his one is interesting. I would have guessed Skipper and Kirkland would be the other way around right out of the gate.

“@DannyWest1: Coach @CoachSamPittman says Denver Kirkland is at RT, Reeve Koehler is at C & Dan Skipper's at LT.

LT are usually the more athletic tall guys. They have long arms which makes them better pass protectors and are usually put on the QBS blind side.

Right but I didn't think Skipper would be good enough to start out there. I mistakenly thought wih his build that he would be clumsy with the college game and need to be brought along slowly. Obviously I was wrong. That or they're just throwing him in the deep end to see if he'll swim.

I think they put Kirkland a RT because he is the most ready to play right now and that is the one spot on our line that is still a question mark. Not saying he will beat out Ollison but if there was a change from the 5 listed after the spring game that is the spot it would be.

I will add that if Skipper or Kirkland want to have a spot at OT they need to make an impression early. Jermaine will be here next spring and is expected step right in to one of the OT spots. If Ollison holds on to the other that means both tackles would be JRs.

It is going to be fun to watch the OL battles for years to come. When someone graduates we will have 2-3 more waiting behind them hoping to prove they should be the next starter.

Well hopefully he is more like a Jonathon Ogden, a really big guy with great feet, and not like a Matt Hall.

I had (and still do, to some extent) some concerns about Skipper's height as well.

However, it was explained to me that he bends well so it's okay...

So how awesome is AJ Derby's life right now?

I don't have any pics of him slaying OT9's or flashing Bama recruit wads of cash, but this time last year he'd transfered to a JUCO from Iowa where they had moved him to LB IIRC.

He was going into one year deal at Coffeyville to try to get some attention from D1 schools as a QB, and full of uncertainty.

To now, he's the backup at a good school in the SEC, playing for his father's teammate where there's a good relationship, and has a chance to play a good bit in the next 3 games and become the starter if BA gets injured.

Here's an article about him that recently came out. LINK

From 247:

quote:

We had Defensive players today as well as Coach Ash and Coach Shannon

***At LB, they are still looking for three to step forward there. I asked if AJ Turner is healthy, Coach Ash said he's practicing. He said same thing on Otha Peters though he did say Otha was much better Health wise than last spring. He said Myke Tavarres isn't in two-deep, but is trying. He said Martrell Spaight was still trying to learn to tie his shoe. He was joking but his point was Martrell is new to the D.

***Rohan Gaines told me the secondary is really doing well. He said the biggest difference in Ash and Haynes, and Will Hines told me same thing, is that with Ash you have to have every single step down. Ash is big, big and big on fundamentals. Both said you don't like take a shortcut on any one play.

***Trey Flowers told me the defensive line will be the strength of the defense. He said they are ready to produce this year. Chris Smith and Flowers both told me they love this defense.

You mean we might finally end up with a fundamentally sound defense?

Per Coach Thomas (paraphrased)

Alex running too high, needs to get pad level down. Figures once he gets lit up from running too high a couple of times in practice, he will learn to get down.

Did we just see a challenge issued to the Defense? Who can knock the 5* off the freshman?

Trey flowers on his speech to the team-

“I was just spreading the message about the winning attitude we’ve got to approach,” Flowers said. “It’s just about not letting anybody take food off our plate. Not letting heat take the food. Not letting being fatigued, being sore. It’s just a dog mentality. Stray dog out there that has to eat. That was pretty much the message. Embracing a winning attitude, having the will to win and refuse to lose.”
