why so many of you didn’t want Brent Venables as our head coach? Sure, he may turn out to be the worst head coach in college football history, or may never be a HC at all, but it was dumb not to make that dude say no.

Yeah, still here. Bring on the down votes.

Because he wasn't interested. He was/is planning on staying at Clemson until his kids graduate, etc.

Dude... carry on! But I did bring a down vote for ya, since you asked!

Never heard he wasn’t interested. Do you know if we ever pulled him in and talked to him seriously?

We settled for the second best coordinator in their program’s history. We’ll be fine.

Hail no, we didn't pull him in and talk to him seriously.

We contacted his agent through a psychic medium using tin foil and meth pockets!

Dude....

He was contacted through his agent, and he wasn't interested "At this time".

Sounds like we waited too long on him. Probably our only shot at him was when he split with Oklahomo after 2011.

The same way he turned around Clemson's defense is the same Chad turned around Clemson's offense.

Chad also has some HC experience and had SMU trending upward. That is why

Yeah, the hogvillians are still expecting Venables to be named DC any day now.

Venables was one of three names I saw floated out there by some folks who have other folks ear on stuff like this.

Venables, Chad Morris, Charlie Strong.

Glad we didn't end up with Strong, wish we would have got Venables, happy we ended up with Morris.

For all the grief people gave others for saying they thought it would be Venables, it was the same folks pushing for Venables that brought us Morris.

Either way, the program is in good hands, I reckon. Clemson's defense was incredible last night. Shut those frickers down minus one of their best players. Venables is the best coach in the business IMO.

I think we'll do fine with Morris, if he finds the right DC. I just find it funny that so many on this board were absolutely shitty about Venables, and even a defensive minded coach, when it's stupid obvious that this is the path to real success in college football.

We have already been over this. Recruiting is an even better indicator of success. Chad Morris was a better hire in that regard.

I guess I missed the part where Venables has been a successful head football coach and proved all the doubters wrong.

He hasn't shown a ton of interest in being a HC, at least right now.

He might be Bud Foster and be a DC at his school for 20 years, or he might be Kirby Smart waiting out the right job. My money is on the former, but who knows.

I'm going to assume that wasn't the threshold for Morris, why would it have been for anyone else?

This thread isn’t about Morris though. You’re talking about Venables as if we missed on an elite head coach. There’s no way to know that at this point so the people who were shitty on him could still be right.

I'd agree that Morris looks like he is going to be the best recruiter we've ever had. Maybe the best we'll ever have. Still don't think that puts us in the top 10 recruiting without doing the Ole Miss trick. Which brings me back to the fact that our only chance at any real success is having a top 10 defense.

I would have said the same awhile back but he is pulling a top 20 class in our worst year ever. I could make the same argument about a top 10 defense.

According to Rev, we reached out to him, and his agent brushed us off. So if we wanted him, it probably would have had to have been after the 2011 season, which would really have been a reach.

The people who were shitty about him, were shitty to the people who wanted to go after an obviously elite, defensive minded coach. For no good reason.

Both sides were being shitty. Everyone acts like they can predict the future.
