Sounds like Ellis might be the B1G linebacker we're going to need for our B1G team.

Ash talking about D
Good read, thanks.
I feel a lot more confident with Ash running the D instead of Haynes. Last year Haynes blamed everything on execution, and never even entertained the idea that his play calling should change. That really pissed me off because he laid all of the blame on our players and didn't take any himself.

Haynes is one of the most disappointing hires I can remember

Eh, he did good in the Cotton Bowl
But everything went to shite when John L was hired. Hard to judge just based on that

It's very easy to judge. We sat here and yelled out what to audible to or adjustments to make and none of us know shite about football.
But Haynes just kept letting his guys get roasted and teams put points on the board.
I don't think his Kent St. tenure is going to be very successful.

Not only that, the biggest thing missing from last year's team was leadership. Those guys had just lost their head coach and needed someone to take charge. And where is Haynes? Up in the damn booth.

stat i just posted on woopig:
Arkansas was #2 in the SEC in sacks allowed for the season, #3 for in-conference games. and we now have the #1 ranked team's OL coach.
the OL also has a strong core returning, bigger and stronger, to work with said coach.
i saw Chris Low had ours ranked like #12 in the league for this coming season. people are sleeping on our OL.

I think OL will be this teams strength.
This is why I point to a 6 win season, 7 win possible.
You have talent on the inside with Cook & Swanson. You have talent with Smothers. Ollison lacks talent, but I picked him as my break out player of the year in another thread. You throw in someone else to fill in at the tackle spot and this is a solid team.
I think what a lot of people miss with Smothers and Cook are the change in blocking philosophy they had from high school to college. Those two are downhill blockers. They were having to transition to a more finesse type scheme. This offense suits their natural abilities IMO.
Again, I think this line is going to maul some folks and give Williams and Collins some room to run.
I think this is why Coach B actually likes this team. There is talent in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
It bugs me to hear people say we have no talent on the Oline just based on last season, or the season before. These guys were HIGHLY recruited in high school. They didnt just forget how to block. They reached Arkansas, were coached by a shitty Oline coach and were asked to play patty cake for 5 seconds instead of getting their hands on the titty part of the defenders shoulder pads and driving his arse 10 yards down field.
Its a big difference and a big change for those guys.

OL/DL are going to be pretty damn salty. i'm optimist and have been predicting 8+ wins.
i will be really curious to see what our offensive identity will be. despite talking balance, the play calling has been split about 65/35 run/pass every year bielema has been a HC. need to see how he reconciles this with chaney's pass-heavy history.
there were rumors after last season that bielema tied his OC's hands until the B1G CG, and that's why their offense was so much better that game than before or after. granted, this is post facto, unnamed sources stuff written in a madison newspaper after Bielema took the arkansas job.

But the SECr told me we will suck the next few years and 2B's will be run out of town because we will be tired of his B1G slow style of play.

He only talks about balance in terms of yardage.
Petrino talked about balance all the time too, but was never close to achieving it, mainly 70% towards the pass (yardage gained).

If put a football in a cannon blasted it 2500 yds, it would get there faster than if somebody ran it. Doesn't surprise me that Bielema would prefer the slower method.

Someone's gotta run that 2500 yards to catch that ball...

ETA: Plus I look at it this way. If you start running with a football, somebody is going to try and tackle you. It's just a law of nature. Go grab a football at Dick's sporting goods then run for the parking lot, somebody is going to tackle you. You might say that's because you didn't pay for the football, but I will chalk it up to nature.
On the other hand you grab the football and have your friend run to the parking lot, and then you throw the ball.

i don't like that. You can't control the yardage you get each play but you can control how much you mix up your play calling between run and pass.
