Deep dive into the Hogs' schedule

Wanted to kick up a thread to go in depth with our schedule. As we well know, one of the most crucial components of a schedule is not necessarily who you play but when you catch them (*cough* A&M), as well as the opponents' games in the previous and following weeks. So, I figured we should take a deeper dive into our schedule as we grind out the final days to kickoff.
Florida A&M
- Previous week - Texas Southern
- Following week - Bye
- Overview - not much to say here, for obvious reasons. The only notable thing is that this is their second game and a short week for them.
TCU
- Previous week - Jackson State
- Following week - SMU
- Overview - not much to glean, as JSU shouldn't be much of a test. This will be TCU's first trip to Fayetteville since 1988, which the Hogs won 53-10.
Texas A&M
- Previous week - Louisiana-Lafayette
- Following week - South Carolina
- Overview - Hogs have a bye into this one, and the Cajuns aren't exactly a gimme cupcake. We'll be able to tell more about these teams from the TCU and UCLA games.
New Mexico State
- Previous week - UTEP
- Following week - @Appalachian State
- Overview - NMSU has this one sandwiched between two conference games, and their game with us will kick off a stretch of three consecutive road games.
@South Carolina
- Previous week - @Texas A&M
- Following week - @Tennessee
- Overview - another opponent with our game sandwiched between two conference games, and in this car they're both on the road against decent - though rebuilding - SEC teams. They also have a decently tough stretch through the first five weeks (NC State, @Mizzou, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, @A&M). Could be a potential for what Bruce Feldman calls the "body blow theory" wherein a team's schedule, specifically the week prior, plays into a week or a game more than the opponent.
@Alabama
- Previous week - @Texas A&M
- Following week - Tennessee
- Overview - coincidentally the second straight opponent play a three week stretch of A&M, Arkansas and Tennessee. Not much to glean here since Bama is Bama, and they've only lost 4 games at home since 2008.
Auburn
- Previous week - @LSU
- Following week - Bye
- Overview - our game will be the second of three straight road games for Auburn, though they do have a bye week heading into A&M. Body blow potential here.
@Ole Miss
- Previous week - LSU
- Following week - @Kentucky
- Overview - another potential body blow game. Side note, this is the final game of a three game home stand (starting with Vandy) for Ole Miss.
Coastal Carolina
- Previous week - Texas State
- Following week - Troy
- Overview - not much to glean here, though this will be sandwiched around two important conference games for them.
@LSU
- Previous week - @Alabama
- Following week - @Tennessee
- Overview - sandwiched between two tough road games and coming off a potentially tough game in Tuscaloosa, this has to potential to be both a body blow game and what the Solid Verbal podcast calls a letdown/lookahead sandwich. This is also in the middle of a brutal stretch run for LSU of @Florida, Auburn, @Ole Miss, @Alabama, Arkansas, @Tennessee, Texas A&M.
Mississippi State
- Previous week - Alabama
- Following week - Ole Miss
- Overview - another game in which Alabama is the prior opponent, this one has a lot of body blow potential. Also working in the Hogs favor is the potential for Mississippi State to be looking ahead to the Egg Bowl.
Missouri
- Previous week - @Vanderbilt
- Following week - none
- Overview - the only real takeaway with this one is that Mizzou has a secretly manageable schedule this season.

What I get out of this is that we could win 10 games or so as long as we quit doing dumb shite...or quitting

Super favorable schedule. Except the early bye sucks, but we might finally fricking beat the aggies.

No doubt...We can navigate the first part of our season.
It's time to bring it...I really believe this starts a new CBB era...Senior's in key areas, more talent across the board and a good looking pipeline.

All signs point to a very hungry, and excellent leader driven team. Something we didn't have last year. I 100% believe that the senior in house fighting, and lack of true leaders hurt that team. 2015 had the chance, but that team read their press clippings, instead of coming in with a chip on their shoulders like this team.
We have finally over the last 2 classes recruited SEC speed and size. I think when CBB first got here he really didn't realize all the teams up north are actually slow as frick, and recruited guys like he was used to.
Our offense will be at a level across the board athletically we haven't seen here since 2010/11.

Exactly. When referencing a team's schedule, most people usually simply cite the slate of opponents, though there's much more to it than that.
Key takeaway of the above is that of our 8 SEC opponents, none have a bye the week before playing us, and 5 have away games the week prior. Additionally, 2 teams play Texas A&M, 2 play LSU, and 2 play Alabama, so we're not exactly falling the week after a cupcake. Texas A&M is our only SEC opponent who plays a non-P5 school the week before our game.

I obviously agree...It seems like we have a different kindof kid here, both on and off the field.
Call me a homer...it takes the little things and Bret is doing it right. #ijustwentthere

We have four major issues that worry me going into the season. Pass protection, switching to the 3-4, FGs, and most importantly, poor conditioning.
If the team can do well in all 4 areas then I think we have the sort of manageable schedule to make a run.

This question will get answered soon. FAMU has a legit QB and and legit 6'6" WR.
The back 8 will be tested early and often on Thursday

Definitely agree, though I'd go further than pass pro and denote OL in general (pass pro, run blocking, assignment and mistake-free football) as a general area for improvement.

Fall camp reports all indicate we are actually much better at pass pro, but we are behind run blocking. It may take a few games to gel.
Posted on 8/27/17 at 10:48 pm to russellvillehog
So the 13 games last season didn't help them gel?

I meant run game wise. Remember we have 3 new backs, and it requires timing just like the passing game.
From what I've gathered the o line worked everyday during the off season on their pass pro. Recorded it, then went and watched to fix problems.
I think it is similar to like in 2015 when our offense practiced the passing game so much we didn't have the push right away.
