So I know who to contact when I retire in a couple of years and I'm looking for a job.
